seems to work for animal fats and greases...how about car stuff? - what is it...acid? alkaline? other? - how aggressive is it...would it take off paint if left on long enough? - reason i am asking is if you are doing degreasing on the car (as opposed to a removable part that goes into a washer), it clings - any experiences out there? - thanks!! ed

yep used it. It'll kill paint it can also be a bit aggressive on finished aluminum. But for cleaning caked-on grimey parts, it's a great 1st step. Soak it with easy-off then let it bake in the sun/heat for a while and hose it down.

I've used it to clean the pitch and **** off of tablesaw and circular saw blades - does wonders on that ****. I can't imagine that it would do a finished paint job any good...

Buy the kind for use in a cold oven and it won't matter. Regular oven cleaner will still work without heat but the heat helps it do it's thing. Not sure if sunlight would be enough to matter though. It will damage paint. Don't put it on anything you don't want it to remove.

I know the Porsche crowd uses it to remove the clear anodizing from their "FUCHS" wheels before polishing. Pretty caustic stuff.....

Oven cleaner is typically a powerful base, usually sodium hydroxide (lye). The newer formulations may not be the same compound, but they work on the same principle: saponification. The lye combines with fat or oil to form soap. The reaction goes faster when heated. Drano works the same way - the flakes of aluminum react with the lye to form heat, and the heated lye combines with the grease in the clog to make soap. A hot tank used to remove grease from car parts works this way too.

I don't know about where you live, but it regularly gets over 100+ in the summer here... Any heat will help chemical reaction... As to how much, that's open for discussion.

used it for years cleaning engine blocks when we pull them out works better than most things hot or cold in my opinion.

Heh, Canada. Thankfully it seldom gets that hot where I am. Usually only in the 90's for a few weeks through July and August. It can however get to -45 in the winter if that helps.
