Overhang Question

I am a new member, as this seemed like the right place to ask my question. I am in the process of quoting detached garage for my house. Primary purpose for my garage is for 2 cars and workbenches, as used to work on my cars. Also, all the attic space may be used for occasional seasonal storage. Some places quote 12" overhang (on sides) and some without, so my questions is whether these are needed? Is their an advantage? From my understand, my area has no code or requirement for them. I can save some money by not having them, but want to make sure I won't regret the decision later. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Chuck

I did the way around for mine mostly for looks. I think without just makes a building ugly. Also it keeps the rain a little further away from the building and the gutters a little bit out. The soffit will help the attic breath in the summer. Definitely worth the money IMHO.

Also look at pics on the net of with and without and see what you think!

When I built my garage a few years ago, my trusses came standard with 24" overhang. I cut them to 12" to match my house. If the house would have had 24", I would have kept the trusses on the garage at 24" too.
Overhang helps keep water and sun off the walls and foundation, so I like it.

No overhangs is one of those things that points to "el cheapo" to me, I see it on houses and garages and IMO it looks like ****. As pointed out, there are long term reasons for having them there. Alot less chance of foundation and wall issues.

My current house has full 2' overhangs all around and I rather like them, I can have windows open durig a monsoon and not worry about it raining in.

As someone has already mentioned, you might want to try to match your home overhang. I would not build a garage or home without an overhang. Not only does it look SO much better, it has other advantages also. Just agreeing with what others have stated. Hard to believe you'd save much $$$$ by not having them. Not worth it.

Translation....REAL CHEAP.....

Not much of an overhang (eves) makes the building look like a box....

Look in the garage build in my sig.....In retrospect I wish I had pushed my roof out a few more inches...and as you can see on the side where the big window is, it just makes it look better....

Ok....so it cost a few more bucks to do....the little extra money it cost is more than made up for in looks and use....

Like tdkkart, my house also have 2' eves.

I vote for an overhang. I have overhangs on the side of my garage where the man door is. It is nice to be able to open the door all the way out when it rains and not worry about the door getting soaked or the water easily coming in the door opening.

I agree with the others on it saying "cheap" to me.

Also, talk to anyone without overhangs and has had the gutters back up (from snow, ice, or leaves) and overflow into the house - and the resulting damage incurred - about whether an overhang is "necessary" or not... :wtf:

Thanks for the opinion. The price difference is not huge. I was more interested in the technical importance of the overhang. My neighbors garage does not have any, but most in my neighborhood do have them. Thanks for the opinions, as I will probably go with 12" overhangs.

Thanks,

Chuck

24" here ,all around on all my buildings. This is heavy snow country, longer overhang means the snow doesnt pile up against the wall when it slides off.

17.5" overhang on mine. 16" overhang on the trusses and then when you nail a 2x6 fascia board to the ends that gives 17.5"

The only thing with a long overhang as I have found out is the gable ends are more work (and money) to have more than a 10-12" overhang.

It really depends on the building size. On a small building a 24" overhang would look odd. Gutters will make that another 4-5" as well, have to factor that in as well.

U use gutters up there? Here the slide off will usually take any gutter with it,even if they are low on the fascia, the end of the slide will curl and take them out.I have this one goofy nieghbor that puts them up in spring, and takes them down in fall, they are all numbered.

edit) a couple winters ago,the curl moved slower and when it broke off,it took out a couple windows!

+ whatever number we're on for overhang.

Totally agree that the homes without overhang look cheap. I also see alot of them with stained stucco (if that's a common exterior in your area). I have 3' overhang on my house and love it for shade and rain protection. Also I have a covered walk around the house. It might just be personal preference but I think you can make a pretty practical case for them too.

I'm really hating that I came in here. I got my shop built and one of the things I overlooked was overhang. My pole barn doesn't have one. I really wished it did. Looks, and for the soffit to let air breath in there. I'm going to be spray foaming the inside of my shop, so now I have to figure out how to let the air breath in there.

And now I know it looks like ****. :(

I have three foot overhang on my house. Huge advantage in shade and water control.

I add as much overhang as possible even on sheds. I always regret it when I do not.

Add me to the overhang group. Any amount for a soffit vent and looks. I have 2' all around but wish now I would have went 3' on the front....

6/12 Asphalt shingle roof, snow doesn't slide off.

Can do gutters on metal roof, just need to tie it in better. Wouldn't be able to take mine off they are single piece, so 30-40ft lengths.
