I was thinking of building a work bench for outside of my shed.

Has anyone else done this? I'm looking for ideas, and pictures if you have any.

Thanks!

Ayuh,.... I use 'bout anything I can make flat enough to work on,....

If yer gonna build a permanent outdoor bench, Don't make it Perfectly Level,...
Pitch it ever so slightly forward to drain it,....

I have one, 2x8'. Sorry no pics though. It stays outside all year round. It is made with 2x4 PT legs to which I nailed flat pieces of azek in order to help w/ ground contact moisture.

I use it for stinky cleaning jobs on motorcycle parts. Keeps the fumes outdoors.

Yes, I did cant it toward the front so rain/snow will runoff. I also keep a large piece of an old truck bedliner on it when not in use.

The shelf underneath holds metal drain pans, cleaning brushes, etc.

Regards,

.

I built this bench specifically for outdoor use. It's made with PT 4x6's, 2x8's, and some 5/4 deck boards. I bought all of the wood on clearance at Lowe's for $30. It's 2.5'x6'.

How about one that folds up onto the side of the shed? Only fold down when you need it. Have legs that drop into position when you put it down.

There are some great ideas in here, keep em coming!

I want an outdoor work bench because I want to be able to work on stuff that won't fit on my cluttered indoor bench.

My neighbors would break out the pitchforks if I did this.:bounce:

It all depends on the kind of work you do. I don't do any (heavy) metal work but if you do (i.e. break out the grinder) might want to go with metal vs. wood. Most of my stuff is wood (hem fir), rarely finished but over-engineered to last over 10 years (or so?). No one works like I do, though if you want utilitarian stuff working with "stud" wood is the best way to go if you're a cheap skate...to the degree you're comfortable working with fairly thick boards. If I could afford to build everything out of maple I would but it ain't happening.:bounce:

To answer your question (based on my "style" for wood working)...if you want maximum duty build it crate (or slat) style out of pressure treated studs, make sure everything is cut to the same specs and use carriage bolts and locking nutsto secure the boards together. It'll be tough as f-all. Use a wood treatment finish (your choice) if you want color. You don't need to use studs for the top (in fact a pine butcher block would be nice but slightly pita to secure) but that's what I use because I stagger the boards for tool storage (gap so you can slide stuff between the boards). Total cost for me would be around 20 bucks at retail including hardware, sometimes I get home depot culled for 70% off that costs around a buck a stud. Doesn't usually have warping issues, has some "bark" (I assume that's what it is) issues but more than fine for everything but the legs.
