outdoor locking ladder storage

Does anyone store their ladder outside, and have it locked up and secured some way?

I saw a thread somewhere around here where someone had their extension ladder on hooks on the side of their garage (outside), and the hooks latched and locked. I cant find it now, but would love to find details on this, and any other ladder storage solutions.

i have a aluminum extension ladder and hate where i have it inside, and dont like things hanging above cars, so prefer outside solutions

Do you have neighbors? Not sure how I'd feel about somebody storing a ladder outside attached to their house. Okay, I know how I'd feel.

That being said on to the original questions. You could do basically the same thing you're doing inside outside. The only difference would be locking them. I would get some 2x8 or 2x10 to put inside, run a piece long enough to span at least two studs, lag bolt it to the inside of the garage, drill a hole through the siding and 2x10 for an eyebolt. Then I'd get some angle iron on to put the eyebolt through on the inside of the garage in addition to the 2x10. Then cable lock everything to the eyebolt. Basically they'd have to pull down your garage to get you ladders, and it's much more likely they'll just cut the cable anyway.

The eyebolt cable idea sounds the best. However any theif if they really want a ladder...will cut a cable or chain. I really like the shed idea..

Do you have a deck or anything in your backyard that you could store it underneath? It'd be mostly in the shade, however would still get wet, dirty, etc...

I have a couple of bike cable locks that I use to lock my ladder to a chain link fence.

I am a big fan of keeping the aluminum extension ladder outside. I try to keep as much as possible out of the garage, and this type of ladder is rugged enough to withstand the elements and it takes up enough space that it was never welcome inside. Add to that the fact that it's strictly an outdoor tool.

I keep mine tucked away next to the deck with no lock at all. I think any type of cable lock would be fine, something noticeable but not too crazy where someone gets the idea it's a super nice ladder or you are challenging the thieves of the world.

If someone really wants the ladder I guess that's my loss. Basically you are trying to prevent very opportunistic criminals or kids using it for a prank or something.

My big extension ladder is stored behind the house out of sight and chained/padlocked to one of the support posts for the back porch.

Its too big to fit in the shed and too cumbersome to try and fit it down the basement stairs. so outside is the only option. It's been there for over a decade and nobody has tried to steal it. (knocks on wood).

I have a pad lock and chain on it mostly because how embarrassing would it be if someone used it to break into mine or one of my neighbour's house.
Can't see someone running down the road with a 10 extension ladder

Thanks! No back deck, just a garage and a wooden fence that goes around the back yard. I primarly would like to store them outside for a)free up headroom b)install upper cabinets and storage c) remove chance that ladders might fall on a car.

i asked my neighbor what he would do, and he said he would just use a regular ladder hanger outside, and not worry about locking it -he isnt worried about someone steeling it or doing anything, and is ok with it.

I on the other hand, would prefer at least some safety and deterrence.

I like your idea with the brackets and just locking them to it. They make some pretty strong brackets these days. The only thing I would do is make sure they are BOLTED through the back side of the shed in much the same way I described earlier. The ladder might be secured to the brackets but it doesn't matter much if the brackets aren't on the shed.

The side of my shed sits about 3' from the wood fence. I hang my ladder there...it's not visible from any of the neighbor's houses or from outside my yard (or even from my house) - and the gates to the yard are locked....but I haven't bothered to secure the ladder.

If it were more visible I probably would, although doing it in a fashion that wasn't easy to defeat with a pair of bolt cutters would be a challenge...

I have a fenced area next to my garage that I keep the gate padlocked.
The ladders hang in there, on the garage wall.
There's a 5/8" shank forged eye-bolt that goes through the wall to a 2x6 that spans three studs with some huge washers on it. I run a cable through the ladders (the same eyebolt has a cable locked to the generator).

Yes, if they really want to steal a ladder, or my car in the driveway, or whatever . . .

As said above, what I'm worried about is an opportunistic criminal who wants to use my ladder to break into my (or my neighbor's) 2nd story with it.
My first care is not making it easy for them. Followed by slowing them down so they're more likely to be spotted and caught. And finally, something that shows signs of forced entry, for insurance purposes.

PCO6, what kind of hangers did you use? I am looking for something that I can hang my 8' aluminum step ladder(and a future 16' extension ladder) on the side of my new 8' W x 12' L shed building.

I have 2 extension ladders. A 20 foot aluminum and a 24 foot fiberglass. I have them both hanging on the 6 foot high wood fence in the back yard. No locks or anything. Not worried about theft. I am of the mind that no matter what it is, or where it is, if a thief wants it, they will get it. Adding security may make you feel better but all it does is slows a thief down a little. Is ladder theft even a thing?

Don
