I'm curious what everyone's feelings are on having a overhead door off to one side.I know the norm is in the middle, but I just think that waste's too much storage space. I have a 42' X 60' X 12' lined up for construction in the spring and I'm thinking I want the main door off to one side.....any input?

Contractor suggested putting mine off to the side. In my case though Wall space is much more precious than open floor space. The area behind the door is going to take up the same ampunt of floor space no matter where it's positioned. If it's too far to the side, it will prevent me from making full use of the wall for shelving, etc.

I have the door off center in my shop it is 8' from the side wall it works out well for me room to work on the car and have my tool box against the side wall. I would not want the door any closer to the sidewall.

I guess I never realized the waste of the one wall if I were to put it 3-4' from the side. Now I'm really not sure on what I want.....?

Go for it.
It is one reason I like 2 doors vs 1 wide one.
You have the flexability to not use one door unless you need it to move in machines so stock.

My 40x60 has the door to one side. I'll be parking the fleet along that side and will have my work area up front on the other side.

Now that I think about it, I have been in many a dealer service area where the door, and drive thru aisle was along one wall and all the service areas along the other wall.
The cars are just angle parked, like on Main street.
This might be a way to work a wide garage into a narrow space. Like a single wide driveway alongside the house, going to a single wide door in the garage, and then angle park inside. You would need more building depth, but you could make it as deep as you needed.
And you would get practice backing up every time you pulled out.

I have a door in the front, and the back. They are both to the side.
I still have room along the right side for roller boxes, parts washer, etc.
