Day 25 - They've grown from chicken fingers to McChicken burgers.
40412697742_73858880e6_b.jpg

This past Wednesday I went back to Lisbon, ND to work on the networking stuff in the new robotic parlor we're installing. The Super Duper 8 in Lisbon has a lackluster breakfast so I brought a hotplate, cast iron pan, bacon, eggs, potatoes and a coffee maker along. I cooked breakfast while addressing cameras. It was awesome !!
26585565358_f87a995fde_z.jpg

Wall mount cabinet is filling up. White cords are internet stuff, blue cords are for cameras. There is a US-24-250w for the cameras and a US-24-250w and a US-24 for the internet stuff in the parlor/office area. There will be an additional US-16-150w going in on the bottom to tie all the extra robot comm lines together. There will be an 8 strand 450' piece of armored TiniFiber running out to the big barn to extend all three networks out there as well.
40412698022_afa63f79d7_z.jpg

It should look nice once it's all done and all the dust is cleaned off !!
26585565138_d8b69e641b_z.jpg

This is the box the TiniFiber will be running out in the barns. I believe it is 3'x3'x1'. Damn big !!!
40412698192_5f77734bb7_z.jpg

The GEA VPU for the cow activity system and two of the Ubiquiti US-8-150w's already mounted. I'm waiting on a third US-8-150w and a 3"x3" piece of wire duct to hide everything in. May as well make it all purrrrrdy !!
26585564928_95b52d3907_z.jpg

Someone ran a control wire for the footbath panel and used Honeywell "Cat 6 Plus" cabling. Haha. Honeywell cable isn't bad stuff but it's funny that someone fell for the Cat 6 Plus label and paid more for it :lol_hitti
40412698292_b2ba46bb2d_z.jpg

On the other hand, this is the first time I've worked with Black Box branded cabling and I've got to say I'm impressed. Cheap PVC jacket with a SS mesh and every pair is individually shielded. Impressive but a PITA to terminate !!
26585565218_f8b467ff51_z.jpg

Punch them down into a shielded keystone jack and we're good to go !!
26585565298_a94fc419a9_z.jpg

I guess I do A/V stuff as well. Look at them there Monster HDMI inserts
26585565258_17320ba033_z.jpg

The local phone company guy ran a few lines for phones in the barn. Every one of his ends looked like the one on the left. Good thing they're just for phones ...
40412698672_d72a18f0e9_z.jpg

Thursday the floor coating peeps showed up and ground the floor smooth. They came in with some serious stuff. The grinder had a 30hp Kawasaki engine, the vacuum that kept the dust away from the grinder had a 3ph, 480v, 10hp motor. They made me a bridge so I wouldn't get their nice clean floor dirty.

Geez, most of the things shown in this latest post, I've never seen in my life...other than the chicks, and bacon & eggs. :lol_hitti

The phone guy's plug connections sure do look like ****. I assume he rarely has someone come along behind him & do a quality check on his work.

I'll gladly explain what it all is if you'd like. As far as the rotary parlor, I'll be back out there in a week or so and can talk whatever pics you'd like

The switch that the crusty Cat5e line plugged into was clearly mounted off plumb so that had to be fixed. I knew I never needed to look at it again but since I knew it was off I had to go back and make it right. I slept better that night. I don't know how some people go about their day not giving a ****. Do your job and do it well or do something else.

Good grief they're getting big. They seem crowded but there are large open spots behind me.

This is a picture of the daily picture taker. Nothing fancy, just a Ubiquiti G3-Micro hanging from an extension cord.

The weatherman said it was going to snow again so I had to go plow the snow from the other day I hadn't plowed yet. The blade fits in the shed with the skid loader but I had to get creative.
26597151718_6bc33da6ab_z.jpg

It was starting to snow when the last load of feed was going into the barn.
38657449010_308740531c_z.jpg

Full blown snowstorm about 5 minutes after the garage door shut !!!
26597151828_427ac52d4b_z.jpg

Sure looks like the 3" the weatherman said we were going to get ....
26597151768_cddd774d4b_z.jpg

We broke out the Wii and played some Guitar Hero III while it was snowing. This is Lil' Miss Rocker and her sister The Blurrrrrrr.

Totally amazed on how big the chicks have gotten in the last 4 weeks.
Who would have believed they would fill the barn up so quickly? Thanks for the regular updates.

Been raining heavily last two days. Just so glad that it's warm enough that it's not snow. Love the way snow looks but towards the end of the season get tired of moving it.

I agree, it just baffles me how some people think doing things half-assed is just fine. I'm not perfect by any means, but I do make my best attempt at doing things right.

No need to take time to explain all the electronic stuff you do for little 'ol me. :) Yesterday looking at your photos, I just found myself thinking "damn, there's a whole lot I don't know"...but that's alright, it would probably make my brain ache anyway. :D

The little chicks are getting huge!
Looking at your snow shots reminds me that I need to get off my **** & shovel more white **** before it snows again tonight. You know...just so I can say I had it clean for a while.:lol_hitti

jblnut,

If you're still looking for a grain level indicator for your feed bins, check out "LevAlert". Installs from the outside of the bin. Can be wired with a switch also.

Thanks for posting. Cool to learn about the chicken farming process.

All the warm moist air that is exhausted out of the barn created a cloud this morning. Pretty neat looking !!
25676005927_9321dd91b8_z.jpg

Day 29 - I did the math today and figuring each set of wings and legs takes an ounce of BBQ sauce slathered all over them it'd take almost 350 gallons to eat all the chickens in the barn. That's a lot of sauce !!
40504181012_00a6263580_b.jpg

They are incredibly curious creatures. If I stand still for more than a few seconds they'll run over and peck at my boots.
40547140031_b181be118d_z.jpg

Although it looks very full there is still quite a bit of open space in the barn. They're going to be here for another two weeks though. It's going to get pretty crowded in here !!
25676006127_f3220280c5_z.jpg

At Leedstone we've started an install of a cow ID system this week. I forgot my little mini crock pot so I had to improvise and find another heat source. I put my soup on the vac pump around 9am and it was nice and warm by lunch time :bounce:
40504180592_19cbae932c_z.jpg

After supper we goofed around for a while and Leo decided to pull himself and chew on the table while trying to get the remote. He's crawling all over and getting into EVERYTHING. Every few minutes it seems like he's stuck somewhere new and we have to free him so he can go on more adventures.

Great pictures. Leo looks so focused on the remote. Funny.
He'll be driving skid loader and telling me what to do before I know it. It's amazingly fun watching the little people learn new stuff and watch that lightbulb go on when they figure something new out.

His dad didn't do many techie things today. I helped put new rubber in a double 24 parlor today. This is one of the workers "cleaning" out the area we will be laying the rubber out to get ready to drag into the parlor.
39855944064_9fcde88c24_z.jpg

One roll will go on each side of the parlor. The cows stand in the parlor for 8-10 minutes in one place and this provides a huge level of comfort for them. The rubber is 1" thick, 6' wide and 62' long. Each roll weighs right around 1,800lbs. once we got the old rubber out we rolled the new stuff out and grabbed on and drug it in. It took 8 guys and a 4-wheeler to get the new stuff in. I don't have any pictures of that as it was GO TIME once we started and they were shut down until we were finished. PS: That't not mud :lol_hitti

Which is why I'm glad to be a suburban Dad who works in an office . . .

I have no tolerance for the fragrance of nature .

Cheers

Jim

Used to think in my younger days, that I'd love to be a farmer.

Had a college buddy who dad's a dairy farmer with over 500acres above Watertown, NY. And forty yrs later, I can still remember the smell. Also learn the hard way what the ceramic handle is for with the electric fences. :shocking:

Do the rubber rolls lay over the top of the "not mud" after it's mostly cleaned out, or is the floor sprayed clean with a hose first?

The floor is sprayed clean and the rubber is rolled out and cut to fit. I got some pictures of it when it was cleaned after milking today.

The chicks are still growing. It's neat to see just how much they seem to grow every day !!
39730107275_e4b5164cbb_z.jpg

There are some wet spots in the barn that we're going to throw some wood shavings on. Hopefully it'll help dry things up a little bit.
39730107205_b459f3e0e6_z.jpg

The fans in the barn are on a timer. On Level 1 they run for so long and are shut off for so long. On Level 2 they run longer and are shut off less, on Level 3 they are full on until the temp comes down where it's supposed to be. The 6-36" fans weren't keeping the barn cool today so we put one of the 54" tunnel fans in on Level 2 and 2 54" fans in on Level 3. If memory serves me correctly I believe they each move 40,000cfm's.
39730107325_6d42336aa1_z.jpg

The steers are always so happy when they get fresh bedding to screw around in. Jumpy and happy

I had some time yesterday to put a hitch on the generator trailer. Never know what you'll need to pull behind it. I'll post pics up in a week or two if my idea works out. :D

The chickens look great!

What is the humidity in the chicken barn like with the cold weather? Are any of the fans set to control off humidity, and if not is that a concern with flock health?

We try to find the balance of enough ventilation to keep the humidity down and still keep the barn warm. It's ideal to keep the humidity under 65% but on snowy days it shoots up to high 70's. In a perfect world the fans will run and cool the barn off enough for the heaters to kick on for a bit to dry things out before the fans kick on again.

The fans are set to turn on and off based on temperature. In a warmer climate the fans based on humidity work but up here the potential to cool off too much isn't worth trying it....or so I'm told.

I FINALLY got back home tonight after being out of town since early Tuesday working on the robotic rotary project again. I made it home in time for book reading time and hugs before bed, talked with Mama Bear for a bit and went out to check on the chickens and steers. Dad was taking care of all of them this week while I was gone.

The flash on the camera didn't work quite right but you can tell they're getting HUGE !!
38909726460_5d6d6b615b_z.jpg

We brought the Pizzazz along this time and cooked breakfast, lunch and supper on it for three days.
38909726900_7158f53821_z.jpg

GEA makes us use a very fancy tool-less Cat5e plug and they're a huge PITA to terminate. They look nice when they're done though !!
38909726660_f510ee56ca_z.jpg

The networking cabinet is 97% done. Everything looks neat and clean and tidy :D
38909726700_193deb782d_z.jpg

The 450' piece of TiniFiber showed up so we ran that on Wednesday morning. Super nice stuff to work with !!
40009592754_ec8175826f_z.jpg

Instead of a large fiber box I opted to try using keystone jack LC connectors and although it turned out ok and works fine I hate it. Next time splice boxes will be used. This looks like **** and they're not protected like they should be ....
38909741320_7709e37e50_z.jpg
38909726560_5291429f85_z.jpg

This box is out in the center of the cow barns. There are three POE+ switches in it and they run cameras, CowScout, and Wifi Access Points. The top box is for the cow ID system.
40009592654_16a58d3507_z.jpg

See look, ugly but functional ....
38909726750_7693a2cf2c_z.jpg

The electricians had each circuit labeled with where the wires were going !!!
38909726620_9219245b27_z.jpg

This is a MASSIVE dairy barn !!!
38909726820_4208559fa0_b.jpg

I sure do like using a lift around the cattle. I don't mind them but they're so damn nosy they will literally pull stuff out the lift and my tool bag and that gets old !!
38909726580_bd8936954b_b.jpg

This is one of the ID boxes out in the barns.

The chicks will be full grown and going out to be processed next week Friday. They are a good size already and there's still quite a bit of room in the barn but it sure is getting full !!

I'll have 18,000' of Cat6, 450' of fiber, 225 wall jacks or plugs, 14 Wifi AP's, 32 cameras, 14 managed switches, 6 different point to multi point links, and 3 PC's installed before this is all done. That is just for the WiiFi, camera and cow id system. The parlor has something nuts like 120 miles of wire for it alone.

It is a neat thing to be part of.

That's quite the system you guys are installing in that barn. And wow, I can't even imagine pulling that much wire!

Looking forward to see what happens with the chicks on moving day next week.

In fairness we are redoing the entire network on the farm as well as all new everything in the new parlor. Once they got a taste of how a well setup network works in the new areas they wanted it everywhere. Gotta toot my horn a little once in a while :lol_hitti

I'm excited for them to go so we can see what the next steps bring. The bedding is getting a little wet and cakey so it'll be nice to get it cleaned up and dried out for the next flock.

Sunday the girls and I went out for a sledding good time. They couldn't get enough of it with just about nonstop giggles.

We went in the steer barn and Lily helped push up corn.

We then went into the chicken barn to hang out with these monsters.

I hadn't walked the East side of the chicken barn since the birds came and found some neat dust/poop icicles.

When I brought the dump trailer back to dads place I noticed a sad looking gravity box. Gonna have to take that off and find the leak.

How does the bird removal happen, do let’s say 6 birds to one crate? Can’t believe they cooperate.

How many people, how long?

Not sure if they do it the same way today, but I worked in chicken barns back in the early 1970s - a local farm would hire a half dozen or so of us teenagers to transfer the chickens from the barn into crates, which were then loaded on the truck that carried them to the processing plant.

We would set up a short section of fence, and herd a bunch of them up against it. They'd pile up against the fence, and then we'd reach in the pile and grab them by the legs. We had to work fast, otherwise the birds on the bottom of the pile could suffocate. If I recall correctly we'd grab four birds in each hand (one chicken leg in between each finger), then stuff them into the crates. Then, we'd reset the fence and repeat the process until the barn was emptied - when you're talking 50,000 birds, it was a big job.

It was dirty, nasty work...at the end of the day my arms and hands would be covered with scratches from their feet and beaks, plus they tended to poop all over when they got excited. My mother would make me change out of my work clothes on the back porch before I could come in the house. :)

I did the same when I was in High school ( 42 years ago)but we would do it in darkness while they were asleep.
The coop had a red or yellow light that the chicken's cant see in their vision spectrum and they would just stay planted and not move. you would pick up three in each hand and take them to the Semi truck. the driver would take the chicken and place them in the create. Each create held 12 chickens. If I remember correctly there was 12 kids and we would do 2 coups, took us about 6 hours.

I walked through the barn for the last time with this flock this morning.
40851078761_af57281757_z.jpg

They have gotten used to the Poultry Hawk for the most part but I had a ladder on there today and they scattered like crazy again. I used the ladder to put up a could temp sensor boards and hang a few other things on the ceiling so they would be out of the way for the live haul guys tonight.
40851078711_e34e9ca12d_z.jpg

We took the dividers out this morning and Dad had the good idea of using a cattle ear tag to number them so we knew what order they went in next time.
40851078681_295f24c085_z.jpg

Live haul trucks are here !! Road restrictions went on yesterday so there will be 10 semis total of chicken hauled out tonight.

There were two fork trucks running the baskets in and out. This one is empty.

This one is full. There are 28 chickens in each basket. There are 7 guys putting the chickens in the baskets. They will load a truck every 30 minutes. These guys MOVED !!!

There are 160 baskets with 4,480 chickens being hauled on each semi. They weigh 6.5lbs since they were in the barn a few extra days so there is just shy of 30,000lbs of chicken on each truck.

These guys work in almost total darkness. They had headlamps with red bulbs and the fork trucks had red lights on them. The chickens sat down and slept. It was pretty neat.

It's a little sad to see them go, but I look forward to pictures of the next flock.

Presumably you're completely immersed in the barn turn-around process, but we (well I at least) would love to see some pictures of your bedding cleaning machine at work if you get a chance.

I picked it up from a neighbor to try out before I decide if I'm going to purchase one. If it works as slick as everyone says it'll take only a few hours to go through and clean the bedding. We'll have the International 884 hooked onto it and the Farmall H running the generator to power the pressure washer. Dad will be pressure washing while I clean the bedding. After it's all washed and cleaned we'll go through and blow all the dust off everything.

We all have sneezy runny noses and Leo decided to take advantage of that.

The live haul crew sure made a mess of my driveway area ....

When we got out to the barn this morning this cloud greeted us. They didn't leave any fans running and it was 98% humidity in the barn and the ammonia was so strong you couldn't breath. I turned two of the big fans on and it cleared out pretty quick.

Sort of a random picture but this is the board we mounted the temp sensor on and the hook Dad put up to hold them up.

Pressure washing rig all setup ready to go. There are faucets every so often on the wall with the small fans we'll hook up to for water.

Tons of power. The ol' H doesn't have to work very hard to run the genny which is powering the pressure washer.

I picked up the bedding cleaning machine last night from a neighbor. I graduated high school with his oldest son and they also have a Gold'N'Plump barn. He said I could try it out to see how well it worked before I purchased my own at the tune of $15k or so.

What a dusty ordeal.

The cake gets picked up and placed in this hopper. When it gets full the Housekeeper dumps it onto a pile.

Uncleaned on the left, cleaned on the right. This this is hands down the best way to do this. Once I get the hang of the machine it shouldn't take more than a few hours next time to do the whole barn.

Cool pics. As a city boy I like seeing the different tools, tractors and such.

I could be crazy here, but I have an idea. Short of dropping $15k on a poo picker upper, it seems like it would be worth trying a truck snow plow with HDPE cutting edge or skid steer with a huge light duty bucket on it. Might not be quite as fast, but would be cheaper.

Like this:

Or a high-dump skid steer bucket since you already have a skid steer like the one used here:
