The timer is in the attic, so the internal on/off is not readily accessible. The original switch is down in the laundry room on an insulated "exterior" wall between that room and the garage. Existing wire, stapled, etc. The switch controlled the driveway lights and exterior floods - I put the driveway on a timer and left the floods on the switch. After a quick fix, now the missus wants a dim flood or LED to shine across the bedroom window exterior - that light is on the exterior floods. I may end up with both - off timer on/off switch surface mount in the garage and a separate run from the timer to her little flood outside the bedroom. Your typical one hour fix 'em up turned complicated.
My timer is old-old and still working, if it quits ever I would source a more modern unit. I just put some nice low power LED down lights in for the driveway and would like to see them when we come home after dark. I plan to add some soffit down lights in the front if I find some that I like and are dimmable.
This whole thing was a zero cost deal, using stuff laying around.
