I checked all the proto and plvmb ratchets shown on A.A., and the handle looks like a perfect match, but the head on my P&C does not match up. I'm sure it was made off the same style as them tho, as these companies were all weaving a tangled web back in the 20's-40's and on, which I have read about many times, but still confused about! I have an old late 40's "Baker and Hamilton" hardware catalog, and they list a 1/4" #0245, (nothing about a #0246), but show no picture of it. So, I suspect this one could be 1950, or 1960 vintage, but not sure yet?

I see P&C all the time. I usually pick up as much as I see. (We're not talking buckets full, but maybe coffee cups.) They are great quality, and a nice 'sleeper' brand that not too many people seem to collect.
Pawnshops have the truck brands under glass, but the proto and p&c dumped in buckets.

I have a few P&C sockets, and I also have a set of P&C slip joint pliers. They are good quality tools that don't turn up here in South Georgia too often.

Izenglish that 1/4 inch ratchet of yours was made in or before 1953. In 1953 P&C registered their logo and sometime in or after 1953 they started adding the R in a circle trademark symbol to their tools. I have a 3/8 P&C ratchet that looks just like yours only bigger. It is # 3209 and i also got mine at a flea market. Yours and mine are a cross between a Plomb WF style ratchet (handle) and a Plomb / Proto pear head (head) ratchet.
A few years ago I had a P&C 1/4 inch drive ratchet with the pebble handle like the last Plomb ratchets had. I let it get away in a moment of weakness. I am currently putting together a collecton of Plomb / Proto / P&C related ratchets including import knockoffs. I need to buy another top box just for thease ratchets.

I believe I'm correct in saying that Alloy Artifacts says that P&C made Thorsen tools. Thorsen tools are more popular in SC. I have picked up many examples in pawn shops and flea markets. I was given a Thorsen 1/2 drive set by sister and BIL for college graduation in 1962. That ratchet should be considered a classic. It is the easiest of all ratchets to one hand change directions, even slightly better than the old pushbutton release Craftsman. All the Thorsen takes is a flick of the thumb or forefinger. The design is compact and rugged. I look for broken ratchets to repair, but I have never found a broken Thorsen.
Not long ago, I gave the Thorsen set to daughter, since it had sentimental value, and promptly bought a 1/2 drive P&C ratchet in excellent condition.
I also have found 1/4 and 3/8 drive Thorsen ratchets, which I bought, but have not found P&C ratchets in those sizes, or, for that matter, 3/4 drive ratchets. Don't know if the 3/4s were even made.

Nope, - Ned Boyd (A major player in P&C marketing and sales) had a falling out with Peterson and Carlborg in 1929 over a contract for an airplane co. and started Thorsen in California. P&C Mfg. was acquired by Plvmb in 1941, but the name continued until Ingersol Rand ended the operations in the late 60's

The 1/4 inch pebble P&C was sold to a member of papawswrench tool site. I believe that person also is a member on this site. Maybe if we ask nice, he will post a picture of it. I have only seen one other one in many years. I just went to the other site and posted a topic asking the buyer of my ratchet if he would post a picture of it here.

Here is my buddy Cliffs.
Disorganized and messy, but there is a complete 1/2" P&C set in this box. All the 1/2" is P&C.
All the smaller stuff is mixed up.
I was over working at his place the other day and liked to choke when I saw it!!

Someone on papawswrench post a link to a post on the Garage Gazette about the 1/4 inch P&C pebble finish ratchets. Seems they is two variations of that little P&C pebble. Thank you jabberwoki for posting the picture of your ratchet. Is the drive stud reveresed on your ratchet ?

Just found this deep in the back of one of my cabinets. Repair kits for 4" to 20" Adjustable Wrenches. Now P&C, Proto, Fleet, Vlchek, Challenger, Penens
from what I remember the Adjustable Wrenches, were all made by Jamestown Mfa. in Jamestown , NY. for all of them in the 40s -70s I think
