Are you saying you are going from a carpal tunnel procedure to slinging 60lb bags of seed corn in 24 hours??? If so that's pretty damn impressive.
With the left hand it was around 4 days before it felt good enough that I could lift stuff without being super careful but there are no lifting restrictions with the Arthroscopic style so the pain is the throttle.

I plan to run the forklift and yell and point a whole bunch lol. Three other guys are gonna come over Friday and Saturday and we have Seed Pickup Days scheduled for April 3rd and 4th so it’s high time to get to work ! By Monday I think I’d be able to toss stuff around without issue on my own. Today is 11 days after the last surgery and it feels like nothing happened.

Just a little incision remains.

I built me a little rig to hold my hand vertical on the way home like I was told to. A Rubbermaid tub and a couple V-Belts made a perfect match.
IMG_5978.jpeg

Exactly 24hrs after surgery I was on the forklift trying not to run the levers with my hand turnt sideways. I had a few moments where I sounded like a seal in pain but all was well. 6hrs or so later and we were all laughing about how the guys thought I was making horn noises to annoy them lol.
IMG_5982.png

After what proved to be a productive and painful afternoon the little guy and I assembled boxes to house a gift to our customers that’d go out with every order. What fun.
IMG_5983.jpeg

When we had them complete I hopped on the lawnmower, hooked up the drag and tried to make the yard flat again.
IMG_5986.jpeg

We decided to do some griddling and I made some potatoes, pork chops, onions and the smashedest smash burgers I could muster up lol
IMG_5990.jpeg

After supper Miss Lily decided to try and braid some mane hair on Charles.

I’m just getting a few minutes (or in your case maybe more than a few catching up with your doings).

Best of luck with the surgery and if you’d like a good way to strengthen it besides all the work you do try a gyro.

I’m loving all the stuff going on in your life and you managed to get a little Mexican vacation in there too.

Interesting how you said putting your funds into a money market instead of calves. the farmer’s math doesn’t seem to end but you seem to have figured it out so keep up the good work.

That drone looks like it’s another good investment that came with a lot of red tape but I like your thinking.

Spring is coming fast so here’s to a great season and sending lots of positive vibes to you and your family and minn ee soda!!

Well okay …..

Most days I also love all the stuff going on in my life lol. I have a feeling the drone tangent has the potential to shift things around quite a bit if we let it. Maybe next year we’ll have 10 drones in the air with a few employees. Who knows !?

My brain sometimes does silly things with money. I’m $71,395 into this drone adventure and wrote those checks out eagerly. I was in town today and didn’t go out to eat because I can’t stand paying $16 for a burger and fries so I skipped lunch and ate a granola bar when I got home at 3pm.

I passed my FAA physical today and got my Class 3 Medical certificate. One more thing crossed off the list !! Lots of red tape and a little duct tape lol.

If the snow stays away I think we’ll be doing fieldwork in two weeks. I’m beyond excited !! Things are gonna get busy in a hurry. Lots of seed to deliver, **** to haul, tillage to do, possible bale some corn stalks for bedding, shut the wood stove off one of these days and the list goes on and on but I love it.

Welp I purchased a Roadrunner 350 drone tender. Pretty excited to put it to work this summer with the drone. It’s got a nifty generator shelf, electric pumps, hose reels for fresh water and hot mix and a complete drain SS tank. Didn’t spring for the pickup though lol. I’m gonna put it on Walter. He’s gonna love pulling drone tender duty this summer.
IMG_6002.jpeg

With a little Googling I found the perfect flight deck setup. Here it is in “storage” mode.
IMG_5998.jpeg

Here it is on the back of a semi tractor.
IMG_5996.jpeg

Bottom view all folded out and field ready.
IMG_5995.jpeg

Top view in use. Having wings on a flight deck like this would feel a whole lot more secure and safe than just an 8’ wide trailer. Maybe I gotta build something like this over next winter.
IMG_5997.png

Also played around with a few more drone logos.
IMG_6005.png

The Sasquatch makes me giggle. I like it and I think he’s gonna be my mascot.

Another cool side FARMING biz and yes of course this old guy loves the Sasquatch logo.

Thats just like me when you won’t spend $16 for something you can get almost free but if you come to our neighborhood the price is $25 for a burger and fries at a sit down restaurant.

Best of luck with the planting and of course the entire season and side biz work.

Jetson has a one man flying car that was $92,000 but might be more to get here from Italy. Lots of YouTube vids of owner and his pilot flying this car around his country estate in Tuscany if you’re curious.

If anyone can figure out this techie stuff it’s you and nice to see you have some great young help too.

My first thought was “George built a real car !?” I’ve seen videos of it and it’s pretty dang sweet.

I’ve been learning a lot lately lol. The drone stuff isn’t nearly as techie as it seems. I am embarking down a complete overhaul of my entire data cabinet and trying to automate things a bit more for my media setup. I’m realizing things have changed a ton in the last 5yrs since I last setup all the softwares on my current setup. I’m up for a challenge but I may just go back to doing things manually once in a while. We’ll see lol.

I dug the charger out of its box today. This thing is a tank. It pulls 56a at 240v when charging full tilt. It’s got a pair of cooling fans to help keep things from overheating while it’s charging that monster battery in less than 10 minutes.
IMG_6024.jpeg

What a cavern !! The charger connects to the controller via Bluetooth and lets the controller know charge percentage as well as being able to change the charge speed if needed.
IMG_6027.jpeg

The batteries are 30+lbs each. Beefy. These things would run a Nokia bag phone for a few days !!

Odd that on the battery cartridge "+" is red in color while "-" is green in color. Then on the battery charger, red ("R"?) is labeled "-" while "L" is labeled "+". Hope that thing can't insert backwards!

I’ll put the battery in the charger later and post a picture. It’ll make more sense. And no, it won’t go in backwards.

The words need to be facing you on the battery and on the charger when putting the battery in the charger and in the drone and it’ll all match up.

Plus in aerial navigation red is on the left and green is on the right. Look I learned myself something in my Part 107 classes lol.

Pops and I got around 7,000bu of corn hauled to my steer barn bin early in the week. Out of his bin with an 8” unload and 10” loadout auger make short work of filling the wagons.
IMG_6019.jpeg

I was going to put my lawnmower on the auger at my place but didn’t want to upset the red and orange guys with how awesome and powerful green stuff is lol
IMG_6022.jpeg

Look at that beautiful young lady !! Mama Bear and the little people squad helped put shirts, towels and glass cleaner into boxes for our corn customers. Mama Bear is repping the wares lol.
IMG_6033.jpeg

All 87 gifts boxed up ready to be given out to customers !!
IMG_6034.jpeg

I started in on building a 60’ tip down antenna for a local business a bit ago.
IMG_6009.jpeg

Pivot mechanism is assembled.
IMG_6010.jpeg

I didn’t take a ton of pictures but here it is with the base ready to have its plates welded on.
IMG_6040.jpeg

Pivot plates attached and welded to the top of the poles. Gotta get it all welded together and it’ll be ready for delivery !!

Two new steaks in training arrived a few days ago. Scott is in the left and Dave is on the right. Where these kids get their name ideas is beyond me 😂
IMG_6049.jpeg

We got the drone charger wired up and ready to be put to work. I’m excited to see what it pulls for power. The data plate says it’ll pull 56a at 240v so we’ll see.
IMG_6059.jpeg

I built an oil change tub for the bigger stuff finally.
IMG_6074.jpeg

The old oil change pan is now the catch pan/anti splash pan. It worked very well changing oil on Walter today.
IMG_6075.jpeg

Every spring when I wake it up and bring it in the shop I realize how much I like this truck !!

We just had a couple inches of snow yesterday morning too. It's BS. We should at least be out getting some early nitrogen on the wheat by now.
How do you apply your N ?

How do you plan on emptying the oil tub?
Gonna tip it over on the driveway and use it as dust control. JK lol. It’s got a valve on the bottom so I plan to make a short extension with a hose on it so I can lift it moved another IBC tote and empty it into it. I’ve been mixing the oil with wood chips and feeding it to the wood stove in small quantities. Too much oil on the chips and it makes a mess and smokes. Too little and it’s a waste of time. I’ve found a nice ratio this winter that I hope to remember for next winter lol.

It's been freezing at night but no snow around here. Yall can keep the white stuff.
We were supposed to get close to 12” from the last storm but the temps stayed up and we got more rain than snow thankfully. If we get a couple warm sunny days we’ll be hauling **** and doing fieldwork things. It’s time boys !!

Most wheat around here gets liquid N streamed on, although with the price difference this year there's going to be more dry fert used.

Thankfully we’ve got most of our fert locked in already but it was still spendy. We’ve done Y-Drops for the corn the last few years and have really liked what it’s done. I plan to spot spread some dry with the drone this summer to see if I can get it on later as well. A 180lb spreader is gonna take a few trips but it’s gonna be fun learning what it’ll all take.

Traveling yesterday in Holmes county, largest Amish group in the US-I believe. The smell passing some of the farms in my travels, yeah lets just say the holding tanks have a lot of room again. Ah the fresh country air. WHEW

You live in the country long enough and you'll get to like that smell, and turn your nose up at the urban smells.

Time to dig some pipes out to build a few more irrigator bridges !!
IMG_6136.jpeg

The gas axe makes short work of sizing metal things.
IMG_6151.jpeg

Pile of 15’ pipes ready for the next step.
IMG_6152.jpeg

The lawnmower carried 5 pipes at a time but it wasn’t all that happy about it :lol_hitti
IMG_6159.jpeg

Five pipes wide with an offset foot on each side.
IMG_6160.jpeg

The offset foot will face the center of the irrigator. The wheels lean away from the center to keep it sort of pulling itself straight and I don’t want that pulling force to roll the bridges over so the feet are offset.
IMG_6177.jpeg

Shoving them in place !!
IMG_6183.jpeg

Success :drink:

Time to go pick some rocks !! I gots the Robo picker on the skiddy and the skeleton bucket along in case I find a big’un.
IMG_6198.jpeg

The little dude drove the tractor and wagon around and did quite well for being his first real tractor outing at 8yrs old.
IMG_6204.jpeg

Pops found a couple decent sized rocks !!
IMG_6200.jpeg

And then it snowed again. WTF Mother Nature !? It’s time to be warm !!
IMG_6209.jpeg

My first four rows of sweet corn for the year are going in. This is one of those fancy planters with no row markers so you gotta rely on your internal GPS to guide you :lol_hitti
IMG_6222.jpeg

Here’s something I’ve never done before. Rake corn stalks in the spring !!
IMG_6221.jpeg

Baling stalks in the spring is also a new one for me.
IMG_6238.jpeg

I’ve got a neighbor that will be short on bales so I told him we could make him a few. Ended up with 112 of the nicest bales I’ve ever made !!

That sounds like a nice yield on corn stalk bales.
It's good to see springtime farm stuff starting after a long winter.

Three generations working together to pick rocks is pretty cool. Your son probably learned to drive subconsciously during all the ride-alongs with you over the years!

112 bales on 52 acres isn’t bad. Last fall I’d have gotten around 150-160 as I usually get 3 bales an acre. We talked about baling them last fall but I didn’t need them as I already have around 150 more than I’ll use this year so we thought let them sit and maybe we can try them in the spring.

We have almost all the manure hauled and have a bunch of ground worked up and ready to plant. Looks like a cool rainy week ahead so we’ll do some inside the shop things and hit it hard when things dry up !!

He has accumulated some serious seat time over the years. He’s 8.5yrs old and has 8.5yrs on the job lol.

Awesome work and great to see Leo is driving.
100% agreed. He did very well for his first actual unassisted tractor task. After a few hours he was just about exactly where we wanted him when we needed him there. Hopefully the kiddos continue to be interested in the farm and want to farm one day. Nothing would make me happier than to give them everything we’ve worked for so they can continue on as 6th generation on some of the same ground.

Has your drone been flying around the farm or are you still reading all the manuals??
It’s been sitting high and dry in the shop since it arrived. I am going to maybe to some test flights this week and spray out some water to get the hang of things.

Haul that stinky gold !! With urea prices around $900/ton there is around $600 worth of nitrogen alone in each load. Plus all the other macro and micro nutrients that are in manure that are harder to measure but still quite valuable.
IMG_6225.jpeg

The guys I sold the bales to started to grab them out of the field right away but I caught up to them. I think I’m gonna send them a bill for ************ as I flung some on the bales they took home :lol_hitti
IMG_6242.jpeg

Pops was right behind me working the pooooooooo in to keep the stink down and to keep the nitrogen from gassing off. Most of the stink with manure is the ammonia gassing off and ammonia is nitrogen in gas form so that’s literal dollars vaporizing into the air !!
IMG_6243.jpeg

And now I’m doing tillage. We played musical tractors for a few days 😂
IMG_6249.jpeg

I asked if I could do tillage so I could finish watching my Part 107 study videos while playing the autosteer game.
IMG_6251.jpeg

Having auto steer is nice for a few reasons. One of them being I can keep a better eye on the implement behind me. I noticed one set of discs wasn’t spinning and got out to investigate. ******* rocks.
IMG_6253.jpeg

I keep a sledge and an old manure bucket tooth in the cab to free them when they get stuck. This was the third this season and I doubt it’ll be the last.

Whilst Pops and I were doing farmer things a neighbor send this with the caption “Big John had an awful nice exhaust note”. Agreed 100%. All 12.5l thumping under the hood make some nice music. Each cylinder is larger than a 2l pop bottle …..
IMG_6257.jpeg

Playing the autosteer game and laying some nice lines in the fields.
IMG_6255.jpeg

Pulled back on a hydraulic lever and there was a full on pressure washer of oil behind me. WTF !? Some dummy didn’t tie the hoses up when hooking the disk up and one of them got pinchered between the hitch and the hitch. Dumb.
IMG_6258.jpeg

Time to play a game of “what tools do I need that I don’t have but since I don’t have them I gotta make something else work”
IMG_6259.jpeg

A vise grip, 1/2”, 9/16” and 3/4” wrenches are about all you need to fix most things. 3/4” was close enough to the 11/16” that I needed and it did the trick lol. Perfect. This hose is extra shot with not only one extra hole but two extra holes. That’s less than ideal.
IMG_6260.jpeg

Hey I have a hose making machine !!! Tosses a new hose together and routed them through the pin. It actually worked very well to do this and I what I’m gonna do from now on.
