What type of outside light would you suggest for the front of a garage? Motion sensor, dawn to dusk, on/off with a switch? ....and why.

I think that depends on individual situations. in my case I put 2 lamps with a switch. I don't use/need them very often ( if at all really) so I didn't need anything other than just occasional light

If you need security, motion sensor flood lights. Let the thief know he's been spotted! Can be annoying if you have vermin raccoons in the area though.

Also helps when you pull up in the dark. No one has to run in and turn on the lights.

If decorative and they match the house, then maybe dawn to dusk, if the house does it too?

Motion sensor is nice when you don't want to fumble with the keys in the dark.

My shop is about 100’ from the house and faces the house. It is not a garage as it rarely has a vehicle in it. I have motion lights on the front and back. Neither of which I use, as the back light is a problem for the neighbors. The front light is a nuisance as it shines into the bedroom when coyotes, lions, deer, skunk, etc patrol their turf. The only motion light I use is the one on the big door opener. All my inside lights are on timer switches that automatically turn the lights off in 20 min or so. I didn’t think I would like those, but in the short winter days the one bank of those lights provide lighting for my walk to the house and then shuts off. I would like to replace my exterior motion lights with fixtures I can operate from the house when I want to off a small remote I can keep next to the bed.

It depends completely on location and usage. Our attached garage has motion detector lights because that is where visitors park, so the auto lights are a courtesy and safety item for them. My detached garages have no outside lights at all, because there is no need. If I need to work on something after dark, it gets moved inside. They are watched by security cams though. I have seen numerous videos where thieves’ faces are mostly obscured by hoodies and they aren’t bothered by the lights coming on.

I have one of these on each side of the 16 foot wide garage door. I use a timer to approximate dusk to Dawn.
I chose these because I don’t like light shining into my eyes when I drive in from the street. Most of the time I park in the driveway.
They give enough light on the ground to see to walk around emptying trash.

I live in a city on a quarter acre lot and my driveway is only 25 feet long.

My garage doors open to an alley, the neighbor kids like the motion sensor lights because the give them light to play by. The lights on the side and back of the garages and the back of the house are controlled by a switch in my house.

I have found that 10 watt LED lamps provide plenty of light.

The front of the house garage has a motion light between the doors. There is also a pair of wall light on the outer sides of the O/H doors. Around the corner is the man door with a light on each side of it, One light comes on with the front lights while the other light comes on with the back porch light.

My garage has 3 recessed LED lights in the front over hang. They are switched and rarely on.

I also have a single dusk2dawn bulb holder under the overhang with a green LED bulb in it. It's for my friends, family and fellow Americans that have served our Country.

We have motion sensor lights on the gate, garage, and out buildings. I ended up putting together fixtures from parts as it was easier to get a durable setup that way. They are old enough to have have incandescent, CFL, and now LED bulbs. The more recent installs (new building) have been LED units from Home Depot for about $40 each and they have been great. You can select dusk to dawn or motion activation for different durations.

I have 2 LED lights over each garage door. I have them on a smart switch that keeps them on from dusk to dawn. I have some outdoor cameras and I realized that if I keep the lights on dusk to dawn, the camera doesn't go into night vision mode and I get full color videos all night long.
