i'm looking to create some storage above the garage doors, or elesewhere dropping down from garage ceiling. I know there are many storage solution products out there that one can buy. However, i wouldn't mind building my own to save a buck.

Requirements:
- prefer sturdy wire mesh so lights can filter through and i can see what in the heck is up there
- strong enough to store lumber

Questions:

- Has anyone done this?
- Can you easily find the parts w/o spending a fortune?
- How do you engineer the weight capacity of such a storage solution?

Any comments appreciated...

You could use some http://www.sammysuperscrew.com/ with some threaded rod and some Unistrut and make your own rack.

It worked good to hang my extension ladders out of the way.

The weight capacity of the shelf system could easily exceed the capacity of the framing- especially if trusses are used.

I have installed a few Hylofts and they are a very nice product. Everything has been well thought out. I believe the smaller 3x3 ones are readily available at most retail outlets and the larger 4x4 must be installed by a distributor of hyloft. They aso make a pretty nice product that attaches to the wall with drop in wire shelves.

garage storage...

thanks for all the ideas, guys - i have since found the hyloft, and will investigate that further. just not sure of the 250lb restriction for the largest unit. i'm thinking the bracket idea as well may work.

I built shelves off my wall 2' out and decked with plywood, hung the outside with simpson strapping for wood framing windties 36" long and nailed to the truss and the shelf. Holding up all kinds of parts for my hotrods for over 3 years. Just wrap the strap over the truss on the top
