Some companies sell a kit, with adjustable height, to clear the door. It consists of the wire mesh storage rack, and the vertical end pieces, and all the hardware you'll need. I think I bought mine(6 sets), at a local Ace hardware store. Mine are screwed in the finished ceiling studs(real fun in finding them). I made a Aluminum drill guide out of angle stock, so I didn't have to keep searching for the correct spacing.

Mine is a 10 ft wall and wanted just something to put things that I do not need very often or maybe ever, but light enough to get down. They are 18" x 48" and I did two sets so 16ft.

And something to think about is the quick release rope and those windows.. I've heard theives will bust out the window, grab the cord and roll the door up.. I removed all our cords. I made a simple tool the wife or I can use if need be..

I made a T beam, out of a 2x4 and a 2x6 and fired some lag bolts up into the ceiling rafters. Now I can store 6 18 gallon totes over the garage door, no problem.

They dont need to grab the cord, it's the lever the cord attaches to that should be wired closed.

Here are a few shots of mine constructed out of 2X4's and plywood.
