Well a combination of being busy the last few days and being internet lazy has created a pile up of pictures to post so here goes ....

Friday evening a buddy asked if he could borrow the chicken basket so I put it in front of the fan to thaw it out. I came out the next morning and it was totally dry and snow free !!
46589488482_80f3d5f3ed_z.jpg

Saturday morning they were looking extra large !!!
46589488192_64f4c5eb90_z.jpg

We put 6" drain tile in the barn in three places to divide the barn into quarters. These drain tiles are a ****** to get in and out by yourself so Dad built a little deal to mount on the wall with a roller on the end to make it easier. I had my doubts but it worked VERY well !!!
45917225574_496281ee94_z.jpg

Everything lifted to the ceiling so the chicken catcher guys can come do their thing. We lift feed lines up first and keep the water lines down as long as possible before they get there. This time we were cranking them up when the chicken catcher guys got there. They like them up when they arrive but we were running behind a bit ...
45917225474_0f1361da8e_z.jpg

They have arrived !!

"For health's sake, EAT POULTRY!!" is on the sides of all the live haul trailers
46589488292_9e10785985_z.jpg

The lovely Mrs and the little people came to check out the action. The girls were poopered out from pulling each other around.
46589488412_2a1f6ef654_z.jpg

I think Leo would have stood here for an hour had I let him. He kept pointing and "Moo'ing" at the steers. They'd Moo back occasionally and he'd jump and holler with excitement !!!
46589488232_934659b0c6_z.jpg

That brings us up to today. Dad put an extension on the backpack blower that worked very well for doing the ceiling. He went at the ceiling and vents while I tackled the heaters with the Ryobi Jet Blower. We sure made a dusty mess
31715788487_ce137176d0_z.jpg

While he was finishing up I got the Housekeeper all hooked up and ready to go.
31715788527_f3ec06b36e_z.jpg

What an incredible dusty mess !!!
45742260835_bbf654ee00_c.jpg

BlueParrot 450XT headphones and a 3M half mask make it a lot nicer when it's loud and dusty :)
45742261015_b5545bf55c_c.jpg

The muffler elbow contraption was only a few inches below the feed pans. I had to duck under them or my big head would bonk them when I drove under them.
31715788427_b808b764bc_c.jpg

Dad cleaned out the ends of the barn and we used the Housekeeper as a dump wagon to haul it to the pile. It worked very well.

All caught up now time for bed !!

About a week before loadout I get told the date and.tkme they'll leave as well as an expected date of chick arrival. This time it's around the 22nd of January. They shoot for a the barn to be empty for 14-21 days. It gives us plenty of time to get it cleaned and ready again.

JBL: you make HUGE JOBS look fairly easy. WOW!! I hope you wore some sort of safety glasses and just took them off for a picture cause that's a lot of dust/**** that might not feel good in those hazel green eyes.

when you say CHICKEN CATCHERS i'm imagining guys running around grabbing chickens one and two at a time and i'm guessing with 45,000 of them that your chicken catchers have a little better plan?

your kids seem to LOVE FARM LIFE. I remember just standing and watching my Gramps log up in the mountains when I was about 5 years old and whether he was cutting the trees down, choking them to get pulled to landing or loading them up cause he was the owner of his small company and he pretty much did anything. about the only thing he didn't do often was drive the logging trucks to the mills. his D9 was a pretty hefty dozer, but it seems like you've got huge machines yourself along with what sounds like a collection of tractors?

cheers and happy you said your good byes to the last group of feathered friends and hope the new kids behave.

I see what you did there :lol_hitti Yes I certainly need to add goggles to the mix of what I wear while cleaning out the barn. My eyes were boogery for a while after we were done !!

You are imagining correctly. There are 6 guys that grab two at a time and put them in the orange cages to be brought to the processing plant. It is the most gentle way to catch them without injuring them.

The kiddos love going to the barns and seeing/helping with the animals. I'd love to spend some time with a logger doing logger stuff sometime. I sure wouldn't mind having that D9 around the farm !!! I could do all kinds of fun things with a cat that size !!

cheers and happy you said your good byes to the last group of feathered friends and hope the new kids behave.
Oh don't worry, they won't be missed

It happens. Not quite that quickly though as the barn needs to be at temp for 72-96hrs before the chicks arrive. I've heard of them pushing you off a day or two though which would not be fun either.

JBL: thanks again for answering all my questions. I can't even imagine how 6 guys pick up 45,000+ chickens in a timely manner 2 at a time. WOW & WOW!!

yep my Gramps had a Cat D6 he owned for work around his house and land clearing projects and the D9 pretty much stayed up in the mountains cutting in those logging roads (if you've ever been on one in a car or truck you'd know how steep some of them are) and landings for his logging company. I used to sit on Gramps lap when I was 6 years old and neither one of us had safety belts, but he usually made me wear a metal helmet and we'd cut roads that were on some pretty steep stuff pushing out big stumps and boulders.

I bet you'd have a lot of fun moving around dirt making easier planting acreage and maybe cutting in ponds in the low areas so you don't have the mud issues you sometimes have.

always fun seeing what's going on at the FARM with you and your family so hope you are getting plenty of sleep and plenty of good food too.

cheers

They move just a *little* faster than we do. They arrived at 4:30PM and were gone by 9:00PM when I went out to check on them. Doing the math that is 27 chickens per person per minute. That is moving right along :lol_hitti

Bah, no big deal. Just have a D6 for stuff "around the house" :lol_hitti

Oh boy the things I could do with a D9, or even his "around the house" D6 !!!

We headed back out to Lisbon, ND Wednesday to so some more work. I got the van loaded up with the necessities.
45786670695_ef1ab3b4bd_z.jpg

Yup that's a 19' SkyJack in there :lol_hitti
46702030931_ab42135a13_z.jpg

Look at this picture and then imagine doing this when it's 4F air temp with a "gentle" 10mph breeze. I hung three cameras, one UAP-AC-M and one NanoStation Loco AC outside in that nasty weather. At least it was sunny !!
46702031061_45f8e8e2b2_z.jpg

After doing a few cameras it was time for lunch in their nice *little* (100'x180'x22') farm shop. We cooked Johnsonville Chedder Brats in our electricians conduit heater.
46702030741_59f6fc36af_z.jpg

6 of them fit quite nicely inside a 1-1/2" piece of 304SS milk line :bounce:
46702030861_7e4557e2bd_z.jpg

I didn't get a picture of the removal tool but he took a piece of SS all thread and welded a washer on the end to push them out.
45786670445_d70855c647_z.jpg

Doesn't get much better than this !!!
46702030961_25fa6678cc_z.jpg

I also needed to work on the scraper communication boxes. The manufacture did an update that made things really grumpy and they all needed to be reset.
45786670805_8489db8a96_z.jpg

On his smartphone the farmer has the ability to see any alarms as well as the exact position of the blades for each of the four scrapers. Poop is getting pretty high tech :lol_hitti
46702031021_0d85599e5a_z.jpg

I'm not sure if there's a Fryin' Pan in your area but if there is they have AMAZING Patty Melts !!!

Saturday Dad and I bedded the steers. Temps are back to "normal" and they are back to taking a bunch of bedding to keep dry again.
46734616001_c4f66e2716_z.jpg

We line them all up outside in the run yard before going in the pens.
46734615711_2e4a25454f_z.jpg

The first bale we opened up was a little warm. Must have been baled a little wet and started to heat. It wasn't hot enough you couldn't hold it but it was warm enough we'll watch the remaining bales for issues.
46734615941_47590865ea_z.jpg

We will be selling 10 fat steers on Tuesday so we marked them with some bright pink livestock paint to make it faster to sort them out early Tuesday.
46734615681_139376f771_z.jpg

Leo saw the wagon this morning and had to have a ride so the little loafer made me drag him around for a while and we ended up in the steer barn.
46734615881_569e2b7e29_z.jpg

This afternoon the lovely Mrs. and I went to my parents place to continue work on the counter top. Dad had already hit it with some 60 grit so we hit it with 120 and then 220 to get it nice and smooth.
46734615631_7781a066d7_z.jpg

Getting after it !!!
46734615581_4631c892ef_z.jpg

This is one of the spots we filled in with the home made putty. It works great but would have looked a bit better had we used finer saw dust ....
46734615831_56a51cd3f6_z.jpg

We stained the bottom and flipped it over onto these metal deals to keep it from sticking to the paper. I have no idea what they started out as but they work very well for finishing work.
46734615571_ec75032423_z.jpg

We use foam brushes to slobber a bunch of stain on and a rag to wipe/work it in. There is a definite art to staining that my wife has mastered very well.
46734615751_dd3a57a811_z.jpg

We didn't remember what we used last time for stain so I put it in a picture this time. Now all I have to do is remember where the picture is in 5yrs when we want to do something else this color.
46734615811_8a3039543e_z.jpg

This is the big putty spot after staining. It actually looks decent. Lets face it though, this is the counter top to try things on because it's going in a school bus :lol_hitti

JBL: speaking of all the steam coming out of your hay bales have any ever self com-busted and caught on fire?

great job on the butcherblock you and your dad started that seems to be in your wife's good hands now!!

so i'm still trying to wrap my head around guys running around catching chickens by hand at 27 per minute. if that is correct I bet the feathers were flying. OMG

nice labeling system on your steers heading to the sale.

last question. what kind of van is that you had your lift loaded on? I didn't see a ramp in there and i'm pretty sure it is too heavy to lift so do you have a couple small ramps buried in the van too?

cheers

We never have but a neighbor had a bunch that started to heat so they took them all out of the shed. They were so hot that when they got them out into the air many started on fire. They hosed them down and ended up composting them and spreading them back in the field. That is why we watch them closely. There are only a dozen or so bales from that field left in the stacking slab and they are all on the outside row so other than getting a bit warm they shouldn't cause issues. They'll be gone in a few weeks.

My lovely Mrs. has talents beyond what I can even begin to imagine and I know when to let her do her thing. Staining is one of them. I HIGHLY doubt the stain will match the other counter top in the bus as it's been in there for 5+ years already but they'll still look nice together.

so i'm still trying to wrap my head around guys running around catching chickens by hand at 27 per minute. if that is correct I bet the feathers were flying. OMG
The cages they put them in are within a few feet of where they're working so it's not as big a deal as it sounds. They take two at a time so it's only a trip every 4 seconds. This time they had 6 (I think) guys catching, usually they have 8. They get paid per barn and quality matters so the faster, and gentler at the same time, they are the more they get paid and the sooner they can go home.

It's the first time we've tried it and so far so good. It should make it easier to sort them later. We'll be buying a cattle scale soon so that will make it A LOT easier to figure out which ones are ready.

The van is a 2014 RAM ProMaster 3500. The lift was loaded with a forklift at the rental yard and was unloaded and loaded by a payloader once we got to the dairy. It only weighs 2,800lbs so the van handled it with ease. I took a bunch of tools and supplies I knew I wouldn't need out before I left but probably wouldn't have needed too.

JBLNut, that photo gave me a little flashback. Thirty-five years ago we took a Mediterranean cruise that stopped in Alexandria Egypt. We noticed red stripes on the backs of many goats and sheep being herded to market. While we were walking through a gnarly section of town a bunch of wide-eyed children pointed at me and ran away. Later a group of elderly men having tea pointed at Liane and laughed. Being clueless, we asked our guide what's up. I frightened the children because thieves can lose a hand in Muslim countries. They assumed I was a badass crook if I lost an arm. The joke that Liane triggered was that she was marked for slaughter (she's a redhead).

We're putting together a time lapse video of how well the Lely Discovery manure scrapers work and it seemed like a good idea to use a couple GoPro Hero 5 Blacks to film it all. They are each powered by a Anker battery pack because the GoPro battery is a bit lackluster and won't last for more than a few hours and I need them to go for a couple days.
31810013757_a1db9440fd_z.jpg

I plan to put the videos on YouTube and I can post a link here when it's all done. They should be pretty neat.

Random photo of the week. I got this Peet Boot Dryer as a Christmas gift and thought to myself "Psh, what do I need that for??". That was until I plugged it in and used it. Holy warm boots Batman this thing is AMAZING!! If you've never put on warm dry boots in the morning you REALLY need to give it a shot !!

JBL: now that you have the YOUTUBE GoPro cameras how about filming the CHICKEN CATCHING OF 45,000 CHICKENS. OMG that would be worth at least a few minutes of fun watching it.

nice HOT DOG (or I guess you have a fancier name) WARMER and just after shoveling Sh*&. I don't recall washing ever before eating on the farm at my uncles after working there, but i'm guessing you guys maybe did clean up a bit since you aren't a teenager where nothing seems to kill you?

cheers

I've watched them catch chickens and although it's a neat process it's not one that can really be filmed. It is 100% dark in the barn. Plus, I don't really like my picture plastered everywhere without knowing about it so I doubt they would either.

I usually wash up a bit when working on a customers farm. At home on the farm I don't usually depending on what we're eating. My rule is "If I can see dirty fingerprints on my food, I should have washed". Hot dog buns would show dirty fingerprints :lol_hitti

I took the GoPro's down yesterday and started editing last night and am finishing up today. I'm trapped home with the flu right now so it's a good project to have today. Below is one I have done already. There are over 3,300 pictures in each video to go though. Good grief. I set them to take a picture every 30 seconds and never really thought about how many pictures it would end up being !!

Seeing as how I was trapped at home today I decided to tackle a few small projects that have been on the list for a while. The first (and only actually) thing I did was troubleshoot and repair the Schlage lock on my little shop. This lock has been getting daily use for almost 7yrs as it used to be the front door lock on our previous house. When it would get unlocked and relocked it didn't always lock back up and that bothered me. I'd rather not leave all my tools accessible if I don't have to. If the locked door doesn't stop someone from coming the double door knob setup just might :lol_hitti
46771603061_f7d7629d94_z.jpg

I wonder what is in there !!!
46771602991_c9571a59cb_z.jpg

Wow talk about simple. The little solenoid in the top left corner pushed down the gray plastic piece that puts pressure on the pin my little screwdriver is pointing at.
46771603011_d24a884c13_z.jpg

It seems the pin had gotten sticky and needed some lube. A little dielectric grease and it works like new again. I fixed something and learned something today. It was a good day ... aside from having the stomach flu and having to carry a bucket around all day that is

JBL: that video you put together almost made me dizzy. wow that looks like it was a lot of work.

i've never felt safe with a computer lock on my door, but it's probably as good as a key lock if it's working correctly. nice fix!!

sorry you've got the flu and maybe you are just missing your old chicken buddies (or not) or maybe you got some Sh*% on your hot dog (or not). anyway hope you GET WELL SOON so you can play (WORK HARD) on you farm and job which i'm guessing keeps the lights on and the property taxes paid.

cheers

sorry you've got the flu and maybe you are just missing your old chicken buddies (or not) or maybe you got some Sh*% on your hot dog (or not). anyway hope you GET WELL SOON so you can play (WORK HARD) on your farm and job which i'm guessing keeps the lights on and the property taxes paid.

cheers
The video was a lot of fun but was a lot more work than I thought it would be.

For some reason I have to have my doors all locked when I'm not around but the keys are always in everything with a motor and that doesn't bother me in the least :dunno:

Nope. Don't really miss the chickens. They're ok but it's nice to have a break from them. The flu comes and goes like most other things. Kind of a PITA when it's here but it's gone now. I don't like being cooped up in the house while I'm sick and when I go outside to do stuff and tell myself I'll "Take it easy" that never goes well and I end up worse off.

Where can I buy one of those bratwurst extrusion machines? And do they come with a turbo? :lol_hitti

Jay
Amazon actually sells them !!! You then need to secure a piece of 1-1/2" SS milk line (I know a guy that can hook you up with some) and you're all set !!! While they were cooking we were trying to figure out a way to automate the turning of the pipe while they were cooking. We came up with a few ideas that may make it into the testing phase sometime :lol_hitti

We've resolved to do a date night each time the chicken barn is empty and the first of them was going to a MN Wild hockey game. My lovely wife is a HUGE MN Wild fan so we went to a game last night at the eXcel Energy Center !!!!

I must admit that I do not follow sports very much ... or really at all ... I'm not clueless about how the games are played and all that but I really don't get into it. The Mrs. is the complete opposite. When she starts reciting stats from players and games from years back I start telling her which variety of corn/beans we planted in what field 5yrs ago :bounce:

We got corner area seats with a great view. They lost to the Ducks but it was still a lot of fun. It is truly amazing the feeling of all the energy in the stadium when everyone is chanting at the same time. The entire place just shakes.

Drives: If you've ever worked cattle it is just about impossible to avoid getting manure splashed in your mouth, real fresh manure. I don't think it ever made me sick but it has to help with the immune system.

As I was watching the video the dog at my feet started passing gas...

JBL: yep you NEED THOSE DATE NIGHTS to keep your bride and you smiling and to let you know why you are working so hard. looks like fun.

Andy: YUCK is all I can say and even though i'm basically a city boy I did go to my uncle's dairy farm and help out on weekends quite a bit when i was able to cause his 200 acre farm was only an hour's drive. my aunt ALWAYS fed us well and can't say i'd want to recall all the manure that might have hit my face or that i smelled. I think he used to spray that mix on his fields that he mostly grew hay on and when we went swimming in the river we'd usually step barefoot in a cow pie that looked hard but wasn't.

Honestly I'd take a splash in the face/mouth of some nice fresh stuff over getting a boot pooped in any day. It was more common than it should have been back when we still had the dairy to be getting the cows up to go to the parlor and have one of them back into you and decide to poop on you and it almost always ran down into your boot. That stinks :lol_hitti

I have fond memories growing up and running through the pasture barefooted. My cousins and I would bet each other dumb stuff like the first to climb the tree house when we got out there and who had to feed more calves about weather the cow pie was "fresh baked" or "sun baked". We'd wash up in the creek on the way home. Boy oh boy those were fun and simple times

Never looked at it that way before. I've been trying really hard the last while to do more things just the Mrs and I and I gotta say it's been enjoyable. Everyone says you have to make time for yourselves and not work all the time and I'm trying to put that into practice. It's hard to do when there is so much to do though !!!

Had to laugh, just clicked on a video link from a thread on this site and what popped up, but an add for The Poultry Hawk.... Dat you in it? :spit:
Haha. It might be but I doubt it. Most of them have Chad, the founder, in the videos. It's crazy how everything ties together on the ol' internet these days :lol_hitti

It's been a busy few days getting the chickens apartment ready for their arrival today but Dad managed to get our counter top varnished a few times. I think Mom actually did it but we'll give Dad credit as well

That large spot we filled in doesn't look nearly this noticable when you're not 3" from it but it still turned out okay I guess.

DRIVES here is another seams picture for you. They really seem to disappear once the stain and varnish are on together.

The counter top is going in a 1977 Chevy C60 School Bus that we've converted into a camper. We're trying to "class it up" a bit as my wife says. I am having fun doing the actual conversion. It's a great excuse to play with my woodworking toys :lol_hitti

I never thought about a Shuffle Board Table. That's a neat idea for a shop !!! If I can ever get my hands on some bowling alley flooring I'd jump on that stuff SO fast !!! I've seem some amazing shop tables made from that stuff. It's as hard as concrete and so much nicer looking.

Thank you !! Turns out we used a hickory oak stain last time as this espresso is WAY darker. I like it better but it definitely is not going to match the other one that is already in there. I hope to get it home in the next few days and will show the difference.

Can't believe it's going camping . . . I've been in a few campers with hardwood floors and butcher block counter tops before. They were all at RV shows with six figure price tags but they do exist. This is more the "budget luxury" model. It's no Prevost but it is paid for !! :lol_hitti
