First off Happy New Year (almost)
Does anyone know of a led floodlight that has a bracket on it so I can mount it on a 4x4 post
Haven’t looked anywhere yet
Just got the posts up yesterday

Consider mounting on wall under roof.

No benefit to expose to rain, unless it needs to be.

Also, if you get a chinese one w motion detector, the plastic windows on the detectors seem to degrade from direct UV exposure.

Not sure what you're looking to do here. If that were my house I'd try to mount a floodlight at the top of the main gable of the house itself, not on that entranceway. I'd put a ceiling fixture in the entranceway to illuminate the door and satisfy code.

I think that is what I will do
Flood light at top of gable and a recessed light underneath the porch
Any recommendations on a good LED floodlight and recessed light
I’m going to wire them so they both are on the same switch

I would also do one at the top gabel roof and one flush mount under the entrance roof.
A spot/flood at 8' high does next to nothing but blind you at night. Put them up high.

You wouldn't normally put a floodlight near a doorway as you would blind anyone that's walking up to the door. If it were mounted much higher, it would be better.
Just a thought....

:+1: to that ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

At my house, along with lighting over the door, I put in some low voltage pathway lights like this one. They illuminate the ground for safe walking but don’t shine into your eyes.

If you really want widespread illumination in front of your house, I would follow cyberdyke’s suggestion and put your floodlight up high at the peak of your house gable. For general illumination you probably don’t need thousands of lumens for such a fixture. Having multiple sources of light in front of your house will look better than one blinding light casting harsh shadows wherever it’s placed. I doubt that you want the used car lot type of lighting effect.

The main reason I said to place the flood under cover is all the chinese motion floods I have bought for 15 yrs have **** longevity from apperently UV degradation.

If you are NOT using one of those, just a double lamp holder, THEN I totally agree w up high.

And certainly two seperate switches for that and porch light.

Making progress
Really didn’t want to add another switch but if someone convinces me it would be safer I would. It’s not going to be inspected
Just inside the door there are 3 light switches
Why somebody put the 1 switch where they did I don’t have a clue
The 1 switch by itself controls a light on the carport
The other 2 are inside ceiling light and outside light which was beside the storm door. Where the outside light was will be a junction box now feeding the flood and recessed light on porch ceiling. 95% of the time these lights will be used are when we let the dogs out when it’s dark. No security problems where I live out in the country
1 Road in 1 Road out. All of the siding on that side will be replaced and gable vent will be removed.
My wife has brought up several times in the last couple years that it would be nice if the carport was closed in and a hot tub was in there. I’ve replied back that you will lose the carport space etc. cedd834d861350dc7b1ca70b819fc644.jpg78d0c6d76d3ce8360f5e932d90eb5272.jpg00e8b2c793e7d80b9d7e3deefb0f9482.jpgThe 3 nicer vehicles are in the garage but my son parks in the carport
She says how about closing the one side in with some windows
I said ok. I think she through the bait out and I took it. Next spring she will say “Honey” all you have to do now is level the concrete and add 1 wall and door. Oh well

Edit
The flood will be a 2 lamp

The only reason for separate switches is availability of freedom to select exactly what is wanted for whatever different situation.

No "Code" reason, inspected or not.

Nice work you are doing Hot shot.

Thanks! Gable vent, well that’s another story
I should’ve done this several years ago
The carport and front porch ceilings are the same type vinyl as the soffit (small holes) So all of the cold and hot air goes in the attic
No insulation above them
That is going to be replaced with solid vinyl and insulated
I will be replacing the 20 year old roof shingles come springtime
I have no ridge vent now
I will when shingles get replaced
Soffit and ridge vent will be my attic ventilation just like the garage no need for gable vent
No idea why they built it like that
Any guesses?

No matter what you do w soffit and ridge venting, the gable end vent is a good add in (edit insert - ) Almost ALL situations.

Yes, it will change air flow pattern, so I dunno... maybe if you have a shitload of soffitt intake and ridge vent, maybe maybe it is of no benefit.

But Ya, like for ice dam problems on roof above wall, you will have less flow through that area...

But generally, I would leave it.

But Ya, something to think about.
