I'm a new member looking for information about adding an attached garage to my present house. I'm retired so have lots of time and am not in a rush. I'm still in good shape (knock on rafters) so I am planning on doing most of the work myself. I've done lots of rehab and carpentry work so probably will just have the floor done by somebody else and do the rest myself. I'm planning on 24' wide and could go up to 32' in length. I'm having a local engineer come by and take a look at my site and give me some recommendations and possibly draw plans, although that sounds expensive. I live in the county where they are fairly relaxed about formal plans and I might get by with some detailed sketches. A few of the planning dept and building inspectors know me as I've been talking to them over the last 9 months to get approval for a zero lot line on a small strip of land I purchased from my neighbor so I could build a two instead of a one car garage. I've excavated by hand down to the footings along the side of the house where the garage will attach. Great idea if you want to lose some weight. Anyway, any suggestions will be appreciated in this planning stage as I'd like to avoid pitfalls and $$ pit problems while I can still do it on paper. I'm sure I'll have more questions later as things become more specific. Thanks!
