Hey have a house that look like the picture attached want to build an overhang off my roof that covers the area shaded in yellow.

What I can't wrap my head around is the valley between both roofs and how it has to be framed. Any advice? Thanks!

If you visualize or draw the lower edge of the roof on both sides.

Start by visualizing where the rafters connect to existing roofs (peak of garage and that same height on the house ??)

The corner of that upper intersection has to tie (via line) to the farthest outward corner of the yellow square: the lower intersection. (thats the valley).

Then frame rafters from the upper connections to the valley.

The next part is supporting the valley as that's a lot of concentrated load.

Not sure if that helped or not.

So do you want to cover the ENTIRE yellow area, just 4' out or what?

Do you want the roof to have the same slope as it does now?(many HOA have a minimum slope in the by laws)

Does it have to be a continious slope from the peak or can it change close to the edge of the current roof?

Does it have to be cantilever or are post ok?

The roof is 6/12. Want to start about 4’ up from the fascia and come down, making a 3/12ish overhang.

Where the garage gable peak meets the house gable, extend that line across the house roof, I would stop short of the far overhang about four feet. Then set the pitch you want for that new roof line out from the house roof. Either chose a pitch you find the best looking and where it meet the height of the overhang of the house and garage is where the new roof ends. Or extend the new roof out to the garage overhang and that is your pitch. However, I think that pitch will be too flat. I'd stop the new roof about four to eight feet short of the garage roof overhang and it will provide the best balance of roof size, proportion and pitch.

The outermost corner of the new roof will have to be supported by a post or posts set on a concrete post down to the depth of the house foundation. In Virginia that may be two to four feet deep.

Can someone rough draw this out or point me to an image?
I have the same scenario coming up for a back porch add on and I can’t seem to visualize this.
Thanks,
Lenny

Covered patio - around 10' off the house.

Just make it a separate standing structure. If you were trying to expand living space I’d say take the roof off and redo the whole thing. In this case not worth it.

Agree -- build the cover for the patio as a separate structure.

The other is not going to work w/o removing much of the existing structure.

First do a 3D model so you can see what it looks like. I think you may not like the roof pitch change.

Second, Google "roof valley framing" and look at some pictures. Difficult. There are some weird angle that need to be cut in the framing. If not done correctly, the roof will be significantly weaker.
