Any info P&M Mfg? This extractor came in a box of tools from a garage sale. Built like a tank and it looks like it was used like it. Patent on it 1918522 references the expanding mandrel mechanism, not the tool.

I got nothin'.

P & M / P & M Mfg. Co., Los Angeles CA (?) / patent 1918522 Jul 18 1933 Hubert R. Crane / pipe expanding mandrel /

interestingly, Mr. Crane assigned one sixth to Earl and one sixth to Harry. Perhaps a partnership?

It's now 14:33 PST, which means I have exactly 120 minutes before sundown, and 150 minutes until they lock the gates down at the Park,
which means I dare not venture down the "P & M" rabbit hole at this time.

Run a Google search on each of those names - in quotation marks - like this: "Orin J Buckley" Los Angeles
(with just the name in quotation marks.) (try that first.)

following up on this one.....

I found nothing on "P & M" (which is no surprise, as trying to find information using Google using only two letters of the alphabet is a fool's errand.)
What I did find was that Hubert R. Crane was issued a number of patents, all of which relate to pipe.
Your "expanding mandrel" is a device to expand the end of a pipe. (see swaging)
As an odd coincidence, there used to be a huge plumbing parts manufacturer named "Crane".

Mine is like fig 3 in the first image, with only two pieces that move. Seems like that would cause the pipe to expand unevenly. Trying to expand galvanized pipe with this tool would require a lot of force, and there's better options for tubing.

Me thinks "expanding" on the patent refers to the action, not the function.

Don't know if Hubert is related to the founding Crane brothers, but its an interesting coincidence.
