Hey Gang,
Let me Run this Idea by you. I have a two car garage with a 12 foot ceiling. Garage dimensions are roughly 17Dx23Wx12H. There is a finished living space (Bonus room/FROG) above the garage. I would like to add additional shelf space above the garage door. At the 8 foot mark the door clears the open space with no problems. I was thinking of tearing out the drywall and installing additional studs so that I could lay in some 2x6 across the span after I put in some 2x4 as jack studs to carry the downforce. The walls have 2x4 blocking 2 foot up from the sill plate, So how do I get around those?
Also the center portions of the span will be suspended by unistrut and all thread from the ceiling joists.
What do you think?
Or is better to run a ledgerboard around the three sides and have the unistrut pick up the load at the front?
