Good grief I need to take some better pictures of the house ........
51686193085_0aabc8e12b_o.jpg

Painter guys truck is here. The rain gutters also got installed one morning. Two guys in literally 1hr did the entire house. Very impressed !!
51686200830_3fe6ac2496_o.jpg

Two runs in the back of the house to finish it off.
51684513127_75f45b8e9f_o.jpg

Looks like I put the drain tile runs in the correct spots
51685299516_b0bbb6f98e_o.jpg

Interior shot of the bones of the house before the sheetrock went on. The blue tube on the left goes behind the TV area on the main floor, the center grey pipes go to each surround sound speaker location, the center blue pipe goes somewhere (attic I think) and the right pipes goes back to the mech room/data rack. I will cut open the sheet rock to expose this and put in a cobbled together wall mount rack to hold a patch panel. I'm debating on putting my surround sound receiver under the steps as well and just running an IR extender deal out under the TV. I have a Mac Mini that'll mount behind the TV and that's all I seem to use so it may work out. No PS5 or anything like that on this TV. That stuff is all in the shop upstairs room now :lol2:
51686193120_1b5f2ea059_o.jpg

Back to work !! Om nom nom that Axial Flow beaut gobbles down corn !!
51685978599_05bb8cb07e_o.jpg

Last load of corn for the season going in !!
51685566198_5582712432_o.jpg

The soybean head is going to need some major attention this winter. Good thing we have a warm space to work on things now !! Gosh I am so grateful to have this shop to work on stuff !!!
51685291936_c323274f99_o.jpg

Some goober told me to land roll the corn stalks before chopping and baling them. I thought it was the dumbest thing I've ever heard .... until I did it. Wow this was nice to have all the rocks gone and be able to shave the stalks off 1" above the round !!! More on this later .....
51684505437_b2f92e6ccd_o.jpg

Hayshed is totally ready for mud :bounce:
51684505452_cc1cd19a73_o.jpg

$10,750 for the mud, bar and labor. Not bad for a 48x72 area and what ended up being 6" thick. Oh well, at least I don't have to worry about falling through :lol_hitti
51686198555_bb400b2018_o.jpg

1st truck is in and dumping :rocker:
51684510742_6e3b434a92_o.jpg

He backed in, drove out, then BACKED IN. The conveyor was in the ground a bit
51685984019_5f167573d7_o.jpg

T'was a sawed off little Hispanic dude running the conveyor truck. He kept hollering at the concrete crew in Spanish and they'd just laugh. I happen to be quite fluent in Spanish and he was actually yelling children's songs and no one was the wiser. I asked him why and he was impressed I knew what he was hollering :lol_hitti
51685984009_87ecff4b48_o.jpg

Look at it all lay down. Mmmmmmm ...............
51685572013_3085705363_o.jpg

Shifting gears a bit ......... Mama Bear and the little people squad helped load up some granite pavers to use around the new house. We committed to buying all they had for some reason. Works out to around 60ton of pavers :wtf:
51685566223_7879617001_o.jpg

The first 6,000lbs on their way to coming home. I think I'm going to make friends with someone with a pay loader and a dump truck. My back hurts again just looking at those pictures
51685291986_c0e4fd6612_o.jpg

They worked hard and though they earned a freezie when we got home

Wow that’s a lot of granite but more importantly a ton of work. Nice looking floor in the shed and I’m sure you’ll be very happy it’s 6 inches with all your big equipment and huge temp swings.

love the story about writing big checks gir equipment snd trying to curb the waste of your workers.

house looks great!!

Thanks for the explanation of the dry corn. Having dropped toast in my life, it makes perfect sense! Your house is coming along nicely and your hay shed floor will make you happy I’m sure.

60 ton of pavers??? :shocking:

Did you fall and hit your head this fall? Holy **** that will be a lot of work. Personally I'd have just gone concrete lol. But I'm sure it will look great when it's installed.

House is looking good too! When is the move in date?
Yeah .... it's a lot of pavers. We'll have a use for over half of them around the house and garage. Mama Bear wants to do a monster patio outside the kitchen/dining room as well as an eventual patio deal with a grain bin on it. We plan to put these pavers under the porch as well. They look nice and being granite they'll be around for the next tenants when they tear the house down and build something else in 100yrs :lol_hitti

We're hoping to move in before Christmas but are not sure yet. It's taking longer than I'd like but there's not much we can do about it. We're waiting on carpet now.

Mmmmmmmm.......concrete.......
Nothing quite like the smell of freshly poured concrete

It is a lot of granite and will only be roughly 60tons of work :lol_hitti

It seems normal to write checks for the expenses on the farm but everything with this house is just making my mind get all mushy. Not because I can't keep track of it all but more like I don't know where to put it. None of it is tax deductible so it is costing a lot more than the rest of the stuff on the farm. It's okay though ..... it's okay though ..... it's okay .....

Glad my explanation wasn't too crumby :lol_hitti

Jay and his crew of concrete banditos got the floor of the chicken barn stacking slab formed up during the same time they did the hay shed. I cannot believe how fast these guys move !!!
51696664994_98666f7c6d_o.jpg

They poured it the same day as the hay shed. 135yds poured in the same day. Good job guys !!!
51696876890_9864090b6d_o.jpg

A few days later they had the walls poured, Sturdy Wall brackets set and the apron poured. The chicken barn was empty during this time and I honestly didn't even see them out there working. I just walked over there one day and saw it was all done :lol_hitti
51696664969_5f8c896358_o.jpg

I am super stoked to have this to put poop in !! The mess made from hauling the chicken poop across the yard will be gone and nothing will be left on the ground to run away since the concrete connects to the concrete apron from the chicken barn. Feeling fairly high class with this concrete beauty
51696665019_237f4577e1_o.jpg

At some point in time Mama Bear stained all these planks. They will make up the ceiling in the porch. It should look pretty neat with them up there and the granite pavers down below.
51695195537_d0134bc636_o.jpg

Does that look like it's 11' deep ?? Not really but it is !!
51695990061_132513c4f1_o.jpg

I dug up to the house with Dug the mini-hoe and had to span the trench to dig right next to the house.
51696669269_f3b46ae0dc_o.jpg

I'm not sure if I posted a picture of that pipe before but that goes into the mechanical room in the house and the condensate lines from the in-floor boiler and forced air furnace drip into it. The thought is to try to keep all that acidic water out of the septic system. There is a mess of pipes so if the whole mess freezes it'll divert into the septic line without me ever knowing. Pops poked the duct tape plug and there was already a bunch of condensate in there !!
51695990021_bc3a2bf6e4_o.jpg

After filling the bottom of the hole with sand we dropped an 18"x8' pipe in the hole.
51696669249_13f81be8cb_o.jpg

The bottom half of a 55gal barrel will make a perfect lid for the pipe !!!
51695199612_5a7a204751_o.jpg

The pipe from the house runs into it slightly higher than the pipe that will run out to the ditch.
51695990066_6445c2aa2e_o.jpg

I highly doubt any water will ever make it's way into the pipe that goes to the ditch but it's there if it's needed.
51696876880_ecbbffb61b_o.jpg

This is the pipe mess that leads to the daylight drain. I thought about tearing it apart and cleaning it up after the plumbers did their thing but instead I'll just put a bunch of junk in that corner and I won't be able to see it. Anyone notice anything blatantly wrong ?? Hint - the floor is wet and yes it's all glued together ....
51696316263_f56e8921c5_o.jpg

The day after we did the daylight drain outside stuff Miss Alyssa was quite excited to help haul poop !!!!!

Dang... not sure where I'd start with that plumbing.... would be debating between ripping out and doing it right and being done with whoever did it or calling for the plumbing inspection(assuming they're is one) forcing them to do it better with the knowledge the inspector will be back

Really want to know how that P trap that I'm assuming is getting a drain line dumped into it was supposed to work without a standpipe on it...

At least that open T appears to have been a sanitary t and is installed in the correct direction

lol that P trap and open Y
Most of it ....

cold and hot water reversed?
In their defense they go to a washtub on the other side of that wall. So they're waiting to be tied into the supply, not waiting to be tied into a faucet. Nice catch though. Which reminds me ..... I gotta tell them they can come hook that **** up anytime :lol_hitti

The only, and I mean ONLY, inspections out here are electrical. I doubt the idea of a daylight drain is something a plumbing inspector would like anyway

The lack of standpipe is the big one for me. The Y is a cleanout and has been capped. The sanitary T that goes through the wall comes from the wash machine and washtub in the laundry/mud room and has been capped as well.

To decode what is going on there ..........
The 4" on the left going underground goes to daylight.
The 3" on the right going underground goes to the septic system.
The overly tall pipe on top of the 3" has been removed and capped.
The connection between the 4" and 3" is there so if/when things freeze up outside and the daylight no longer is open the water will go over to the septic line. Looking at it now the sanitary T above that 4-2 reducer should be installed upside down so the water will flow nicely. Oh well I guess at this point.
The T going through the wall catches the wash machine and laundry tub in the laundry/mud room and is directed to the daylight first. There is a P trap behind the wash machine and will be one under the sink.
The P trap now has a standpipe and has the boiler and furnace condensate dumping into it.

I drew this mess out on paper and the goobernutz plumbers put the 4" and 3" coming out of the floor WAY too close together for it not to be a least a little bit of a clusterf**k.

When I sent this picture to the "lead" plumber he called and apologized and said "This isn't an excuse but will sound like one. We had the two new guys there today doing that and taping the duct work." He then said I wouldn't be billed for their labor that day (yeah okay lol) and was onsite himself less than an hour later to put a stand pipe in and clean it up a bit. They're good guys and the new guy thing was legit. Two fresh hires from who knows where and it was literally their first week as plumbers. We drank the better part of a case of Busch Light and Mr. Plumber (company owner with 25 guys on staff) went on his way. All is well, just a bit of a mess and not much to look at. Sort of like me :lol_hitti

The little store and liquor shop near us has the top of a bin for a patio/picnic area and is nicely done. I'll grab a photo when I'm out today for your idea file...

A plant yard here in town has one with the walls as a sales counter/office area too.

Mama Bear has an idea file with more things in it than I'll ever have time and money for :lol_hitti

I don't know what we're going to do with it yet but we've seen lots of ideas and like some things about all of them. We'll see. Next year we hope to get most of the landscaping done. It should help that I plan to be unemployed before planting next spring so I'll have more time to focus on things around home !!!

I finally took some house pictures ......

Today my dirtwork guy Chris brought some nice Class 5. Yay Chris !!!
51701275748_5d7951a929_o.jpg

It's not what is going to stay in front of the house forever but it'll cut down on the mud next spring.
51701671549_18c33f6a48_o.jpg

I tamped all the stuff flat in front of the house. Hopefully it stays nice and hard now until we need to tear it out and put concrete down next year.
51701884195_f5bf9aa686_o.jpg

I hope to have a HUGE patio out of the patio door with a built in grill and some outdoor cooking stuff. At least that's the plan :lol_hitti
51701884115_010c3879fc_o.jpg

Jumping inside the patio door is the kitchen/dining/living room area.

Anyone else have a wife that does these sorts of things and then asks "Whatcha think of my handy work honey?" Well now there is no correct answer a husband can give. "It looks dumb" is not going to work. "I absolutely LOVE it !!!" is too suspicious. "That's what you spend the last two days working on" followed by "It looks nice" is not the right answer ..... ask me how I know :headshake
51700199547_880759daca_o.jpg

This is a "coffee bar" cabinet deal. I thought it would look hideous with that stupid rusty tin in it. Well. I sort of like it. As an added "well that's neat" this tin is about 10' from where it was on a shed for 60yrs before we tore the shed down. That I find neat.
51700995701_985d8f6d18_o.jpg

A few finishing touches need to be done to the master bathroom but I think this is my favorite thing in the whole house !!!
51701671589_21f6fa5e9e_o.jpg

The laundry/mud room is between the garage and kitchen area right where it belongs.
51701275688_97fac8f396_o.jpg

Mama Bear is inspecting the window trim ........... that came unpainted. Guess I know what we're doing this weekend
51701671519_2fb4b9dc79_o.jpg

My Jeep will live back there. Mildly excited for that :lol2:
51700199152_f8e8547643_o.jpg

Going upstairs. There are three rooms like this. Little people quarters they are. They'll do.
51701275693_e92b672dc6_o.jpg

Looking into the family room upstairs ....
51701671584_45b6dc5926_o.jpg

Looking at the kiddos rooms and their bathroom complex.
51701884170_ffcefa5274_o.jpg

Walking into their bathroom there is a double vanity ......
51700995236_aa11448955_o.jpg

With the toilet in it's own room on the left ......
51700995226_8cbf3e5383_o.jpg

And the shower in it's own room on the right ..... They can be pooping, brushing teeth and showering at the same time without bothering each other. It all got a little large for what I liked but should work well.

The house is looking great! The wall that your wife did needs to be scored after your moved in. "my opinion".
The wall kind of jumps out currently. I will say her layout looks right on the money, if those are tape lines that would of taken some effort. I'm looking forward to seeing you set up a new home for your Jeep.

I know it may seem like it’s taking a long time to get your home ready to move in but compared to the slow pace of most of the world these days you’re doing great. The more I see that huge piece of granite in the shower the more I’m amazed you put in in place prior or walls ever being built.

Chicken **** biz and new building looks like it’s going to be a good one.

I know it's probably getting close to MOVE IN TIME, but I know those last few things can take forever to get the permit to move so best of luck with that.

also wanted to wish you and your family (the LITTLES are not SO LITTLE ANYMORE) a very Merry Christmas and here's to a great 2022.

best of luck with the change over from part time (or full time for most of 9-5 er's) to full time FARMER this year!!

So we're moved in and I don't notice it anymore. All's well that ends well I guess :lol_hitti

We're finally in !! It's been a little over a week and just about everything about this house is better than the old one. The only thing the old one has going for it is I knew were all the light switches were and where all the **** in the kitchen was. With all these huge kitchen cabinets I have no idea where anything is again. My 10" cast iron pan and SS spatula live on the stove. Everything else can be found easily enough :dunno:

The big attached garage is a great staging/work area during the house build. Looking good!
The big attached garage has been nice during the entire project for sure !! When we were first designing the house/garage the drafter guy said "Jeez, a 30x46 attached garage !?!? That is going to be AWESOME !!" and I guess I didn't react with the manly "DAMN RIGHT IT IS" fast enough for him. I said "we just build a 54x72 farm shop. The attached garage will likely never see a wrench turned in it :lol_hitti "

Also wanted to wish you and your family a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
Yikes ..... it's been over a month since I updated this thing .... sorry guys ....

I tried those out after I read them here and all I got was "The look". You all know the one .... when "The look" is photographed it always turns out with her smiling like the happiest person on earth. Not sure what sort of voodoo is getting thrown out in that moment but it's crazy stuff !!!

Mike, Happy Thanksgiving and I think the house is looking real nice, should be in soon. 🤞

Jay
We're in !!! Whoo Hoo !!!

Always make up before bedtime. Always. She may suffocate me in my sleep, I'd sure hate to be mad at her before I go to bed :eyecrazy:

Hey Mike, how‘s the house?
It's much warmer than the old one :lol2:

Hope things are all well with you folk.
Things are great out here. Busy, but all the big things are going well !!!

My permit to move was coming in after morning chores to Mama Bear disassembling our bed and seeing piles of stuff in boxes in the kitchen. "It's happening today" was all the permit I needed I guess !!!

The littles are not so little anymore indeed .... Merry Christmas to you to Drives !!!

My exit from full time will likely be around Feb 9th for reasons that cannot be shared out loud on GJ.

Mike I hope you and all your family have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
in your new house.

Jay
T'was a very Merry Christmas in the new house !! Planning a New Year's party of sorts in the shop if you want to stop in :)

Merry Christmas and have a joyous and Happy New Year.
You as well !! Thank you for stopping by !!

Wow that’s awesome that you have moved in. Looks like 2022 is off to a positive start early and I wish the best for you in your new career change.

cheers!!
Fully moved in and still not moved in all at the same time :lol_hitti

It's been an insanely busy last few months it seems and I've been neglecting y'all ..... All is well out here and I hope to have more office time in the coming weeks to update this thread again. It was/is not my intention to let it die.

April 1st is the official date I gave the off the farm job as to my last day of "full-time" employment and I have been trapped in a glass case of emotions lately about it. Truly excited to be able to focus on what I want to do around here, nervous (but not really worried) about having enough $$$$$ to grease the wheels, frustrated because there is not a great plan at work to keep the tasks alive that I alone have been doing, sick of Mama Bear telling me to "JUST QUIT AND BE DONE WITH IT", happy to know that I'll be able to spend more time with the family, sad that I will likely lose touch with friends I've made over the last 12yrs, and honestly, a bit worried that my ADHD and inability to start and not finish most things will drive me bonkers with no clear direction and schedule like I have at work. WOW. That is a loaded paragraph :eyecrazy:

Anyway ......

Thank you to a few members on here that have pestered me to update this thread again .... GJ has always provided a mental sanctuary and I need to spend more time on here to keep my mental health in check !!

Do you own the company you're quitting? that's not your problem after april 1. (hell of a date choice btw).

Best thing you can do is keep the structure going. its easy to ADD all over the place. get a good task list going and managed. then plan for double the time on all of them.

We decided to put garage doors in the hayshed finally !! When I built the shed in 2015 they were $14,000 and I just didn't have the extra $$$ to put them in at the time. I paid for 3 doors at 2015 pricing in December 2022 :wtf:

These guys have put 100% of the garage doors in at our place so far and they've been super awesome so far !!!

They sure do look nice

The high of the day when they were being installed was -15F. Two of them had insulated jeans and a pair of sweatshirts only. Either dumb or tough, or both. It got chilly that night. Past sweatshirt weather and almost approaching time to shut the windows in the house :lol_hitti

Mama Bear made me go to the damn doctors office the day after I last posted .... is it COVID ..... Walking Pneumonia ..... Strep Throat .... ear infection .... No says the test (yeah right), Yes, Yes, Yes .... Didn't kill me BUT I'm just starting to feel back at it again. Pretty sure I'm ready for spring !!!!

So. Yeah. I moved most of the IT stuff out of the old house right away but needed to time the move of the internet service when the chicken barn was empty so my alarm wouldn't be offline. It was always a mess because I knew "one day" I'd be cleaning it all up when we built a new house .....

Yeah. This rack is going to go away as well ....

Not as impressive as some racks I've seen on GJ but it's clean and mine !! Still have quite a bit to add but it's up and running in the mech room in the new house.

Do not own it but grew up in the middle of it ..... My BFF (awww) from K-College is one of the owners kids. We go camping with them and our kids are in school together now. So it is much closer to me than if I was working at literally any other place out there. I've spent thousands of hours doing IT work on farms in the Midwest and do not want to leave the customers hanging BUT it really is time to move on. There are a select few customers that I plan to respond to as I have developed relationships with them over the last decade but the majority will be at the mercy of a few guys that have helped me along the way.

I have a close farmer friend that has been going through some awful **** the last few months with the death of an employee (not on the job), a wife that has become an addict (she's getting help finally) and a few kids getting very sick lately (they're fine but it was scary for a few weeks) and it has opened my eyes up tremendously in so many ways. Somehow he is managing to stay positive and has kept the "it could always be worse" attitude. He and I are business partners in a few things that have led me to being able to quit my in-town job and our families have grown close because of it. Making the decision to quit working out so I can focus on family means more to me than it has ever meant before.

I told them the last Friday in March and the boss man laughed and asked "The last full week or April 1st". Seemed fitting that I quit on April Fools Day. I think I'm going to go in the following Monday and grab a job box off the shelf like nothing has changed :lol_hitti

I've already created a Google Calendar for "Farm" so I can schedule myself each day to stay on task to start. I have also been using the "Keep Notes" a lot more to keep track of things. Make lists of what needs to be done, should be done, and maybe one day will be done. It's already helped with a bit of my sanity just doing that.

It’s good to see your post and I’m glad all is well!
Thank you !!! Lovin' the username !! I'm neverdone around here either :lol_hitti

Nice update 👍

We'll see ya when the thaw starts and things settle a bit more before planting season.
Hopefully before then but who knows ....

nothing says you can't do consulting work back when they need it. its not like you're going to the moon.

I've heard good things about: https://todoist.com/pricing plus the price is right.
The consulting thing has been discussed already and I'm open to it.

That seems like a neat tool that I'll give a try !! Thanks for the link !!

Oh god, don't leave us hangin before planting season. I need my fix of planter/machine prep. ;)
John Deere planters just need to be hooked up to the tractor and filled with seed/fert. Not much to see there

Are you still doing the chicken thing?
Absolutely !! The way we do it it's not easy to jump in and out. I signed a 10yr contract with "the company" to grow chicken. The barn will also be paid for in 10yrs or so.

It's not a bad gig all things considered !!

You’ve been wearing a lot of hats for a while and I’m sure that won’t change much without your outside job.

Sorry to hear your friend and his family are going thru tough times but sounds like there is a positive light over there to hopefully get them thru it.

didn't you have covid twice? Glad to hear you’re feeling better but I’m betting you never stopped doing your chores while you were sick.

I know you’re a techy but I was sort of too and when I worked for myself I had spiral notebooks full of daily TO DO items that I could just check off or forward to the next week or month.

take care and yes don’t be a stranger and post something every week or as often as you can.
