Do you happen to have any experience with the SureCall Fusion4Home? My dad has a 1,200 sq ft shop with metal roof and siding. The signal outside is good but once you go inside it's basically nonexistent. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Here is an Amazon link to the model I've been selling. I will add Splitters, cables and interior antennas as needed and they have worked out very well. Definitely not the least expensive model but they work awesome.

I asked our company Master Electrician to help me for a morning getting power to the pair of boxes like this on my most recent camera job. I figured it was the smart thing to do :D
39177533991_ef62a00509_z.jpg

I also broke the winch on the grinder mixer. The brass bushings were worn out and things got sloppy and it got all boogered up.
25312613208_04bc13f149_z.jpg

Just so happens Dad had a chunk of brass the exact perfect size. To avoid crushing it in the vise while I cut it I put it around a bolt and went at it with a hacksaw.

Test fit it all together ....
27400682779_90c2cd0fa2_z.jpg

And put it back in service.

Nice to see them back at work on the chicken barn. All that space not being used is enough to drive any farmer crazy.

If that's the case, I'm surprised you can locate things.

Great Grandpa lived 6 miles away and my Grandpa inherited all his stuff, when the farm built a shop 20yrs ago it all got moved out of Grandpa's garage into the shop, when Dad and my Uncle quit milking cows most of it got moved down to Dad's current shop. He's got all kinds of time over winter to organize things so it's actually pretty easy to find stuff.

Nice to see them back at work on the chicken barn. All that space not being used is enough to drive any farmer crazy.
No kidding !!!! Seems like a huge waste to have it sitting idle all this time. There has been VERY little progress since June/July area. I don't understand how they can have all these barns sitting on their books with nothing to show for them for months and months. I've been told by a few other growers that their barns sat for 6-12 months AFTER being completed before birds were delivered !!

I called the construction manager a few weeks back ...
Me: When are you going to come finish my barn?
Him: We're not sure yet, why?
Me: I want to know when I need to have the 300 calves I purchased out of the barn.
Him: Uhhhhhhhhh
Me: How clean do I need to pressure wash it after the calves are out ?
Him: You don't really have 300 calves in there do you ?!?!
Me: Why don't you send 15 guys out here to look around ?? May as well finish it if they're all here.
Him: Haha very funny.

When I talked to the guys today they said the six of them should have everything installed in eight days or less. It's about time !!!!

All the gas lines are run and hooked up. It's all 1" stuff coming in and getting run around. The barn is split into halves with a 1" pipe running right down the middle of the barn.
39202173812_43d768b325_z.jpg

The genset is plumbed in.
39202174612_911d013b2b_b.jpg

I'd imagine this is just a little faster than the hand thread cutters I have :bounce:
39202174382_8f4038a648_z.jpg

The shrouds for the big fans are assembled.
39230133911_871f48dea7_b.jpg

There will be six of these winches in each half of the barn. The water lines will be raised and lowered with them.
39202174512_4f84cf0042_z.jpg

They have started putting the feeders together.
39202174262_39eee75217_b.jpg

These boxes are still full waiting to get put together .... good grief. I'm not sure how many are in the barn but I'll sure let y'all know when I find out !!
39202174642_e8351f6b39_b.jpg

The flex auger system will dump the feed into these grey bins and they will supply the feed lines in the barn. Three feed lines on each side of the barn.

Looking at all those feeders, and the other equipment, it really shows how large of an operation it will be. I predict it's going to be quite noisy in there, once the chicks arrive. :)

Yeah, it's starting to hit me that this might just be a fair bit of work to take care of this thing:lol_hitti

I've never been in a barn with the chickens are older than 1 day. When they are little and fuzzy yellow there is a definite light chirpy roar in the barn.

Last night I had to go on a service call because one Lely Milking Robot on a farm wasn't communicating with the server and quit milking. I ended up replacing a couple really crusty RJ45EZ ends. Whomever put these on didn't put the protective boots on correctly and moisture got in.

Well mother nature is being rather cold and heartless so it's gonna be a long week.

Time to fire up the septic heater. There is a 1500w heater in this pipe with a fan that blows warm air towards the tank so the pipe from the house to the tank doesn't freeze. It's only 16" down at the shallowest so this is a necessity. There is a timer set to run for a half hour every two hours.

Yesterday the Mrs. asked for help baking Christmas cookies. I helped with one batch and she released me from service when this came out of the oven :lol_hitti

The inlet vents on the barn are installed. They will let fresh air into the barn while the fans are running.

These are the insulated covers inside the barn by each one.
38410023205_fdf59f03f1_z.jpg

I do not know for sure what this set of winches is for. Most likely they will be used to open and close the inlet vent covers.

Yesterday morning it was -13F here. Damn cold. The steers don't seem to mind when it's this cold, they put their frosty layer on and just eat more to stay warm
38622734754_b574ac8f81_z.jpg

Yesterday at work I got called to a farm because the parlor was having intermittent communication issues. There are 12 boxes like this one in this parlor. I tested every comm wire in the whole works and found a bad one. This equipment communicates via a CANbus network so if one wire is bad, nothing works correctly.
27553168159_d7379482f4_z.jpg

Each wire comes back to a power supply box like this one. I made an adapter for my Fluke CableIQ with alligator clips on one end so I can clip it onto any wires and test a bunch at once. It was the first time I really got to use it and it worked great. We replaced the bad wire and it's been working like new again.
27553168119_1ee880975e_z.jpg

As I was leaving I spotted this outside the barn and had to ask about it. I noticed a new one inside so I figured this one was being retired. The bearing on the pulley side had totally disintegrated and the pump was locked up. Long story short, it's mine now for the low price of $0. Score :bounce:
38622734764_d676a7481e_z.jpg

The chicken coop guys got the rest of the feeders assembled. The pile looks WAY bigger in person !!!
38622734704_a4389ece1e_b.jpg

It's a bit hard to see but the water and feed line cables and drops are installed on the entire South side of the barn.

Wow, nice score on the compressor! Looks like the feet will need a little attention, too.
The price was right so I couldn't pass it up

The feet should be an easy fix. It'll probably sit around for a while before I do anything with it. I've got to build a shop to fix it in first :lol_hitti

The chicken barn guys made some major progress yesterday. They got the water lines put together and got all the little water deals installed. I was told there are over 4,000 of these little deals in the barn.
38654762504_6f320ac321_z.jpg

One of the south water lines. There will be a total of 12 in the barn, 6 in each half.
27585594109_f42264a806_z.jpg

They also got the feed lines hung and the bins installed on them. Looking South.
27585594229_3bc34e902d_z.jpg

Looking North.
38485163475_b44ebb72e1_b.jpg

These are waiting to be hung on the north side.

Wow, that’s a lot of feeders! How many birds when in full operation?
I asked the guys this morning and there are 640 red feeders in the barn. Good grief !! There are going to be 46,000 birds in the barn and they will go from fuzzy yellow chicks to a 6.5lb full grown chicken in 48 days.

Great Thread. You are living the dream.
Some days it feels like someone else's dream but I do enjoy it :lol_hitti

That's a lot of chickens.

When they are fully grown, how do you round up and ship that many live chickens?

After shipping, do you clean everything and start again for another 46 days?

It is a lot of chickens !!

If I remember correctly the chickens are caught by hand and put in cages for the ride to the processing plant around 15 miles away.

The half the baby chicks were in has been cleaned to the floor after each batch but things have changed I guess. I've heard of a few different approaches being used but don't know which one I'll be using to clean the barn. I'll let y'all know once I do though :bounce:

Well it's cold here. The #wtforecast app agrees. This is a funny forecast app !!!

The ol' mercury thermometer says it's even colder. -23F air temp, feels like -43F ..... good grief.

The sunrises sure are pretty when it's so cold out.

Those temperatures look bad but when I look at the wind speed that would cut right through you.

With 46,000 chicks how much heat do they generate?

Have a good New Year.

Hi'ya Dwight. Thanks for stopping by

Getting the mail this morning in the usual shorts and sweatshirt this morning was a bit chilly but nothing you can't get used too :dunno:

I don't know how much heat they generate yet but if I'm not mistaken the barn will be kept in the upper 80's when the birds first come and get cooler as they get older.

So it's not unreasonable to say you're going to be producing practically 6,300 pounds of chicken a day....less of course once the processing etc takes place but still, scale of economy rules....

Oh yes, Happy New Year and a safe and sucessful 2018 to all!

There are anywhere from 3-5% of the birds that don't make it the full 48 days so the hope is that there will be 142-144 tons of birds shipped out.

There will be 21 semi loads of stuff for each flock.
1 load of bedding, usually sunflower hulls
1 load of baby chicks, fuzzy and yellow
10 loads of feed, corn based and all natural
9 loads of live chicken to ship out, ready for BBQ sauce

I hauled a few totes of wood in the shed before this cold snap. I like these tubs quite a bit !!

These cattle are so sloppy. They stand there and flick the water around with their tongues and think it's funny. All it does is make a damn mess !!!

Fairly impressed with the plumbing in the chicken barn.
24565471397_d19227a1af_b.jpg

This is a rather neat idea. Monitor the pressure on the intake and discharge sides of the filter cartridge to know when it's time to change it. Smart.
24565471757_79915caf7b_z.jpg

I had them leave an extra outlet so I can plumb in a sink and 110v water heater.

It has been a crazy busy week and it's not slowing down yet !!

It's been quite cold here for the last few weeks (-25f and rarely above 0f for long) and we've come up with clever ways to stay warm. I put my fish house heater in the work van to create a warm spot while we were wiring some stuff out in the cold.
27751658159_b938367fda_z.jpg

On the way to the job site on Thursday we got to see some Sun Dogs. Seems to only happen when it's damn cold out.
27751658359_1306d489a3_z.jpg

A lot of progress was made on the chicken coop this past week. The generator is all hooked up and ready to run.
27751658329_d1932fd762_b.jpg

The inlet vent control motors were cabled up and set up.
27751658109_28ffdd1faa_b.jpg

The feed line has been installed and they got the drop tubes cut and put in.
39528022921_77dbc31da4_b.jpg

The feeders and waterers are ready to go in the whole barn.
39528022461_aa78294c1a_b.jpg

Dad and I started installing the Poultry Hawk. It was surprisingly easy to hang everything up but there is a bracket every 8' so it'll take a fair bit of time to do.
39528022371_a8d5853209_z.jpg

We got roughly 1/4 of the barn done today and couldn't resist hanging it up !!
27751658069_824bd6f5de_z.jpg

Really beefy 12v DC drive motor and gear box. It has a hand stamped metal data plate. Don't see that often anymore.

I hadn't noticed earlier that the red feeder assemblies were attached to cables from the ceiling. That's great to be able to pull everything up, so you have the floor empty, for a clean sweep.

That's exactly it. The feeders, waterers and circulation fans are all on winch/cable systems so they can be lifted as close to the ceiling as possible to make cleaning the barn easier.

We got a little piece of countertop put up in the control room in the chicken barn and put food on it. We figured it'd be a long day as we wanted to do our best to get the Poultry Hawk installed and running today.
38837413484_43c708924c_o.jpg

We hooked up another trailer to use. My father-in-law came to help so we split up. Dad went on the first trailer and put the angle brackets into the rafters and the father-in-law and I followed and put the hanging brackets on and hung the 1x3" galvanized rail. We were doing a 24' section in under 10 minutes !!!
38837413374_70a3a4d6f0_o.jpg

In the center of the picture you can see the J brackets and the galvanized rail the Poultry Hawk will ride on.
24689498617_5ea42ba8e7_o.jpg

The track makes a loop at the ends of the barn so the last things we put up were the 90's at the ends of the barn. We finished before 6pm and are very happy with how it turned out.

I remember checking out the Poultry Hawk when you first posted it. IIRC it has an on-board battery to power it. Any thoughts about hanging a separate 12 VDC bus to power it and therefor eliminate the battery? From my (limited) experience in dairy barns, this would take a lot of thought to protect the power bus from dust and moisture, but eliminating the battery weight and lifespan could make it worth it.

I'd love to do away with the battery and have a "plugged in" solution. I don't think I'd be able to hang anything in the barn that wouldn't get dusty and corroded in a short amount of time. I do plan to use the style charger on the Lely Juno 100 and 150 Feed Pusher robots. There are a pair of spring loaded bars on the wall connected to the charger and a pair of flat plates connected to the battery on the feed pusher. When it drives into it the charging begins. I think that plugging the Poultry Hawk in daily will wear any type of plug out in short order. Over 10 years it'd be 3,652 couple/decouple cycles. Plus, the Juno style would just plain ol' be sweet !!!

Although this appears to be from Farming Simulator 2017 it shows the charging bars on the charger very well.
38858166194_ecb74d2bfe_o.jpg

The long silver bars on the Juno connect to the battery and charge the Juno when they contact the bars on the charging stand.
