I could use some brand name ideas for a nice outdoor motion detector light for my driveway.

I tried a couple from HD (Defiant was the brand name) and they were total **** .... (cheaply made)

Prefer an LED light - must be motion detector kind, I don't want the dusk to dawn kinda setup.

What do you have ???

RAB, they are the only motion sensors worth using. If I absolutely have to provide a motion fixture that's what they get.

EVERY motion detector fixture at H-D is ****.
RAB stuff is at least a legit manufacturer. And their customer service/return policy is really good, so at least if you get a lemon, they'll make it right.
LED's tend to kill motion detectors and photo cells, so going with a known manufacturer like RAB, Acuity, Cooper, Philips, etc... you'll at least be dealing with a company that recognizes the issues...
Good luck

The ones that sold at Homedepot and Lowes are both **** to extreme.... Don't get them... This one is actually decent..
Costco sells these for $40 or so... motion only very very bright.... so far so good...... for past 1 year..... only thing I don't like is too sensitive.... small feral cat ran by and triggers it. the older version of this actually had an issue that some times it is triggered, it won't shut off until you shut off power... or lower the brightness. but the new one fixed this bug... so if you have the older version having this issue return it to Costco for a newer one. Other than that the RAB one is good.... there is another company I have 3 of them for my parents place... but they ran out of business when Costco drop them because of some disputes...

I second the motion on RAB. I have several, and all, except one, have been perfect for quite a few years. The one that I had problems with, quit working because the motion sensor filled with rainwater. I told RAB about it, they sent a new motion sensor, in advance of me returning the bad one, and only asked that I send the bad one, "when you can."

Not sure of brand, but mine come on at dusk, but at only half power. When motion is detected it goes to high power. Been working for almost a year with no issues. It uses two 100w halogen bulbs.

Those are Dualbrite. I have them and really like them but they are not long lasting.

On our old house I wired a motion detector to a switched outlet that I had installed under the overhang. With the switch on the light worked like a normal motion detector. If I turned the switch off then on twice in real quick succession, the light would come on and stay on like a regular light fixture. To reset, turn the light switch off, then on and the light would come on for a short time and then operate as a normal motion detector.

Is this the way all of these lights work or did I have some weird light?

Thanks,
Mark

$200 for a motion light with two bulbs - I'll stick the the home center ****. They do work - not well, but $20 worth easy. Mine have been up for 4 years without problems.

I got mine from Amazon for $20.... don't even remember the brand. It works and I'm happy. But those RAB units look pretty good.

My HD Motion sensor has been working for about 12 years now.

Very shortly I think I'll invest in some of the new 'WEB Enabled' bulbs.

That is the way they all work, so yours is fine.

The reason they do it that way is so that you can turn the light on, and keep it on, for as long as you want so you can override the motion sensor.

Sometimes you may want to keep the light on, like if you have guests coming over to your house at night and you want them to be able to see in the dark before the motion light would come on. Or if you wanted to light up a space and keep the light on because you were working there and the sun went down but your not finished working yet!

Stuff like that. But there is another side to these motion sensor lights also!

My dad is 88 years old now, and he kept leaving his back flood light turned on all the time and he would forget to shut it off, sometimes for days.

He asked if I would put up "one of those lights like you have on your garage that comes on when your outside". I said sure, and I replaced his old standard flood light with a motion sensor unit, and I set it up for him, and said, "Now dad, don't mess with the light switch. The light is set to go on and off by itself. You don't have to mess with the switch".

After about a week, he called me and said, "That stupid light you put up for me won't work right. I went outside in the dark and it won't come on!"

I knew exactly what he was doing. He kept flicking the light switch on and off so that he would put the motion sensor light into regular mode. He just could not get it into his head that the light would stay on for about a minute, and then shut off on its own.

I was constantly telling him to just turn the light switch off, leave it off for about 20 seconds, and then turn the light switch back on, and then STOP PLAYING WITH THE SWITCH!!!.

Nope, a week later and again he would call and say the light I put up was not working right!

After about a year of this, I replaced the motion sensor light with the old style regular flood light, and told him, dad, it is now like 1955 again when you built the house. If you want the light on, you turn it on. If you want it off, you turn it off.

I haven't had a call about it now in 3 years.....

I use Coopers, solar powered, led motion activated, no wires to run, no switches, works even if the power goes out, model MSLED100 have been using them for about 5 years no complaints.

I have a similar need, but not from a fixture perspective.

I'd like to find an adapter for the small accent lights around my garage doors that are motion activated. It's just a standard screw in bulb, currently CFL. I've checked HD and Lowe's etc and can only find dusk to dawn. I'd rather not waste the power with them on all the time at night, but pop on when needed as we walk by after dark.

Suggestions?

CJ7VFR,

Great story about your Dad. I am preparing to start building my shop, concrete should get poured in the next 2-3 weeks. I want to put 3 of the motion detector lights on the front, but liked the way the one in my old house worked...wanted to make sure there was nothing special.

Thanks everyone for clearing that up!

I've seen the motion detectors, but they are a wire in type deal. I think it was Home Depot.

Are your accent lights hard wired into a box, or are they powered by a plug in cord?

If they are hard wired in, they sell just the motion sensor part without the lights as bmxdad said. You hard wire them into your lights to make them work like a regular motion sensing light. They cost about $20.00.

They look like this:

ae06382e-5de3-44b3-b173-435781c35785_400.jpg

There are also plug in motion sensors where you plug the cord from your light into the sensors power receptacle, and then plug the sensor receptacle into the wall. The motion sensor part is on a 6 foot long cord so you can place it where you want to get the best motion sensing. These are also about $20.00.

These look like this:

The downside to this type is that they sense the motion all the time, and will turn the lights on even during the day.

I have one of these on the lamp I have in my screened in breezeway between my house and garage. I wanted the lamp to come on when it was dark so we could see, but NOT come on when it was light outside.

I got around that by buying a cheap plug in timer that I set to only power the plug in motion sensor from 7:00 pm to 5:00 am.

This way, the motion sensor only gets power during the evenings when its dark and only turns on the lamp when I need the light to see.

^^ Mine are hardwired. Hardwiring that sensor may be my only option. I'll end up with 5 lights with 3 on the attached garage and 2 on the detached. I'll have to see how I can wire that sensor in. May be easier to just do the dusk to dawn sensors and some LED lights to save power. The lights are mounted to brick, so mounting the sensor will be interesting as well...maybe up in the sofit.

Let me caution you against Heath Zenith sensors. They ****! Even on the maximum sensitivity setting the maximum range seems to be about 20 feet, and there are blind spots for no apparent reason.

CJ7, I had the same problem ( identically ) with my Mom, who was over 100. Actually she was a little worse because not only couldn't she remember not to monkey with the yard light switch, she couldn't remember which switch it was. She would want the inside hall light on, and goof up the yard light. To make it worse, the yard light was on a 3-way circuit, so the position of the switch in the hall depended on what she did to the kitchen switch.

I bought a couple of guards at Home Depot, the covered the switch handles. They were domed, but one side was open, so you can still use the switch if you need to. That worked great for her....and me.

For some reason, my motion floods don't seem to work properly. If I flip the switch off/on to turn them on permanently, they only stay on for 10 minutes, the time that is set on the motion sensor for motion light illumination time. I gotta figure that out as it's a PITA when we're having a get together in the back yard and need some light.

That is great!

I purchased a similar thing to the switch guards you are talking about along time ago for my fathers house to install on his furnace shut off switch that is mounted in the stairwell going down to his basement.

He would forget that it was the switch for shutting off the furnace, and think it was for the lights, even though the light switch is installed inside the kitchen near the door to go downstairs!

He was constantly turning his furnace off thinking it was the lights!!!
And it wasn't only him who was doing this. Just about every person who came to his house that was over the age of 80 would do this!!!!!!!

OMG, what a nightmare. My dad would call me up at 2:00 am in the morning in the winter and say that his house was freezing, and he didn't know what to do.

First thing I would say is, Dad, go and check to see if you turned off the switch in the basement stairs. Remember dad, that one is for the furnace.

He would hang up, and two minutes later he would call back and say he could hear the furnace running.

This went on for along time until I found some guards that are basically a box that mounts over the light switch using the light switches two cover screws.

The guards are an enclosed rectangle with a door that opens for access to the switch. In order to open the guard you have to use one hand to squeeze the two sides of the guard together slightly, and with your other hand you open the door to access the switch.

I had to get something different than the ones you described that is the guard that just goes over the switch, but you can still flip the switch from the side.

I tried those, and my dad was still turning the furnace on and off.

I even said to him one day, Dad, you see the bright red plate around the switch with the words Furnace Shut Off don't you? And before you open the basement door, you hit the switch near the door to turn on the lights right? And when you open the basement door, you see that the lights are already on right? So why do you keep hitting the furnace switch?

He just yells at me, and walks away.

I do still get a phone call every now and then and he asks me how to open that "stupid little box you put around my light switch in the basement", but I tell him its not for the lights it's for the furnace and just leave it alone!

I would rather get a phone call at 7:30 pm from him complaining about the "stupid little box" than to get one at 2:30 am complaining about the house being cold!

I hear you, your Dad is a lot like my Mom. The sad thing is, SOME day WE'LL be just like them, and our kids will be complaining about us.

The one open side on the guards was good enough to keep Mom from goofing with them, but was still easy for me to override them when I was working outside and needed light.
