I found this ancient P&C ratchet at a yard sale. It was really rusty, but the secret sauce cleaned it up good. It's a one-way rat and I decided to see what the innards look like.

There's a big screw on the side.

Two parts came out. I'm guessing the gear was swaged to the outer circles when the rat was made, and that's why it doesn't come apart. If there's a trick to it, let me know.

I couldn't figure out how to remove the gear, so this is the best picture I could get. It's got 24 teeth. It's pretty smooth except for one tooth that has a little metal bit on it. It looks like it wasn't cleaned up when the tooth was cut. Maybe that's why this rat looks new. If I was really careful, I could clean that tooth up.

I put some red lube inside and it is smooth, except for that one tooth. It's not the kind of ratchet I'm fond of, so I plan to put it up for sale.

Wow! Talk about simplicity; thats cool to see something thought out in such a basic manner! I wonder if the tool engineers of today; could learn something from this design?
