Overhang on truss roof

Hi All

Just finalizing plans on my 24x24 detached garage. I'm using scissor trusses (4/12 over 2/12) for the inside trusses and gable end trusses. I know I can't notch into the trusses for the lookouts (like you can with rafters). My overhang will be 1 foot.

I was going to order dropped end gable trusses and cantilever the ladder over the dropped gable end, but I read something today that suggests for an overhang of 1 foot, I can just nail the ladder to the front of the (non-dropped) gable end truss.

Anyone know for sure whether this is OK (Chicago)

Thanks

Mark

Should be fine, On the last one I built I skipped the ladder and just screwed a 2x4 to the roof decking, one to the last truss, then added a filler at the top, covered it all with the soffit.

I will be building a 24x30, thats how I plan to do my gable ends...

Out of curiosity what are your trusses costing you? Im considering scissor truss just cause I have no use for an attic and wouldn't mind a little extra ceiling height.

1 foot ladder on the gables is fine. That is how I am doing mine too. I would sheath the gables first then nail the ladder on.

Price seems high - I read about 10-205 premium. Quotes I got from Menards:

4/12 24' Common trusses are $52 each
4/12 over 2/12 scissors are $109 each

Can't find anywhere else to get prices from around Chicago

Regards

That's a good deal on trusses. I paid $71 ea for 4/12 common 24'.

We don't have Menards here. We have HD and Lowes, but I didn't even bother checking with them, I don't trust them with something as critical as a truss and delivering them without damage. Mine came from a local truss manufacturer.

We don't have a Menard here either.

Couple local ish companies quoted me Between 85 And 120 Per Truss For 24ft Span common 4/12 truss. Didn't ask them about the scissor cause I thought it would be super expensive. Gonna price around soon cause I'm getting closer to building.

Lol I would gladly pay 52 each. My prices were delivery included

This is how our framers frame all of our houses. Then make sure the roof sheathing overlaps the ladder and engages the roof trusses by at least one but preferably two truss bays. Stagger your roof sheathing.

Seems my quoted price is not bad then (I'm sure that doesn't include delivery). I know the scissor trusses are special order (7 days). Not sure if they'll ship straight from manufacturing co (Midwest in WI)

Here are some example pictures of the soffit ladder framing method. Swung trusses today on one of our houses.
