Mercury is obsolete, a quality high pressure sodium fixture will be the most reliable at the moment, LED is still getting the bugs worked out & most are of ChiCom origin, which means cheap ****. Most people prefer white light but for outdoor the amber color of HPS is fine, metal halide lamps have a much shorter life compared to HPS.

LED is fine and the best choice if you can deal with the high prices and the fact that it requires relatively significant heatsinking when talking lots of light. If you don't want that then sodium and metal halide are fine. LEDs will last longer and the chemicals used to make them are safer than anything else except incandescent.

Both sodium and metal halide include mercury which is really best to avoid. Even CFLs contain mercury, though fortunately the newer ones contain a good deal less than old ones did.

I like the metal halide, but they are not so energy efficient. You can go to Platt.com and look through their assortment. There are some fluorescents that are good for outdoors. They have the commercial products that can't be bought in the big box stores.
