But smoother does not necessarily mean stronger, right? I agree with you that the quality control of Chinese products is improving, but I doubt they can improve the quality of their steel overnight. It takes hundreds of years.

Taiwan products are almost there (Gearwrench) but China still has a little ways to go; with all this outsourcing, US manufacturing is going away .. :(

Were the Macto hand tools made by Wright tool? My older Matco tools look identical to Wright sockets/ratchets.... we the impacts made by them too; before Danaher or even before that?

I thought that Matco was sourced from Bonney...

Chinese QC has indeed come a long way... mostly because companies are sending Americans over there to oversee the process. Tooljerk: where would you get the idea that it would take hundreds of years for teh Chinese manufacturers to improve the quality of their steel???? That's just silly! In today's economy, all they need to do is place the damn order! Steel quality is steel quality. If they use a better grade of steel, they can improve the tools in a matter of hours...

i should not say this but, my friend have Sunex Impact Swivel Sockets, and i have Snap-On Impact Swivel Sockets. both are new. when i was checking out his socket, i could tell Sunex joint(moves) alot smoother than my SO socket.

+1 on Sunex. I have long and short versions of their 1/2" swivel impacts and like them better than any other brand I own. I also have the new HF 3/8" swivels in my road box and they look identical to the Sunex models --

All are made in Taiwan and are providing good service.

That's one of the biggest misconceptions - that a product's country of origin has a strong influence as to whether a product is of high or low quality. Instead, it's the company that mostly determines this.

Take Irwin vs. Stanley vs. Gearwrench, for example. Irwin's outsourced tools are quickly dropping in quality. Drill bits that snap like twigs, vice grips with misaligned and sharp edges, pliers with sloppy joints. Take Stanley tools, now. While they're not the greatest quality, I have found that even their outsoruced tools are of decent quality. Sometimes it's hit or miss, but I trust them as a company much more than I trust Irwin and others.

Finally, take Gearwrench. They produce overseas as well, but maintain an excellent amount of control over the production to ensure a quality product. As such, it's a bit unfair to call GW products "Taiwanese" or "Chinese" since they do not fit in with most other products under such a typically negative classification.

I've heard mixed responses about Sunex products, but not many bad things about their impact accessories.
