Outdoor Lighting

Trying to find decent lights to put on the wall of my shop building.

Currently has a pair of porch lights roughly 11-12ft up on the wall. They are better than nothing, but they only light up the area right around the building.

My driveway area is around 80x200 feet. In the pics, roughly the area from the trailer to the Winniebango and to the building. I'm standing about halfway down the single lane part of the driveway.


Would like to light up most of that. At least light enough that I can walk around without needing a flashlight, and see what the dog is doing if I let him out... also maybe see moose before I going too far from the door.

Found those, but wondering if there's a similar version that would dim to like 50% brightness and kick on to 100% with motion or with an on/off/on off of the light switch. Also have a dusk to dawn sensor would be nice. Yeah I realize I can install that, but it's just an added PITA.

Running them 24/7 all winter would cost me around $15 a month, where my normal power bill is $60-70.

The only thing I can contribute to this thread is to buy commercial grade fixtures (e.g. RAB) from a supply house. Box store grade stuff is ****.

I think those would look ridiculous mounted to a building. Plus the 300 watts... that's about $45 a month in power if they are only on 12 hrs a day.

they make 100w and 200w versions. also some of them have a dim until motion, then brighten for a time period.

300w/1000 = .3 Kw
.3 x 4,380 hours = 1314 KwHr
1314 x .10c/per KwHr = $131.40 per year to operate
$131.40 per year = $10.95 per month to operate
This math assumes a rate from the utility company of 10c per KwHr. Your mileage may vary.

I agree with you that it's the wrong light for your application.
Also agree with others that outdoor fixtures from big box stores and amazon are complete ****, especially those with sensors.
