Overhead Door Spacing

I'm trying to place two 10' x 10' overhead doors in the long side of a 34' x 54' garage. I'd like to keep them as close together as possible, but not so close that their placement will inhibit their use or interfere with inside parking, general access, etc. I realize there may be questions regarding side clearances etc., but leaving that info out of the consideration, what are your thoughts regarding what would be the optimum distance between the two doors?

On the house garage, I put them 2 block apart, 32". It makes for plenty of room between vehicles to open the car doors without door dings. I also have 9x8 doors.

I'm doing a 40' x 60' with 2 - 12' wide doors. I just decided to put 3 equal spaces between the corners of the building and in-between the doors. So, 64" from corner to door on both sides, and 64" in-between the doors.

Another thing to consider is what will be easy to not waste material. Depending on what you are siding the outside with, you may want to shoot for a full width of material (4' Plywood) or full widths of metal siding.

Mine are almost 5' apart, and that allows some useful apace between bays for maneuvering a vacuum, wheeling a hand truck, or other things that get dicey when done in tighter quarters.

I used three 14' by 14' doors spaced about 2 feet apart.

I placed my 9' x 8' doors with 4 feet between them. Gives room for some smaller equipment in between the bays and still leaves room to open doors.

John, You didn't mention what you are going to build the garage out of. NUTTSGT is correct when going with concrete block - keep it on 8" modules so there is no block cutting. If going with wood framing you can space them as you want. If you plan to finish off the inside of the garage, then conside the size of the panels you would be using. Also consider the remaining space on the ends of the garage. 54' is a lot of wall to work with. Take out the 20' of doors leave 34' to play with. If there is 4' between the doors, then there is only 30' left. You need to consider if you want to park cars head in at the ends, then the doors will need to shift to one end or the other to allow enough space. Plan what you want to do in the garage and the door layout will fall in place.

Good Luck with your project.

I have ~2.5 feet between mine and wish that I had 4 to 5'. I also regret not leaving more room between the wall and the edge of the door.

If you want them as close together as possible why don't you consider 1 big door. I'm not sure whats available but the door on my house garage is 18x8. I would imagine that there are many different sizes if you look at commercial doors.
