This is very old school. I was given a box that looks like it is all there of P&G valve gapper. It has a dial indicator that fits 4 different sleves and has adapters. It was made in Portland Oragon and is in a wood box.

Does anyone have any experience with this old tool and how was it used? I have the instructions and it says for almost all brands and includes some tractor engines.

My camera is not here or I would post a photo.

It is the 300 model. I see one like it going for over $50 on E-bay right now. My box is very dirty. but it seems to be all there.

Here is a link with instructions and pictures. http://www.ctci.org/gilsgarage/ValveGapperInstructions.php

You could check your valve lash with the engine running to get a high level of accuracy.
I am old enough to remember when they were advertised in Hot Rod, Car Craft, etc..

Thanks, I just found it. I have always used feeler gages. I have a small machine shop and all the indicators known to man. I even have bore gages and cylinder bore gage but never have used them.

Hello,

I have several of the P&G gap lash tools and use them from time to time. I think there are several different styles/models.

You need to figure out which adapters the set has...most were sold for a particular engine but I think they did also sell sets with multiple adapters.

The only valve setting tool that would tell you when a keeper on a BBC was getting ready to fail, letting the valve and piston meet. It would not give consist readings once the valve was set and rechecked by spinning the motor over on the starter ("bumping") with a underhood switch. Time to change the keeper / save the motor.
