If I remember your first post, it broke while running. I know the 2.0 is a interference motor. You may have a bent valve or three and the noise is compression leaking out as the cylinder fires. I would recommend a compression check. But, it could be the tensioner (spelling?) on the timing belt, it could also be an accessory on the front of the motor not installed correctly. I don't see cam endplay being the culprit if it was fine before the timing belt broke.

its also common for a werring or slight whining/whistling noise to be around for a few thousand k after a new timing belt is replaced. this has to do with the teeth and timing gears re-meshing with one another.

Garb, its alot more than a winning noise, wish you were right. It makes one noise under load and another when slowing down.

sounds as if the timing belt might be too tight. What year is it and what size motor? If it is a 2.0 that does have an interference motor, 2.4 was not.

Why wouldn't any *good* mechanic bring the cam end play up before finishing the job. I would have told you and offered to repair it also for additional money. Some mechanics should be street sweepers instead...:headscrat

cam end play amount didn't suddenly change with the new belt - if it wasn't noisy before then you are correct something is wrong.

Waterpump and tensioner replaced also ?

I just replaced mine and it was fun. If the mechanic took shortcuts he was stupid, it's too much work to have to do twice.

These engines had a problem with the camshaft position sensor, which is also what keeps the camshaft from moving from end to end (camshaft end play) They usually go bad slowly, but if the timing belt broke all bets are off. If your mechanic is a decent one and knows what he is doing, he should be able to find the cause of the noise and fix it.

The 2.0 engine is definitely a valve bender. I have a head from one of them in the shop right now and it has 6 bent valves :(

According to the Gates web site the '02 PT Cruiser only had the DOHC 2.4L engine. Apparently the 2.0 was not used.

SOHC engines (2.0L and some 2.4L) were interference.

DOHC engines (2.4L) were NON-interference

The 2.4 motors in the PT Cruisers will bend valves if the belt breaks. If a timing belt kit was used, it will have a new design belt tensioner included. If the tensioner is set too tight, the belt will "sing" until it stretches or seats in. These are not easy cars to work on.

hmm might be the tensioner, the camshaft position sensor or a motor mount
if you replaced the center mount on the passenger side it can really eat your lunch; i installed an aftermarket one that was slightly more recessed letting the bolt through the mount to the engine touch the tensioner
damned if it didnt go 1000 miles before it gave up and we figured it out
also that car broke two belts and no broken or bent valves

Isn't it sad that you can't work on a modern car any more without having all the high tech **** that's needed to 'fix' a car. The damn major motor companies have designed in the inaccessibility and redundancy to prevent us from keeping a car longer than 7 years. Now that electric thingos are becoming more into the fray it will become impossible to do any work on your car at all...just change the trim and fit an artificial V8 noise generator.

Ain't this the truth. I'm so sick of sideway mounted engines!

The PT engine wont let the valves hit the pistons. But if the belt strips or breaks the intake valves can hit the exhaust valves and thats what bends them.

It's a hemi engine with intakes on one side and exhaust on the other.

Two teeth off? I am surprised it ran. The Gates kit has all of the parts---belt, water pump, new style tensioner. I understand your frustration. It is so easy (as easy as anything to do with this job can be) to do it correctly the first time with new parts. I have owned my first and last PT Cruiser.
