I have a 30x45 metal pole barn that has a 12 foot door in front. What I would like to do is put a couple of lights on either side of the door but don't know where to start as there are none there now. I was wondering if anyone out there has done this before and can give me a few pointers. TYIA.

Pretty open ended request there.
Start with pulling wire, installing boxes/switches, and installing the type of lights you like.
Kinda hard to tell from the info you've given which of those basic procedures are making you wonder how to do this.

Are you looking for outdoor illumination, security, or style?
That's the first thing you need to determine.
I put up lights for Security and illumination. I have 3 corner fixtures for motion lights. Two on the front and one on the back side corner close to the man door, and to shine into the yard. The back corner shines into my neighbors yard, so no need. The two on the front are dual brights with 65w bulbs. They burn a low light level at night, and when motion activated go to full power. This keeps minimal light around the shop all night, but more when needed. The back corner light is a standard on/off motion light for when out walking the dog, or if someone passes it.
I also put up a 400w High Pressure Sodium light for illumination. It's awesome. Most would say more than needed, but since it's on a switch I only turn it on when needed. And when I want the light outside, I want a lot of it.

Sorry about the vague question...lol...the only thing that I was wondering about was the best way to install the boxes as the structure is metal and the inside walls are insulated and 7/16 OSB. Also I would like to put both lights on a single dusk to dawn eye at the peak if this can be done. Again I am sorry about being so vague in the earlier post.

You can externally mount any of your boxes or cut a hole in the steel and mount them to the structure behind it. Not knowing if you have access behind the steel makes that a tough call. Use a weatherproof cover and lights rated for wet locations.
You can certainly put both lights on a single photocell. Power goes to the photocell first and then to the lights wired in series.
