You’ve been wearing a lot of hats for a while and I’m sure that won’t change much without your outside job.

Sorry to hear your friend and his family are going thru tough times but sounds like there is a positive light over there to hopefully get them thru it.

didn't you have covid twice? Glad to hear you’re feeling better but I’m betting you never stopped doing your chores while you were sick.

I know you’re a techy but I was sort of too and when I worked for myself I had spiral notebooks full of daily TO DO items that I could just check off or forward to the next week or month.

take care and yes don’t be a stranger and post something every week or as often as you can.
I struggle to sit still. I have told Mama Bear a few times that if I could work 24/7 I'd be the happiest guy on earth .... that being said, the occasional outing with her and or the kiddos really makes me smile. There is something about splitting a tractor in half to replace a clutch and then there is something totally different about going to the zoo with the kiddos. I don't plan to sit around but the focus to make money will have to make some sort of shift otherwise I'll just end up messing around in the shop and barns all day :lol_hitti

The friend and his family are doing as good as they can right now. I've gone over there a few times and done some maintenance on his robotic milkers a few times the last few months to hopefully ease some things but yeah, you don't really know what you have until you don't have it. I think I've been talking to him more than my wife the last few months ....

"Officially" had Covid twice but I tested negative the last time somehow. I had the brain fog something nasty for a few weeks but no other symptoms other than a nasty cold .... until it hurt to breath, and eat, and lay down and it felt like a polar bear was sitting on my chest. So, Mama Bear made me go in and get checked out. Literally drove me there lol. When the doctor said I had Walking Pneumonia, Strep Throat and an ear infection I said "Okay, makes sense. I feel ******. Tell CVS I'll be there soon so I can get back to work." "Go home and rest" she says .... Yeah right okay. I told her if you're not going to admit me I'm going to go to work. I work way less there than I would at home. Bossman told me to go home as well so I left and went to a jobsite and hung up a few cameras and did some long overdue software updates. Easy stuff.

I lose notebooks like it's my job so something digital is almost a must for me. It is satisfying to cross something out though .....

Whew lots going on. Stay well, don't sweat the small stuff and list to mama bear, she'll be right about 100% of the time!

I too am a list maker, used to use keep note, and have found a voice note pad app makes making list a lot quicker than typing!

Hey Mike, glad to see an update and to hear how things are going. Good to hear you are busy and things are good. I’ll bet you’re happy to be in the new house. Best wishes on the change of employment and I hope you feel back to 100% soon.

frustrated because there is not a great plan at work to keep the tasks alive that I alone have been doing
I resigned from a job in 1995 after 5 years of service. I gave them 90 days to transition my knowledge to other staff. They half a$$ed it and paid the price later. I did return as a 1 day a week consultant and did eventually rejoin the company.

It reinforces that you are a good guy - worrying about their customers - seemingly more than they are.

Cheers

Jim

PS: I also miss your farming storieds - so keep it coming.

Based on availability and soaring prices on fertilizer, your timing on the chicken business and litter storage (y)(y)

Like you, had a bout with double pneumonia, decided I better get some help when I was on a two lane state highway and there were two lanes of traffic coming at me o_O Called Mrs told her I was headed to hospital emergency, I'd be home later. She got there before I did, told Doc only way I would not work, knock me out. I have no idea what he gave me, but I have no memory of three days of my life.

We're happy to finally be in the new house. I stopped heating the old house about a week ago as well as we've FINALLY got all the freezeable stuff out. I'm pumped to be here full time doing my own thing finally !! I don't know what 100% feels like BUT I think I'm close to 75% of when I was 21yrs old :lol_hitti

My direct supervisor and I have loosely had April 1st on the calendar since Thanksgiving and he's given me the freedom to take whatever time I need to document stuff and create walkthroughs for the simple stuff. He's a super good dude and I both respect and admire him .... not something I do to just too many out there ... certainly not many individuals like him that are only 26yrs old !!!

Returning at a consultant when they find someone to "replace" me has been discussed and I'm open to it at this point .....

I also miss my farming stories .... I had a lengthy conversation today with a fellow farming buddy about the best way to setup a soybean header to combine soybeans. The co-worker riding with me just kept shaking his head and informed me I talked about the same exact thing for 55 minutes when we hung up. Silly city boy ..... we gotta talk it through that far to stay fresh in the off season !!!!

Knock me out or I'm going home. I like it and plan to use it in the future !! Glad it all worked out for you !!!

It was finally time to stop heating the old house and bring the furnace into the new one !!
51871734652_48915926e3_b.jpg

The HVAC guys bent up most of the plenum and return stuff before they left last fall so all I had to do was hook it all up for the most part. Some goober stubbed the intake/exhaust pipes such that they had to cross to go to the correct spot. *it'll be okay*
51873337160_e8128cfe00_b.jpg

At least I can make that look decent !!
51871734802_727caf4e85_b.jpg

I made them take the stupid air exchanger back and did this instead. That's a simple "U" with a flipper deal inside it so I can open/shut off the incoming air as needed. Easy peasy and there is still fresh air coming in the house ..... This summer I think I'm going to drop it vertical and disconnect the pipe that goes to the furnace. We'll see .... seems to be working well so far.
51871734282_a393164c7b_b.jpg

Nice clean wall to put a couple water-water heat exchangers on the wall when the outdoor wood boiler goes in this summer !! The water filter setup and all the water heater piping will get redone and pretty'd up. Crooked saggy **** drives me BONKERS !!!
51873016234_9e1cb8fa52_b.jpg

I gotta take more pictures ..... that's everything up until current !!

House is kick ***.
I have a question, has Miss Lily ever expressed what she wants to do when she grows up?
The knowledge of how things work and all the other projects she has been involved with should really help her in the future.
Leo is such a kick; I like the picture of him out of all the winter cloths, made me smile. I couldn't tell who was happier, Leo or the T-rex on his shirt.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank you !! Mama Bear wanted something "showy" and fancy with tons of exterior accents and I wanted a bigger house so we sort of compromised and this is how it turned out. I like it and more importantly, she likes it !!

Miss Lily wants to be a baker, or ballerina, or a teacher, or "whoever makes the schools covid rules so I can make them go away" but farmer is always in there. I would be the happiest dude on planet earth if my kids wanted to farm with me one day !!!

Lily is quite mechanical. She can take things apart and put them together and know how they work. Miss Alyssa on the other hand .... she's the artsy one lol. Not a lot of common sense in that one but she is crazy book smart !! Leo ... well he's still pretty little but he's really good at losing tools and breaking things right now. Gotta figure out how to channel that into something useful :lol_hitti

That is Leo's favorite shirt. When he outgrows it he's going to be sad. Dinosaurs are a big part of his little world right now !!!

Yes, little Leo reminded me of "Randy" on the movie "A Christmas Story"!
Hahahahaha I can see it

Leo is really getting big, seems a lot taller than recent photos.

Jay
No kidding !! He's 6'10" and 260lbs already !!! Or so it seems :willy_nil

Did Leo crawl in that cupboard by himself or did Dad lend a helping hand? Nice work on the furnace!!
Oh look .... Leo is in a cupboard :lol_hitti

He may have had help getting up there but the idea was his

Hey look !!! A wood stove on a trailer !!
51888493709_c3e576ee96_b.jpg

Ash cleanout on the bottom, "Multipass exhaust system" cleanout on top, 9yr old inside for size reference.
51888816135_4aa8e90eed_b.jpg

The four pipes on top have water running through them and the single pipe will have air blasting out of it when it's calling for heat. It's a bit of a cave in there !! A LOT larger than I was expecting.
51888161686_b5ab18636a_b.jpg

Good grief Dad I can do stretches in here !!!
51888494454_a37ed7d02e_b.jpg

Ash cleanout pan. I am very excited to get this thing installed and put to use next fall
51888162201_b39ace1fcb_b.jpg

I haven't purchased the pipe yet but looked at what the dealer had on hand and it's what I'll be using. It's encased in a 4-1/2" black water line and has two 1-1/4" lines inside it. The lines are in the middle of the pipe with closed cell foam around the whole works. 1 degree F loss in 100' supposedly.

You're going to love that! I knew a guy with one of those. He loaded it with a skidloader, once in the morning and once at night. It burned everything he put in it. Huge chunks of wood, as big as would fit through the door. Any type of wood worked for him, pine, hardwoods, softwoods, whatever.

Very excited to see the changes coming to your farm and home.

I'm excited for the stove as well !! I've been calling it my "wooden work out machine" lately. We cut a lot of fence lines each year and Dad doesn't go through all the wood in his stove so it sits and rots. This will be a way to utilize the work we're already doing .... at least that's the thought !!

The door is 24" x 24" so it'll handle a pretty large chunk !! Certainly larger than what I'll be able to lift into it.

This summer has a few goals over and above "just farming". We plan to landscape around the new house which in itself will keep me busy for a while. Mama Bear wants the grain bin gazebo functioning sometime but I think that will be towards the end of the list. We've got 50ton of granite pavers to get home before we can do the hardscape stuff around here. I found a really neat chair/table design on the ol' interwebs that has a single chain holding the weight of the chair up in the center and a chain in each corner to keep it stable. Not a new concept but I think an entire patio set would be pretty neat :)

Pops brought his snowblower over to see if my skiddy had more snort to run it than his does. Ummm .... Yeah .... I found my new favorite snow moving tool !!!
51888910896_74af440b80_b.jpg

We've been slowly working all the trailers through the shop to check wheel bearings and such and this one got a little out of hand .... it "had" a wooden deck on it as well. Pops put his foot through it in a few spots last fall and got mad at it so off it came.
51889244859_4bc5de081e_b.jpg

There were also a couple stringers that were completely rotten as well so the project gets bigger !!!
51889244704_1bee814251_b.jpg

The ol' ProMaster is in the shop to be emptied out. The head gaskets let loose and aparently with 150k on the clock it wasn't worth fixing. These things are complete garbage. I picked it up from the service center with the engine literally chained up :lol_hitti

I've heard stories about those Van's from multiple different people and yet I'm still surprised by how many I see on the road.

That wood boiler is certainly a unit! Will it heat the house and shop?

This is my 2nd ProMaster, the 1st was an EcoDiesel, and they are pretty nice units until something inevitably goes wrong or explodes. They're fairly quite inside and I like being able to walk in the back to get stuff. The radio works, bluetooth phone stuff works, horn works, ummmmm ..... yeah .... that's about all the nice stuff :lol_hitti

Since the wood boiler is going to be heating the shop I was able to "legally" purchase a non-gasser unit so yes, it'll be heating both the house and shop !! The 7400MP is "rated" to heat 8,000 - 10,000 square feet. House is 4,000ish with the garage and the shop is 3,456 so 7,500ish total. The 7300MP was rated at 4,000-6,000 square feet so I decided the extra money for the larger stove wasn't a bad idea. I'll be pushing water 240' to the house and 100' to the shop so the larger stove will give a larger reservoir as well.

Last months fill of LP came in just under 300gal for the house and shop. 300x$1.90 =:puke:

That's a great price on Propane, it is over $3.50 per gallon in Richmond, VA....
When the propane truck comes here he usually empties out a 4,000gal truck between the chicken barn, shop, skid loader shed and house. Must either be a "bulk rate" or it's less expensive here .... at least it was $1.90/gal last month when I sent in a check and part of a kidney.

I'm always jealous of how cheap American fuel prices are. Last I heard propane here was $3.25/gal. I'm unlucky enough to have a house with a oil furnace; the last fill up was almost $4.50/gal and with the increase in fuel prices here lately it is probably close to $5.50/gal now. :eyecrazy:

Well, 4000 gallon should certainly qualify for a discount!
I get an unknown percentage off because of the chicken barn. That monster goes through 350 gal/day when it's cold out and the chicks are little because the barn needs to be a balmy 92F :lol2:

I want to ask so many questions about Canada related things but will refrain due to a possible breach of sensitivity things in the user agreement for GJ :canadian:

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey !!!!!!!!!!! Shop tunes are FINALLY hooked up !!!!
51970172041_0dfb5cbbc3_b.jpg

This is my Poultry Hawk basket system. It assists in numerous aspects of daily chicken chores. One day it decided to be a four letter word that starts with the third letter of the alphabet that I'm not sure I can type on here because it didn't want to go around corners anymore .....
51970746620_a1dc98efb6_b.jpg

Seems the pins that the motor and wheels swivel on are all kinds of boogered up. Well now we just have to fix this !!!
51970236363_dfffc5c546_b.jpg

Put one of the pivot pins in that beaut of a Delta press and away we go !!!
51970236433_723143cfc7_b.jpg

I drilled a hold through the center and moved onto drilling a hold to intercept it so grease could come squirting out in two different places.
51970167451_9cbbef1771_b.jpg

Just like the pros I put the tap in my Ryobi drill and pulled the FULL SEND button to cut those threads :lol2:
51970457344_7899ff618e_b.jpg[

What a nice looking zerk that is :lol_hitti
51969166077_71957875aa_b.jpg

One side done and back together. Just got to remember to grease them each flock now :headscrat
51970236688_0f9895e040_b.jpg

This is a case of those "Gee I hate these things" sort of tools but they proved to be SUPER handy during this little project ....
51970457494_e5707820a0_b.jpg

We have a couple "pintle hitch" items around the farm and it's always a challenge to move them around. I decided to build a hitch deal to go into my mover deal for the skiddy to help that problem a bit.
51969172457_5941c0a66e_b.jpg

I cut up a few different things that had been laying around for a while to put this together .....
51970737880_3453ed1858_b.jpg

It's 99% welded together. Should hold up !!
51970464104_d288dbd82a_b.jpg

I couldn't resist :lol_hitti

House looks good! So since you've been in it for awhile, how do you like the layout?

Looking at your thread makes me think of all of my projects I have going on. I hardly post all of my projects cause my projects are scattered over a period of time due to cost of items and the short period of times I'm working on them each time I get to work on it. Kind of like 40 tabs open on the the computer and I'm not sure where the music is coming from.

Has the snow moved off from your area? If you miss it, I can send you our weather! LOL

The layout is working out well so far. I wish we'd have went 2' wider in the kitchen/living room area as things are a bit snug in the kitchen but they work well nonetheless.

It snowed yesterday a bit here, nothing crazy but snow. Dumb. 10yrs ago we had all our oats/wheat planted BEFORE April 1st. Not this year !! We haven't even awaken the tractors from their winter naps yet :lol_hitti

Another Happy Tool from out on Quaker Road.
Well because of that happy tool there are now two of us happy tools out here

F’n broke tool redesigned for the better by the user. We’ll done!!

I’m also curious how the new home and full time farming life is now?
Whoa there slugger with that foul language !!! Thank you though :)

New home has Mama Bear happy .... New home has Papa Bear going "why did I turn thermostat control over to Mama Bear?!?!?!"

"Full time farming life" begins tomorrow at 5:31 PM !!!!! April 1st, 2022 will be my last day with W-2 wages off the farm. Only just maybe a tiny bit excited for that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This may look like a nasty mess BUT it is the result of FINALLY installing the peroxide system in the well house. All the rusty goober comes out on the filter now instead of depositing on all of the showers and sinks.

We found a LARGE rock last fall with the tile plow and decided to see if it would move if we just more horsepower on the front of it ..... well .... seems that when a John Deere 9300, Deere 7r250 and a Deere 750 dozer are hooked on there and they all have solid footing things in the frame of the plow bend :Twitch:

New parts have been ordered and are yet to arrive. Little Man and I are cleaning it up a bit before getting to work on it !!!

Congrats on becoming a full time Farmer today!!

ever use dynamite to bust up big rocks instead of bending up your stuff? I’m guessing borrowing tools from the granite company to break up rocks might not be possible?

Have a great day and hope it warms up soon so you can get to planting your seed

Returning at a consultant when they find someone to "replace" me has been discussed and I'm open to it at this point .....

Mike, congratulations on your new 1099-NEC (Nonemployee Compensation) life. After I retired it was suggested I 'get a job' rather than watch QVC. Five fun years of consulting ended when they took away the fun. Saying "You have me confused with someone who needs this job" was so much better than "I quit!"

I can't tell you how much this simply reply means to me. I truly appreciate you following along and being interested in what we do on the farm !! If there is anything you'd like to see more of please let me know !!

I have a feeling "retirement" will be short lived. I gave them a number they can get me back for on my time on my schedule and was told "Nope, too much" so I hope they don't call but I did leave that door open.

Congrats on becoming a full time Farmer today!!

Full time 90+hrs a week on the farm instead of only 50+hrs a week :lol_hitti

The tile plow is built VERY well but didn't stand a chance behind the 800+hp and 100,000lbs pulling on the front of it. Most rocks move out of the way with that kind of force BUT this one was the size of a pickup and put up a fight !!! Grandpa used to talk about using dynamite on rocks but you need to "know people" now to get near the stuff. I'd love to play with some but I think I'd get into trouble with it .....

I also hope it warms up !!! This winter stuff in April is getting old. It snowed an inch here today

'grats on retirement.
Thank you !!!!

About 6 months ago some management changes were made and a well respected but "soft" supervisor was replaced with a current service team member that is a micro manager and a bit of a control freak. I truly do think the new supervisor will be a good thing in the long run but for now he's causing A LOT of un-needed drama. When he started to poke and prod about a few things I was not doing "his way" I got a bit buckey and told him that exact same thing. "You have me confused with someone who NEEDS this job". Yeah, that didn't go over well. T'was around harvest time last fall so I let it all go water under the bridge at the time. He kept sending little reminder emails about how to "properly" do my time cards and paperwork and I had enough of it. I was doing what they wanted and he kept finding things wrong. I had a honest conversation with him like men. Outside YELLING and nose to nose spitting and snorting while poking each others chests and scratching the dirt with our feet. Somehow we ended up at Dairy Queen and I bought him lunch. I told him I didn't "need" this job but I enjoyed it and I found a reason that will make leaving easier. We ate lunch, shook hands and poked fun at each other ever since. Sort of like a couple immature kids that finally got up the nerve to see what can be found using "Incognito" mode on a web browser ...... Today I shook his hand and said "See ya never" and he laughed and said "Good luck out there Mikey" Mikey. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. FU#& YOU !! Mikey ..... The joke is on him though. He was the highlighter king and I switched the internal wet stick things around in all of his highlighters today. That'll rear it's head sometime in the next week I'd imagine. I signed the insides of each of them so he knows it was me. Eat it !!!

Anyway .............. Thanks for stopping Bob !!!!!!

Overrated but helped get us where we are and for that I am grateful. Thank you for the best wishes !! Hopefully that means I can post on here more if I can find time

Congrats. on your new "Full Time Farmer" status.
Looking forward to all future updates.

Vince
I have a few big things planned for the summer so hopefully I remember to take pics !! 1500+sq/ft of granite pavers, a GIANT granite outdoor table on a patio, hooking up an outdoor boiler, pouring a couple yards of concrete (hopefully 100+ again), building a wood shed, enclosing the lean-to on the shop, leveling out for a possible future machine shed/steer barn/cattle handling facility ..... oh and all the farming stuff like planting corn and soybeans and such. I am ready !!!!
