That picture reminds me of one wet year where we had to pull the baler with the crawler. The hay was ready but the ground to soft/wet to use a wheel tractor. Good luck on that.
It's always a **** shoot when we cut the meadow if we're gonna get it baled or not. It takes 4-7 days to dry and if it rains it'll take longer to dry or the ground may be too wet to drive in and bale it. I'd much rather have it rain and not be able to get in the meadows because the rain will help the rest of the crops much more !!

I would not worry about the pipe getting knocked....the odour is a great way to clear your sinus and wake you up faster than 5 cups of coffee.
Well that makes another reason I didn't want to hit the pipe and crack it !!

I finished digging around the well this morning without issue. They should be able to hook it all up tomorrow morning.
35788390826_b643f8476f_b.jpg

Water pipes are up and in the final position. There is a 1.25" black line that will be the supply from the well, a 1" gray conduit for power to the well and a 1" black line that will supply water to the steer barn addition next year.
35788391436_264dd7f874_b.jpg

The floor drain in the control room is in. There will be very little water going through it so we decided to run a solid drain tile across the driveway and a perforated tile once we hit the field area. It's in the same trench so if we ever have to dig up the water line it'll be a nice marker as to where the water line is before we get down too far.
35828672095_2fa3cff24a_b.jpg

All done and ready for concrete tomorrow

JB: The POULTRY HAWK looks like a sweet machine and not sure what others use for these huge CHICKEN COOPS (MANSIONS), but that looks like it should help a lot.

nice work on the repair and did you name your Bobcat MARTHA or did i mis read that? nice work on the ditch. i've got the older brother to your stomper and i certainly know what you mean when you say you are still a bit jumpy.

so maybe by the end of the week you'll have another structure on your farm 3 times as big as my city lot. WOW!!

good luck

Others in our area use a pair of 5 gallon pails. Sounds like absolute torture to me !!! See below for the excavators name :lol_hitti

the excavator's name is Doug - dur:bounce:
Yup. It's Doug because it digs and dugs is past tense of digs so it's Doug !!

Today is the Mrs. and I's 7th wedding anniversary so we went to the place we've been going for the last 6 years for our anniversary. Antons in Waite Park, MN. I ordered the BIG EGO burger. It is a 3/4lb patty with onions and BBQ smushed between a pair of grilled sammmmmmichs !!!
35009452404_a53d6ebd86_b.jpg

Well well well it looks as if our waitress may have a side job with a name like Bunny !!
35680520042_f754cdbc22_b.jpg

When I got home I saw that the wall steel and trim has arrived.
35009452164_3ec551ce4b_b.jpg

Along with 34,000lbs of galvanized roof steel. Good grief. 10 stacks of 42 sheets.

They're talking about lots of stormy weather tonight with high winds....I hope the wall stays in place, even without any sheathing on it, I bet there's enough surface area to catch a lot of wind.

CF: i was thinking the exact same thing when i saw JB's post a few hours ago on my cell phone. with only a little lift OMG that 650 foot wall even if it's only 2x4's 16 inch on center has to be heavy and awkward. looks like the crew figured it out for the other side.

JB: happy anniversary and quite a meal there too.

speaking of workers and CREW how many guys are showing up to cut/nail and put together the COOP?

good luck with the weather

Happy anniversary!
I wanna see how many guys it takes to stand up that loooong wall!:wtf:
They stood the wall up in roughly 40' sections. It sure looked like it was all nailed together while it was laying there though !!

The really bad stuff stayed just North of us. We just about got missed and only got a tenth of an inch. We could really use some rain, it's getting pretty dry around here !!

Monday and Tuesday there were 9 guys. Today they are planning on setting all 152 rafters and plan to put roof steel on as well. They are an ambitious bunch.

Last night we baled 101 3'x3'x8' square bales of meadow hay and got them hauled home. The little bridge dad built held up perfectly !!!
35030094884_ca47018135_b.jpg

Dad is headed home with load number two. The two trailers can haul 36 bales at a time.
35700407332_a695843641_b.jpg

When the haying was done I had to go check out their progress. They were all gone before noon once they got the wall up and everything prepped for rafters.
35030095294_6f43cb8877_b.jpg

Looking in the South cleanout door towards the north. They have braces every 8' nailed onto the studs ready for rafters.

Keep the pics coming!

Question - What kind of work is involved for you with this chicken operation?

I know you got a job off the farm. It looks like a serious chicken operation to run it part-time

Lunker you must be reading my mind ecause that was my exact same question!!
The amount of work varies depending where the flock is in the growth cycle. I've been told anywhere from an hour to four hours a day to do chores with one guy. Dad and I plan to do chores together so that time should be cut in 3/4 or so.

We ******** a lot so we don't work twice as fast :lol_hitti

My responsibilities at work are being shuffled around at work so I can focus primarily on the technology type stuff. Hanging/supporting camera systems, setting up and supporting PC's for our robot dairies, communication problems of any kind, problems with ID systems on parlor farms and a few other things. It'll still keep me fairly busy but it should lessen the work load (for a little while) so I can spend more time at home if/when needed.

I'm not sure what the hold up is on progress on the chicken barn but they haven't done a damn thing since Tuesday morning !!!

Progress was made in other areas though. Dad got the water line dug up to where the barn addition will be next spring.

I'm planning on adding 64' onto this barn to bring it to a total of 54'x160', or the size I should have have built it 3 years ago :lol_hitti

It'll add space for another 70ish steers. Once this addition is complete I'll let things shake out for a few years before building the 54'x204' barn to the South of the current barn

You gotta have a plan to look ahead to give yourself an idea where you're going. These items fall in the 1,3,5,7 year plan. The two existing buildings are the 48x112 hayshed and the 54x96 cattle shed. #1 is the 64' addition next spring. #2 may be happening this year, it'll be an area to house the chute and vaccinate the cattle in the short term and a sick animal pen in the long term. #3 is a 60'x120 or 60'x160' machine/hay shed. #4 is a 54'x304' cattle barn. That is the largest barn that will fit in that spot before it gets to be a lot of dirt to move. It'll more than likely be a 54'x204' shed but you gotta plan big at first I guess :D

We got the water line dug in all the way to where the steer barn addition will be. The roll was 300' long and there is about 4' sticking out of each end. We dug 292' of trench 8' deep whilst putting 22 hrs on the excavator. SLOW going good grief. At least it's done now though !!

35826896151_573c505ed6_q.jpg
35778958252_916b045dd0_b.jpg

Lift me up pops !!!
35826889961_20335d5768_q.jpg

It was 88F and 95% humidity. Damn miserable.
35570460790_122d35c69b_q.jpg

The drain tile with the pipe coming out of it goes to the North and extends underground past where the wall of barn will be. The other pipe that is empty is going to be used for a line to the south if ever needed. It was easy to add now and will be impossible to add after concrete is poured for the addition.

Thanks for following along !! Our farm is tiny compared to some relatives I have in North Dakota that run 15,000 acres ... our 800 seems like a hobby farm to them :lol_hitti

My shop and dads are set up very similar to each others. The large toolboxes and hanging tools are on the South walls, the parts storage are on the West walls (which is directly across from the garage door) and the metal/wood fab stuff is on the North wall. I'll dig up some pictures and post them up tonight for you to look at.

When I purchased this add-a-grapple I was forewarned that it had a leaky cylinder. Well they both had oil running out from the shields once I hooked it up.
35925395866_537b6672d1_b.jpg

I ended up putting new seals and gaskets in one of them and tightening things on the other to get them to hold pressure. O-Rings with gaps are never good :bounce:
35796069452_c1b68dabec_b.jpg

It's first test was to get rid of this large pile of loose straw in the hay shed.
35796068892_1dbf65a295_b.jpg

Passed with flying colors !!! This is going to be a very nice attachment to have. The last time I did this it took over an hour to clean it all up with a bucket and hand fork. 5 scoops and about 15 minutes later I was done !!

South wall that has the bulk of the tools. There are a fair number of "vintage" or "collectible" tools in the boxes and hanging up but they all get used when they need to. They look nice hanging there and are handy to grab when needed :D
35160347483_4ed59d3bf8_b.jpg

The West wall is a half completed work in progress. It is home to the majority of the parts storage. Large tools are on the racking with bulk parts, IE Plumbing supplies, electrical supplies, garage door parts, lawn mower parts, and much more are in the white pails. The file cabinets are the only remnants of the makeshift organizational system I employed at our last place and house mostly car audio and Jeep parts. The gray Druham cabinet is a must. It will house any combination of hanging parts bins so the possibilities are endless inside that thing !! It houses my nails, screws and bolts grades cheese, 5 and 8 mostly. The hidden locker next to it has all my paints, oils, WD-40 and such in it. It was donated by a fellow GJ member who now regrets getting rid of it :lol_hitti
35130361554_a178d0bd86_b.jpg

The North wall has the wood/metal chop saws and a couple grinders. The shelves are mostly full of junk with some tools mixed in.
35160346073_f7818e213b_b.jpg

The East wall has cord hooks, garage door, welder, man door and air compressor. It is also home to the most important shop fixture .... the radio !!! The cabinet in the top right corner houses a JVC shelf system that I purchased 15 years ago. It fills this little 24x24 area with enough noise to drown out any swearing that inevitably occurs. Heat is provided by a wood stove in the winter with a 5,000w electric hanging heater as a backup. My little people had to park the Frozen Jeep in the shop tonight because it needed to have "stuff done" before they could use it again.
35160344183_b5f25d79dd_b.jpg

And here's proof it gets used and it's not just a toy .... er wait .... I gotta figure out how to get a bigger battery in it as it barely makes it to the barn and back before it's dead. That will be a winter project

Clean your lawn mower.
I don't use it often but when I do it won't cut everything on one tank of gas :3gears:

P.S. - Why'd you edit the passion out of your post ?!?! :dunno:

P.P.S. - I've cut my grass three times so far this year, it was almost four today but I fixed/used my grapple bucket instead which proved to be a much better use of my time

P.P.P.S. - Start your build thread so I can harass you in your own turf :D

The cart came from a local department store that closed up. Dad and I got a bunch of them and he uses them as parts shelves. We each cut one down to make a nice rolling table. It is very nice to have !!
35808783982_cb48b97859_b.jpg

In the new shop (one day) I will be putting a few of these pots in the floor and have the heavy things like a large vise and a large bench grinder and a few others mounted to stands on wheels that will lock in to the D-hook in the floor.

I like that D-ring in the floor idea. That's great that the grapple works as well as it does, that will save tons of time around there, I'm sure.

The hostas are really taking off this year by the barn !!!
35952994096_5534d391cd_b.jpg

We did a few spot checks and it appears that the winter wheat is ready to combine so we got the combine all ready to harvest. Lots of stuff to check, grease, and adjust before we can use it each season.
35952995836_462a6d5591_b.jpg

Dad completing the first pass. It looks like it'll do about 50bu/acre and is roughly 15% moisture. It's a tad wet so well have to run the bin fan for a little while to dry it down.
35952993376_9f2f77e08d_b.jpg

There was a monster thunderstorm coming so we have to hustle to get it all done before the rain.
35605773090_c0393352d6_b.jpg

This morning they started hanging rafters on the chicken barn.
35861651191_37a02293c3_b.jpg

They were here about 11:15am.
35861654851_c18ebf7fd2_b.jpg

By 5pm they were done. 16 guys, 9 hours, 156 rafters in 95F heat. Not too bad :lol_hitti
35952992156_1cb837e04c_b.jpg

I think pictures of the skeletons of buildings look really neat.
35605773220_3a1a1e39ab_b.jpg

We got about a half inch of rain last night with more forecast this morning so we'll see if they show up again today to start hanging tin.

That IS impressive!
Everything is straight and plumb too !!

No kidding, those guys obviously run like a well oiled machine!
For a crew of 16 guys they worked very well together. This crew has built 43 of this exact barn in the last 2.5 years so they've gotten used to each other I guess.

That last shot is awesome. I bet that's a Suburban parked in there! Haha
It is a skid loader trailer parked almost exactly in the center of the barn. Looks tiny though !!

There were ONLY 9 guys here today but they managed to get a fair bit done. They installed all the wall girts today.
35881879861_0df5c38e07_b.jpg

The got two rows of tin on the entire east wall.
35973744786_55b1b62f62_b.jpg

They got about half the tin two rows high on the west wall. That is 3/8 of a mile of tin laid end to end total today. Not bad. Oh, and they got all the purlins nailed onto the roof. Rough 3.75 miles of 2x4's laid end to end. Good grief.
35973745286_4c34d45b2a_b.jpg

And they managed to break a corner off the concrete pad on the side of the barn.
35973744016_d3fe40691d_b.jpg

Guess what's going on in this picture ??? Ok, I'll tell you. The Silver Bullet is for me while I mix the eggs with some Golden Malrin and put it in a cool whip tub. ***** LOVE eggs and the Golden Malrin makes them sleepy forever. Win win win win. I've noticed them hanging out in my barn in the evenings so it's time to make them not alive.
