Hi guys, my project for this weekend is adding an outlet on the side of my kitchen island and running a new circuit to the box. I have been checking some diys and this are the materials i bought:

* Metal electrical box.
* Romex Type NM-B 12/2.
* 20 amp GFCI Electrical box set.
* 20 amp breaker.
* Plastic Staples.

What I'm worried about is that cable I bought is nonmetallic sheathed, so my question is: does it need to be a metallic sheathed cable?

TIA.

no. you need to bond the metal box though, use a 10-24 screw and a round terminal. wire nut the ground to the box, ground to the GFCI, and incoming ground.

you forgot the romex clamp for the box.

Tapped holes in metal boxes for grounding are 10-32

Thanks for the input guys, the metal electrical box that i bought have a clamp inside for the cable and I was guessing that it should be good enough, I totally overlooked the romex clamp for the panel tho but I'm thinking to probably call a licensed electrician for that part.

This is the box i got:

i have found those boxes to be such a pain in the **** that i wont use them. getting them to fit in the hole is a project in itself.

If the wire will be exposed inside the cabinet, then it needs to be protected inside conduit(emt or flex would work)

Is only gonna be exposed inside the cabinet for about 1 ft (behind one small drawer), would i still need the conduit? if that the case i guess i would need a coupling for the box also, right?

Sorry for the noob questions but I just wanna get it done right, I got some free time and i wanna do something useful with it :thumbup:

I just extend a piece of 1/2" emt from the box to below the floor. you would need a connector for the box. also put a bushing on the other end of the pipe or another connector.

Don't forget, the ground boding screw should be green, and used for no other purpose. Can't use the screw that attaches the box to framing for also holding the ground wire. Yeah, picky, picky. Green screws w/pigtails available at Home Despot.
