you survive the big cold blow?
So far so good. It wasn't all that bad. A little below 0F for a few mornings and it's back up into the teens again. Sure beats the winter we had a few years ago when I left a bottle of Fireball Whiskey outside and it froze solid !!!

Just wanted to say Merry Christmas to all those out on Quaker road.
Hey thanks :)

We had a very quiet Christmas this year. We went to my parents for Christmas and that was it. We figured since Dad and I see each other every day (and my Sister lives at home) we're all connected anyway so no harm no foul. It was nice to let the kiddos play somewhere else for a change and we all had a good time :bounce:

Merry Xmas all, and a prosperous New Year.
Same to you !!!

We spent Christmas Day in the shop "doing stuff". Mostly the littles tried filling up the shop floor with chalk murals and played with Missy the shop cat all day. Pops and I got some shelving put up and are finally starting to have the ability to organize things !!

Haven’t had a chance to catch up with all I missed but looks like you are still moving forward every day even if only a little.

Merry Christmas
I've missed you in here Mr. Drives, thank you for stopping by !!!

Two steps forward and one step back is still progress !!!

I thought it appropriate to post pictures of the tread on the skiddy tires :lol_hitti

The rear two look like this and are "almost" smooth ......
50770877996_5a8d5529c9_b.jpg

And the front two look like this. These two have a little tread left yet and I'll be keeping one for a spare. Actually they will all probably sit around for a while until we make another tire disposal run. If anyone needs a couple one time use fire rings I know where you could get a few ............
50770993477_10a3d54101_b.jpg

I think the "big snowstorm" that hit us a few days back only dumped a couple inches but it all seemed to stick in the most inconvenient places. Like in the run yard for the steers South of the barn.
50770131668_fc9ea712eb_b.jpg

Those are some tasty looking steaks
50770878096_bc91beb873_b.jpg

Pops and I went shopping at the Home Depot and he ended up rummaging around in the scrap bin to find some lumber for a work bench. There were a number of really nice 2x4's in there !!!
50770877551_07b18ffbae_b.jpg

When we got back from town we decided to put some more shelving up. We got a bunch of double shelf vertical rails so Pops is cutting them in two so we can have more single unit freestanding shelving. We turned the exhaust fan on and you could barely smell the stink of the grinder :bounce:
50770131128_a33c5ffa67_b.jpg

I nipped the remaining unused conduits off that we didn't use and decided to plug them so the little fingers around the shop don't fill them with stuff .....
50770877646_312764072c_b.jpg

The girls drew stuff on the floor for hours on Christmas Day while wearing the new ear protection that Santa brought them.
50770130918_1e5c519115_b.jpg

Little Man was obsessed with "clamping things Dad!!" while wearing his new dinosaur ear protection. "The dinosaur's protect my ears from the noises Dad" Yup :rocker:
50770131773_9bf8711301_b.jpg

Pops and I got the walls in the shop office insulated and started putting paneling up ....
50770993412_72d2b1bfb0_b.jpg

The camera in this phone freaks out when there are multiple light sources in the picture and doesn't do a great job but you get the idea. Cheap $20/sheet stuff from Home Depot that actually doesn't look too bad :dunno:

That lazy shop cat is taking a nap in a box of 6-3/4" screws. That can't be comfy !!!
50772130088_0196554889_b.jpg

The laser we use to do elevations while tiling is coming in handy to level the false ceiling in the shop office !! Sh-office .... shoffice .... I think henceforth it'll be the "shoffice" :dunno:
50772877421_7aa7865d9d_b.jpg

Ceiling gridwork is up and we started to hang the cabinets. The cherry picker sure came in handy for this heavy SOB !!

Countertop will go in tonight or tomorrow sometime. Other than the WHITE outlets and plates I don't think it looks too bad so far :bounce:.

I really like the paneling you're using in the shoffice. Dark enough to always be "clean" but not too dark.

Don't feel too bad cause I think all of us have FSD (flat surface disorder) where we set things on anything that is level (floor, shelves, bench tops, car hoods, ...).

Here's to a great 2021 and I'll try to follow along cause while you say 2 steps forward and one back your steps must be giant size cause you've done well.

cheers

I thought about a lot of different wall coverings but decided to cheap out and put up some paneling. I am quite happy with how it turned out !! There were a few other patterns but this seemed to be the least obnoxious while not looking like paneling.

I didn't know it had a name so I guess I can officially add FSD to the list of things to say when someone asks "what's wrong with you?!?!" :lol_hitti

Some days it seems like it's all steps back but on average it all works out

That looks like it could be the makings of a tricky picture to put on a puzzle .....
50794998701_62a2e754ed_b.jpg

Hey guys !!! You look like you could use some fresh bedding :D
50795120052_45537af62f_b.jpg

Here it comes !!!
50794248148_d8e6a10d0b_b.jpg

The kiddos are really getting a lot of use out of their new ear protection. Even when it's mildly unnecessary :lol_hitti
50794248053_be808e6337_b.jpg

Cabinets are all installed and secured, fridge is in the shoffice, ceiling and lights are installed, tables are put together and kind of leveled, coffee pot and microwave are where they'll be for a while and Miss Lily is as excited as I am to start using this as a shoffice finally !!!
50794998651_473a807511_b.jpg

The next shoffice project will be putting some wires in those pipes !! The 1" goes towards my desk area, the 3/4" pipes go to the NW and NE corners of the upstairs room for surround sound speakers and the 3x1-1/4" pipes go into the utility room. One will make a run to the pump house to bring wired internet in as well as a few wires to power the devices in there so I don't need to have as much equipment in the pump house anymore.

Steers are all fed and seem happy

Work in the "new" shop!
I'm very happy to see the kiddos get introduced to PPE at a young age.
That is one cool shoffice!
Miss Alyssa doesn't like loud noises so it was a good gift idea for Christmas :D

I'd like to have them out here as much as they want to be so I'll do whatever it takes to get them out of the house and in the shop. Lots to learn out here and WAY more space in here than in the house :)

Fish tape through a piece of corrugated tile wasn't all that fun !!!

But having a camera in the pump house to see the fish tape come out the other end was handy :bounce:

Another week of distance learning with the littles. This time we're doing it in the shoffice where it's a balmy 68F :bounce:

The four basic food groups are all represented in this picture. Beer, Coffee, French Fries and Pizza :lol_hitti

Time for "Art Class". Miss Alyssa drew "the Shop". A recess break is a fantastic for them and for Dad. Good grief I'm not cut out for this home schooling stuff !!

I am sooo happy to convert my home office into home office/college campus for Granddaughter. No way I'm cut out to be a premed professor ... I've been known to use super glue for a bandaid LOL Enjoy your time with the littles, this is a great time, their minds are like sponges, you think they are not paying attention and they are soaking it all in.

when the kids are that age I bet they'd learn a language (Spanish, French, Russian, Chinese, ...) in no time so maybe pick up some Rosetta stones or some other type of teaching method and let them learn a language to take a bit off your teaching time. also never know when they might help if you hire some workers that don't speak English, but they are great workers and people to have around. AND when they need to take a foreign language to graduate they'll have it already. good luck with all that and looks like you are doing great.

did you find a cure for FSD (flat surface disease) or is your STUFF in a pile somewhere cause your shopoffice counters look empty?

I'm not a fan of working outside in the 40's and rain at all and not sure how you guys get up and work at below 0 with snow outside so you must love what you do.

keep up the great work.

Premed !!! I can't even master 2nd Grade math !! I'm not sure how they changed math but it's all different than what I remember it to be. They both are having as good a time as they can in the shoffice and are still to young to really know why this isn't ideal.

They go back to school Monday and hopefully the term "distance learning" is one that will fade into our memories ......

The littles have basic Spanish language instruction in school already. I found it quite helpful to have had that education because I went on to take Spanish in college and lived in Spain for a while. Fun stuff !!

Now that I know FSD is a thing I have accepted that there is no real cure for it. I did however get it to subside a bit by relocating all the stuff to other flat places lol. Some behind cabinet doors and some in drawers but all were ultimately flat places

Today is the last day of distance learning for us for a while and we can't be more excited !! The shoffice is looking a little worn but has been a fantastic place to homeschool in. All it needs now is hot water. I got the sink drain hooked up so the bucket under the sink won't overflow when we forget about it anymore
50813291923_9517d86cc3_b.jpg

The "clock your screws" guys will love, and hate, this picture. When you see it you'll know ......
50813417788_094a0f0a16_b.jpg

The beginnings of hot water in the shop are underway !! This is a water heater from Home Depot. Apparently I am not allowed into Menards anymore because I decided to be "that guy" and test their "gotta wear a mask or you can't give us your money" policy .....
50814033036_7cd1256609_b.jpg

I really, really REALLY like this floor sweeper but it looks like a desert sand storm went through the shop after using it. Karcher makes one with a filter on it that is suppose to be quite nice but carries a $700 price tag. Gross. So I decided to improvise. A small investment of a 1" PVC male adapter was something I was willing to make to prototype my idea .......
50814033381_a7da93f7d6_b.jpg

Er'ma'garwsh this works INCREDIBLY well !!! The idea in my head was to create a Rainbow vacuum on top off my floor sweeper and although that didn't quite happen (yet, using water as a filter will be in Version 2.0) this works very well. I swept the entire floor and you couldn't tell anything happened. I think there was 10lbs of fine dust in the shop vac though but that is better than in the air !!!
50814033276_a452f8fccb_b.jpg

This week in the shop has made it clear that the deep freeze belongs in here. It got chilly walking to the skid loader shed to get food when we got hungry. We defrosted it as it had been 3ish years since that happened so it should run happier now as well !!!

JBL: glad to hear you are getting everything all plumbed up nicely. yep that's a lot of pudding and OMG it's not clocked.

we have been buying flour from a smallish company in MINN E SODA that specializes in "old school milling" and after using it for more than a few months my bride's arthritis has almost disappeared. i'll get the name of that company if you are interested off one of the many bags we buy. we don't buy excess cause it doesn't have preservatives so won't last long and it's a bit spendier but we hardly every go to the Dr. so spending more on quality food seems to help.

looks like hiding your FSD is about our only chance. good luck with that.

cheers and stay warm.

It's January in Minnesnowta, why do you need a deep freeze :)
In Minnesnowta it could be -25F one day and 40F the next !! The meat will get all confused if you leave it outside

Drives thanks for stopping by again :)

All that's left for plumbing is to plumb the water heater and hot water lines. Pretty excited to be close to the end !!

My 5yr old organized the little coffee creamer deals and she was really upset that one of the labels was put on backwards !! It's right in the center of the picture and sticks out like a sore thumb once you see it

There are a few flour mills around us yet so yes, I'd be interested knowing which one you've been buying from. Maybe it was milled from wheat we sold there ???

Now that I know FSD is a thing I've really started to notice I've got a pretty advanced case of it :(

We've been letting the paper bin build up in the house for a while now and it's time to let the steers read it all. Maybe they'll learn something. There are a few "Beef" and "Progressive Cattleman" magazines in there :lol_hitti
50818850976_61b064e549_b.jpg

The chickens are leaving Monday morning at 3am and the NW corner of the barn is getting a little "muddy" so I put down some fresh wood shavings. They start to slip and slide around and hurt themselves so a $3 bag of shavings or two here and there is money very well spent. They're happy and that makes me happy !! They don't like going on it at first but once one or two venture out on the new shavings it's like a mad rush to check it out. It's pretty funny to watch.
50818111518_7c58bcb7a8_b.jpg

I'm not sure why but I've been taking pictures and putting them in a "make into Puzzle" folder on my computer. My mother sets puzzles like it's her job and I'd be all ears if anyone knows somewhere that can turn a picture into a puzzle.

This is a really neat picture !!! Looks black and white except for a few of the little peoples things in the middle.

JBL: it's nice to do a puzzle with your bride or just to put a few pieces in each day for a couple minutes if that's all the time you have. nice idea on the taking your own pictures and sounds like it might work.

FSD is pretty bad here that is for certain, but i don't have nearly the flat spaces to fill like you do so best of luck with that. i've heard it never is cured and most of us have one of the TO DO's on our list when we pass on to the golden garage.

here's the flour and oatmeal we buy. one of your clients? my bride has all the facts and apparently they mill the flour "old school" way and it's help her arthritis a lot.

we probably eat one of these oatmeals every other day and the other days some sort of eggs with pancakes or potatoes.

hope it's not too cold back in MINNIE SNOWDA.

cheers

Looks like your having the same fog we've been having in NW Iowa.
It's been a foggy couple of days !! Today was the first day in a few that everything wasn't all "fuzzy" outside all day.

Mama Bear does one stroke glass painting as a crafty hobby and is very very good at it !! I do not personally have the patience for puzzle setting but my Mother has been a puzzle setter as long as I can remember. She sets monster puzzles with thousands of pieces. I think she has one with 10,000 pieces in it :willy_nil

If you need more flat spaces build up !!! Shelving makes filling flat spaces much easier :lol_hitti

I don't think we've ever sold to that mill but some of our wheat may have ended up there at one point or another :dunno:

It's been surprisingly mild here lately. Not too much below 15F so that's been nice for once !! Winter has a way of averaging itself out so I have a feeling we're in for it sooner or later with a major cold spell !!!

Time to spend some time in the room above the shoffice/bathroom area in the shop. The intent for this room is for it to be a "living room" for the kiddos. TV, futon, Lego table and board games and such. A general hang out place or somewhere to get out of the house if needed.

I insulated it to keep some of the shop noise out. Well that and it'll probably be a little warmer up there than in the shop so the insulation will be nice for that too.
50823562311_f31bb4a8b7_b.jpg

I had intended on putting a nice sanded 1/2" plywood on the walls but almost died when I saw the price at Home Depot so I decided to give this 1/8" hardboard a shot. It was $6.99/sheet so I'm not out much if I have to double it up !!
50822816758_0940e524d5_b.jpg

I put a new blade in my saw and thought for a moment that someone in quality control at the Diablo blade place must have been asleep ..... than I realized what was wrong. It's a wonder that it cut as well as it did being in backwards :lol_hitti
50823562816_463eb817a4_b.jpg

A simple piece of bent rod makes for a really simple guide when cutting sheet material with a skill saw.
50823655602_73ebe8fcf0_b.jpg

I start the cut and attach the rod once I'm a little ways in and happy with how it's looking. After it's on it stays straight as an arrow !!!
50823655792_51028e6412_b.jpg

I don't think it looks too bad ?? It seems like it's durable enough as well. Mama Bear wants to paint it still and I need to put something in the 1' that is still uncovered.

JBL just received the same saw for Christmas. How do you like yours? I was disappointed the gauge was an extra to buy so I'll be stealing yours!
I like it a lot. The previous cordless circular saw I was using was the old blue Ryobi from way back when so this one is a huge step up. Paired with a 9ah battery it is hard to stall out.

I was recently gifted a 60v DeWalt circular saw ..... no comparison power wise but the Ryobi is a blade left and the DeWalt is a blade right so I still grab the Ryobi for most things.

I have the same saw which I also upgraded form the small old blue version. This one is such an improvement. Seems Ryobi takes a beating on here but I've been very happy overall. They don't 'feel' like a real tool but the performance is good.

I've also made the backwards blade mistake numerous times. I think it is something about the blade left with the print on the blade on the opposite side that makes you want to put it on backwards.

That hardboard is decent stuff but it can be a bear to paint. The shiny side is tough to get an even finish and the "rough side" is a sponge. Still a good product for the money.

I know you and I would call it good with hardyboard shiny side showing, but our brides have the say. if she really wants to paint might I suggest hitting it with a sander sort of like prepping your metal projects?

I love my Ryobi 18v tools and even though I hear Milwaukee might be better I have their plug in stuff and too many Ryobi (blue and yellow) tools to toss especially since their batteries are great now. I LOVE THE RYOBI 18v chainsaw cause with a sharp blade you can cut down trees with that little guy.

I love the vise grip bent piece of metal guide to give your Ryobi 18v skill saw a track saw feel. i've burnt out a couple of the Ryobi 18v skill saws, but my own fault cause I was trying to cut 1.250 plywood or thick lumber too quick.

I'm having to replace my 6 month old gas hot water tank and wondering if you know much about dielectric unions since you are a farmer and they KNOW A BIT ABOUT EVERYTHING (even FSD)?

if you have time to make a post on my DIY thread (link below in my sig line) please do cause i'm scratching my head and I already don't have any hair on top.

cheers

I love hardboard. The only caveat with it is bare, it will swell and never recover if it gets wet for any length of time. That is a nice sho-office you have there!

It seems that on here Ryobi is the black sheep of the family that is made to sit in the corner. All tools have their limits and should be used accordingly. Even DeWalt/Milwaukee or whatever your "better" flavor of tool is can't stand up to some peoples misuse. I have yet to actually damage a Ryobi tool to the point that it was no longer functional and I think I use stuff pretty hard ....

Thanks for the info guys!
One of the top things I like about this site is just that, sharing of info !! Sometimes too much sharing but it's all good :bounce:

I think it's turning out nicely and we may leave it brown but that'll be up to Mama Bear :dunno:

Mama bear will be the decider of colors upstairs. I care, but just do not care, what color it all ends up.

I purchased an 18v Brushless chainsaw for my Mother a year or two back and it was here more than at their place so I bought another to keep here. Both saws have ran through dozens and dozens of batteries and are no worse for the wear. I've worn two chains out with mine and it's still going strong. "Worn" to me is dulled, sharpened properly, dulled, sharpened properly and so on until there isn't anything left to sharpen anymore. They last a long time when sharpened properly !!

The bent rod is as "poor mans" track saw as it gets lol. It works so it was a success I guess. Simple is the name of the game. Well, simple and cheap :lol_hitti

Dielectric unions eh' ? It's important to use them when going from copper to steel/iron pipe so you don't get goofy corrosion and such. Sweat them on and thread them in. They sometimes need a little more heat than a regular copper fitting but it's not a huge deal. I haven't done many by any means and am probably not the expert you want to listen to. I can get by with plumbing but I won't do it for other people.

It seems nice so far. I don't think the chances of it getting wet will be great enough to warrant concern where it will be but I could see water making it all sorts of dumb. It's sawdust glued together so moisture is sure to turn it into mush :lol_hitti

A few items came in the mail the other day. Another LARGE First Aid cabinet to go with the other LARGE cabinet I bought a few weeks back. We had some FSA/HSA money in our account and needed to spend it on something medical related and I thought this was a good idea. One for the new shop and one to go in Dad's shop by his place.

Something else came a few days back as well. It came with a gift receipt.

Thank you ABSTIFFGS for the thoughtful bathroom decor

Miss Alyssa's Kindergarten class has a "Downhill with Dad" event last week and we had a blast. Usually they do "Doughnuts with Dad" but we all decided that being outside sledding with the kids was way better than being in the school wearing face coverings and not being to properly socialize.

We had a nice mini pizza snack when we were all tuckered out. Boy ... I am out of shape !! After 4-5 times back up that hill I was about done for. Alyssa kept right on going though. I think we went down the hill 25-30 times and were soaked and soggy when the day was over. Tons of fun :)

We got some more paneling up over the weekend and put some blocking where I thought a TV may go.

This tin used to be on the old hay shed we tore down last summer. The plan is to put it on this wall and use it as a boarder around the entire room to fill in the space the hardboard didn't get to.

JBL: good to know you feel the same as I do about plumbing. i'll do my best to keep ours in great shape, but i'm only available for advice to friends cause it seems like as much as you try to do it perfect there are way too many variables including faulty parts you or the person bought thinking they were the best made.

I'm not sure if you are able to just do an HSA, but since we rarely if ever go to the Dr. we invest our HSA funds. I think at one time we had FSA until my wife's company transferred to HSA and we benefit from not getting sick each year.

looks like you and the kiddos are having fun in the snow while things are getting better inside.

cheers

"Downhill with Dad" what a neat event that you and Miss Alyssa were able to do together.
I have a lot of respect for the time you invest with your kids.
Thanks for sharing.
