Overhead Door Side Seals-Crazy Idea?

Ok, So new build, installed my own doors similar to my house garage.

Random though, the current market for garage door seals *****, they are expensive, but more so super ineffective.

My thought was to buy PVC trim 1x3, kerf cut the edge and install door weather stripping. Seems the door would close into it as it closes and compress it creating a much better seal. Could maybe even use magnetic seal.

What am I missing?

I would agree most common residential garage door seals aren't great.

Check out commercial/industrial stuff that's out there. what you're describing sounds similar. If you don't find exactly what you're wanting you can at least borrow some of their features to add to your idea.

So long as you you don't actually use it a lot, you'll be fine. Those seals are made for compression, not sliding contact. If you open it daily, I'd give it a few months, maybe. What the hell, try it and report back.

What makes you say they are "super ineffective"?

Properly installed on a properly installed door, they work just fine in most cases.

-40 below will make them stiff and not seal well, especially when the wind wants to blow 20-30mph.

I agree. If standard seals don't work, seems to me there is a build problem w/ the garage door framing.

I would think it would get worn down and raggedy but maybe not.

Green Hinges made a noticeable difference on my shop doors.

Get green hinges too. I thought they were too expensive and a gimmick. I now have them on 5 garage doors. Those and a good seal on the outside work great.
