Overkill?

I am putting together a tire carrier for my cherokee (will post that later) and I had some scrap steel sitting there so I made this.

I figured I should build it to hold an iphone and also act as a wheel chock for a big rig.

My wife came out,,, looked at me and said "really". And I have gotten similar responses at the office.

Since the project is lame, I added a pic of my other dog for your enjoyment. Dont worry, berries are edible.

Its been ok so far today, but structurally I am concerned. Probably take it home tonight and add a flying buttress or two,,,, just to be safe.

I will criticize your choice in the I Phone or I anything, but that phone base would work just fine for my S8+ Android phone, even though I haven't found a need for one. This is GJ, so I am in the same boat as you.
Nice job! Paint it pink, and the ladies will want one. Add some butterflies or glitter and they may even pay you.

It was scrap and only took a bit of your time.

Yesterday, I was going to go to home depot to get some tool hooks to hang my big C clamps on the wall. After looking through the scrap piles, I found what I needed to make my own hooks. The 5-8" cut offs with a 45 degree cut on one side were perfect as is for a peg and some 3/16 scraps of flat stock worked for the plate to get screwed to the wall. A little grinding and a few mig welds and drilled holes and I had what I needed, all without going to stupid HD.

My drink holder for my truck is a piece of angle iron and rebar welded to it to make a cupholder. I had it all on hand and I was tired of those cheap *** plastic cupholders breaking.

I liked it....

yea if you can't run a truck over it, it's no good. the back needs some support .... get back at it. Needs heat treatment, and case hardening. powder coat? that would be a challenge in those back corners.

I think the back could have some holes for making it lighter and when there is no phone on it there would be less surface area so your desk fan doesn't blow it over.

Agree with Doug... needs a series of cooling holes... in a pattern.
