The stacking slab has been empty enough to stack the rounds of soybean straw in for a while now so in they went to get them out of the elements.
49954225862_667b2c2af6_z.jpg

Plus the bales had to get moved anyway because I'm hopeful that a pile of rafters and lumber show up here this coming week :bounce:
49953942766_0327dda5c5_z.jpg

I found another use for the plastic insides of the totes we've been using for firewood. They make really nice bins for holding net wrap and baler twine in the steer barn !!!
49953942746_25b15196ac_z.jpg

Today Pops and I road tripped to RDO in Cassleton, ND to look at a John Deere 9420 they have on their lot. We're thinking of upgrading to a larger 4wd that will better pull the tile plow and has a few more ponies under the hood to pull some larger tillage tools. On the way back we got to sit on the interstate for 20 minutes going nowhere for no apparent reason. I have no idea why we were stopped but the best reason we came up with while waiting was that some delusional person was walking around with a cape trying to fight off the covid :lol_hitti
49953942806_b4632cc874_z.jpg

The last few days the corn has grown quite a bit. The old saying "knee high by the 4th of July" will more likely be waist high this year

Protesters might have had the road blocked. :lol_hitti
Nuff said ....

With 12 tires LOL

jbl........... to look at a John Deere 9420
Are you surprised we are looking at a Deere or wondering why we drive 3hrs one way to just look at a tractor ?? We drove it around a bit and took it for a bit of a road trip to put it through it's paces. It has a 24speed trans and Pops isn't nuts about that. We're going to continue the hunt for something with a PowerShift, lower hours and better paint.

It is supposed to hit close to 90F here tomorrow and I noticed the cold side of the AC lines was all chewed up and the insulation was in shambles. I know at least one member on here knows what those baseball bat looking sticks made from conduit, swimming noodles and duct tape were from :bounce:
49958207981_114174376d_z.jpg

Pool noodles should work well for insulation :lol_hitti

This green box has been around for 50yrs on the farm and has been used for everything from a cob corn wagon to dry fertilizer wagon and most recently I used it for steer feed storage when the cattle were still in the old dairy barns.
49958207986_3aa2288530_z.jpg

Dad purchased this Deere 1065A wagon a few years ago at an auction because it was a good deal. We had no idea what to do with it at the time but have found a use for it recently !!
49957710023_8a09b6bf05_z.jpg

It was a touch too long so we took it apart to shorten it.
49958489067_d621ac2a8d_z.jpg

Box off the old wagon ...
49958489962_71cc29b298_z.jpg

It fits great !! This thing will get transformed into a tiling support wagon in the coming months. It'll live on for quite a while longer yet.
49958489942_a0791c104c_z.jpg

Look at that neat little flying box with a camera on it :bounce:

The building site as of 5/31/2020.
49957710923_fa0ed869d5_b.jpg

This is the old building site and where we've been taking buildings down lately. It is more visible where the old cow yard used to be looking from above. Everywhere there is concrete used to be the old cattle yard.
49958490477_df26a7fb4e_b.jpg

The primary idea for the drone is to take crop scouting pictures. Not much to see right now in the corn fields as it's pretty short yet.
49958209166_bdff64709c_b.jpg

The closer greener field is my oats field. You can see the sandy/gravely spots really well from the air !!!

Its all good. Glad you can take road trips with your dad. I just commented cause I saw an ad for one that I figured you were talking about and it had triple tires at all 4 corners. More tires the merrier.

That one is in Kindred and we thought about swinging past on the way home but when I asked what it'd take to put some 710 duals on it instead I was told $30,000 and lost interest real soon. Triples are nice for large wide open areas but would be a nightmare around here on our narrow little roads :wtf:

Ah ha, that overhead view is the one Ive been waiting to see. It really puts the chicken barn size in perspective. Wow. And now I can see the mess of old sheds you are tearing down for the future house. The puzzle pieces are making more sense in my head now, thanks.

Oh, and Rollag was cancelled this year, so if you are looking for a threshing show on Labor day weekend, you'll have to come down to Mt. Pleasant Iowa.

What model drone did you pick up?? Been wanting a decent one for aerial photos (not as worried about video)
It's a baby blue DJI Spark. It's actually my sisters. She makes money with it somehow and I asked if I could borrow it to take daily shop pictures as it's going up. She agreed and I think I may have found other uses for it or might just need to buy my own. I see they have a Mini model that is suppose to have 30min of flight time !! For crop scouting that would really be nice.

Looking at the first picture with the chicken barn in it the shed closest to the old building site is 48'x112' and looks like a kids playhouse when in the same picture as the 60'x624' chicken barn :lol_hitti

When I was a kid in the 1960’s that dough would have bought us THREE row crop tractors for the farm. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

It seems like a little toy but does take nice pictures. I think it was in the $6-700 area with the remote and other goodies when she got it. They make a "Mini" model that I think I may pick up if this thing proves to be handy enough.

JBL: looks like you've found a new toy to take up some of your not so spare time now. WOW it does take great pictures and pretty nice that your sister trusts you with something that isn't cheap that might be earning it's keep.

I recall 1/2 cup showing of his drone pictures he was taking on his $60,000 drone his employer bought to take pictures of their towers. the pictures yours are taking are pretty nice too and looks like you flew past the learning curve and became a pro overnight or have you flown other ones?

the new (maybe a bit old) JD wagon looks like a perfect addition to the farm.

I really liked seeing your daughter teaching your other daughter how to do chores in the chicken's barn.

Part of the reason I do not own a drone yet is that I think it's just a toy. I think I can find ways to make money with it or at least add value to our operation. We shall see but I think I'm going to buy one sometime :)

$60,000 drone :wtf: Yikes !!! That must be quite the fancy flying camera box !!

The JD wagon is something silly like 50-60yrs old but is in great shape so we'll repurpose it again for something else.

I also like seeing the little people doing chores and such. It's good for them to see as much real world stuff as possible

I know guys who run businesses crop scouting with drones along with other agronomy activities. Also a couple who simply film and photograph their family farming operations. Just be careful and do your homework. The FAA has gotten involved and now legality has been complicated on the moneymaking stuff.

I'd be more after taking pictures from above with it of our own operation to add value to what we're already doing. The occasional "throw a case of beer my way" type of deal may happen for some aerial building site photos may happen though :lol_hitti

I don't know the rules but I know my little sis does so I'll have to pick her brain some more before buying one. Or I just keep using hers, either way

you'll be fine in the open farm country. part 107 technically would apply if you're taking beer but the risk is so low.

We got about a half inch of rain and no nasty stuff other than some wind and lightening. North and South of us they got smacked pretty good :(

I was a few hours North of home yesterday and it was pretty ugly for a while. As in we stopped working and app went into the center of the parlor kind of ugly. Lots of crazy wind and some wicked lightening. One struck so close it was blinding and my hair stood up :wtf:

Many decades ago I took meteorology

Great course and one of the things I remember is that you don't have to be hit by lightening to get killed by it.
The potential (before it is released) causes electrons to go thru your body to the top of your head. (That may explain why your hair was standing up.) When the lighten strikes the potential is released . . . causing it to rush back into the ground, which if you're close enough can cause problems.
Teacher illustrated much better than I'm explaining it.

They taught us in the military, if you felt like that, hit the ground and lay flat. As there was most likely going to be a close lightning strike!!

People hiking the front range west of Denver experience that frequently due to all the iron ore in the rock!!

DJI is the move. If only they were cheaper :lol_hitti
This is the only drone I've ever flown and it seems nice I guess. Good things always come at a price. There is NO WAY that thing has $700 worth of hardware in it though :lol_hitti

He's also right that they ride extremely rough
I think I'm going to purchase a set of Camso SKS753's for the skiddy sometime soon. I like to leave them in the shed for a year or so to harden so they last extra longer and such. Those tires look like they'll last a LONG time and yet will still have a decent amount of bite to them. We shall see once I set eyes on a set and make a decision.

Hmmmmmmm. It all happened so fast I do not know what happened first but I do know we all thought it was pretty wild after the fact !!1

I don't remember it all that well but my hair stood up and than not very much later BOOM went the lightening .... mite .... lol. I was doing some wiring on a live 24v DC low amperage circuit so I just thought I got a little too friendly with the Hot and Ground and that's what made my hair stand up :lol_hitti:lol_hitti

I was trying to figure out how to show a before pic of all the sheds/barns/silos that were here when we moved in and happened to remember about this website. This is pretty much how the sheds looked when we moved in. This aerial was taken in 1986 (damn good year if I do say so myself lol).
49971535163_792d4e8f0d_b.jpg

I attended a small field day put on by Golden Harvest today and we learned all kinds of things. First things first we started off by doing some scoring and ranking of various things with the corn in front of us. This is in a test plot on the farm that the guy I bought the tile plow with owns. He put in two test plots and Dad and I did one LARGE plot this year as well.
49972052426_8163238703_z.jpg

After that was finished we talked about how what we could do to improve the corn right now. What kind of fertilizer would best help the corn right now ??
AMS vs ESN vs MAP vs ATS vs a few others. Lots of things to think about !!
49972052416_44edae8ab8_z.jpg

This evening the top end of the little people squad was determined to "sweep EVERY kernel back to the steers DAD !!" so off they went :)

The shed removal continues .....

I think this is tote #8 or 9 that Dad will be running through his woodstove next winter. This should save on having to cut so much wood down this summer !! (oh look ... a new yellow cutting device)

Nice flexvolt circ saw.

"Corded power without a cord" is not an understatement. That thing is a beast !! It is quite heavy though but so is a corded saw. I really like the blade right layout. It keeps the sawdust from blowing back at me quite as much.

I did quite a bit of trimming on the many cedar and pine trees we have here and couldn't think of a better way to move the brush than this so away I went. There were 6 bunches like this :bounce:
49978078332_a948a808f5_z.jpg

The first two are relocated to the rock pile down in the meadow where they can decompose in peace.
49978078392_b3212330ac_z.jpg

Annnnnnnnnnnnnd the shed tear down continues. The East gable end tin has been removed and it's on to the South wall.
49978078397_abbcd0a496_z.jpg

I lifted the basket that came with the forklift up with the skiddy and that worked VERY well !!
49977296848_5570898df1_z.jpg

The shed has "a bit" off a sag to it :lol_hitti
49977816201_79a4eed27c_z.jpg

OOOOOOOOOO Now we're making real progress !! The roof is open !!!

JBL: You mentioned needing more horses to pull the tile plow....might look at getting a tune on the tractor. Saw where a couple of the guys on the tube got tunes on tractors and sprayers and it made a difference....Worth a call at least.
We had plans to boost up the 7810 and 7630 a few years back and it didn't happen for some reason or another. With the STX325 it's more about weight than it is about raw horsepower. It'd be nice to have more horsepower to pull larger tillage tools and the tile plow would for sure benefit as well. I don't think I want to mess with the 8.9l in that STX though. It's not far from the top end of where it's happy already so boosting it up more may not be the best idea ...... or so we were told when we asked a while back.

A few days back Dad picked up the new auger for the combine grain tank. It is pretty wild how worn down the other one is when there is a new one sitting next to it !!!

Interesting how buildings that were once very functional have become obsolete because of the size of today's equipment.

Might the drone be of value in your tile business? Drone footage after a 4.5 inch rain should help extend length of runs and show spots not so bad to be. Yeah, can you say replant.

These buildings have the misfortune of being in the wrong place .... plus they are mostly rotten and are beginning to fall apart on their own. The one that is coming down now is quite rotten and has dropped a few support beams from the roof. It's time it comes down anyway.

I think a drone will help identify wet spots and such. It'll be nice to take a aerial photo once the project is complete so we have a visual reference as to where it all is.

14' x 50' door is plenty we will never need anything bigger.

2 years later: buys a 52' header and adds extensions onto the grain tank. :headscrat

I was recently in a farm shop that has 20'x56' one piece hydraulic doors and they said they should have went larger looking back. I cannot imagine why but that just shows it'll never be large enough I guess :dunno:

That shop is 150' x 300' with the center 80' having a 26' ceiling height :wtf:

sometimes you wanna pull your 780's with 60' headers on them in side by side? it's an arms race. our parents can talk about how good it was to have 70hp, duals and a cab. Now 650hp isn't enough for the 80' drills in the plains. they're looking at 1000hp. which means then 100' drills. then it's 1200hp. etc etc etc.

but if we wanna drool:
I like this shop layout.

but in the pit i'd absolutely do a platform lift.

Gonna have to fire up the ol' tractor factory in Havre, MT again to get over that 1,000hp barrier :bounce:

Those Larson folks sure have a nice setup. Watch their "equipment tour" videos for a few laughs. The Dad isn't having it and throws a few good one liners in once in a while.

That lifting service platform in the pit is a really neat deal .....

bigger buds is a catchy label for a tractor. twin N14s would be nice. :shocking:

I dont think people really understand "dad farmer from MN snark". between larson and zac the millennial my youtube is full of it. its a weird blend of dad jokes, disappointment, an accent and 43% sarcasm.
