Anyone have a picture or can help me with fabbing a hooded type lockbox to protect a padlock? I've only seen them on Matson type containers (lever) but not on a swinging gate. I have an idea what to do but thought maybe someone out there has a better design.

Thanks in advance

I have seen these on gates before. They were basically a three sided box that the lock went inside, which protected it from being cut.

exactly^

Anyone here have a design that works with a fixed post and swinging gate? I thought of cutting a slot in the padlock "hood" (which is fixed to the post)and on the gate weld a type of U bolt that would insert throught the slot and the padlock attach to the U bolt (which would be hooded/protected). Make snese?

Thanks rmcBride for the pics. Great idea for the application. My gate is only a 5 footer with not much play to make something like that. It's basically a swinging gate lined up with a post(1-1/2'' square) 1'' apart. Right now I have an ear on each side with a hole in it. It limits me to only a padlock that is less than 1'' thick and 1-1/2'' wide for protection.

I've seen something similar in NC many many years ago. It was a doublewide gate and the box slide over one horizontal bar onto the other and the pad lock underneath like pictured above. Sorry I can't remember all the details but it was like 25 years ago.

here's a pic. as you can see the post and gate itself is protecting the lock from being tampered with.

:headscrat Won't a grinder, torch, or sledge take out the gate around the padlock at that point? :wtf:

I hear you but I wanna make it as tough as posible for these bastards.

A 94 year old lady got killed a couple of weeks here in Honolulu. A dopehead torched her son's workshop to get at model airplanes. Burned the whole house down with her in it.

You can use an american 2000 padlock with two angle tabs. No exposed shackle to cut.

You could just put a plate in front of your lock that extend 6" above and below. You may keep them from the lock but your hinges don't look up to much abuse. A couple pound hammer may break them off. Also if going through all that trouble I would think they would be inclined to climb over.

I hear all you guys. But if they wanna grind, whack away...make all the noise they want. Just keep them busy long enough for the cops to arrive.

They can climb over the fence. Just don't roll out my Harley.

The problem I have right now is that I am limited to a 1-1/2'' shackle and a lock that is 1-1-1/4'' thick max. Looking at my pic, there is no way they can get to the shackle with bolt cutters, a grinder...maybe only a torch. Even if you were to swivle the lock, the shackle is not exposed. The design is pretty good. I should have made the gap wider, then I would be able to get a thicker-beefier lock in there.

Your setup is a cinch to me. Turn the lock 90 degrees and give it a twist with a crescent. Try it. You will be shocked how easily they fail.

how secure are the hinges? the hinge almost looks like the weak point to me from that picture. give me a 10lb sledge and a pry bar i will have it off in under 5 minutes, and + if they want it bad enough they will just run the gate over/rip it out nothing your lock can do about that.

I didn't try it, When you swivel it 90, the shackle doesn'ty extend beyond the posts. Also there is maybe 1/16'' clearance on either side so torqueing it is near impossible.

Very true about running the entire gate down. But by the time they cut the bike off a 14mm chain that the bike is grounded to,HOPEFULLY cops arrive by then.
The hinges are made frome 5/16plate with a 3/8 rod going through a hole so it's plenty tough. If they whacked it off quick, the bike won't fit through that side. It's a double gate.In fact I don't even lock that side.

I was thinking (oh oh), what about me cutting a 2'' pipe down the middle and welding the half pipe on either sides forming a hood? I just need to have enough clearance so that getting the key in isn;t a pain in the ****.

What about welding a piece of flat bar stock on each side of the gate, one to the gate itself, and the other side on the fence? Do them opposite of each other so the gate will still swing. You can leave the base of the lock exposed so that you can still get it unlocked. Also, if you are looking for more security, you will want to protect the hinges as well. Trust me, I breached doors professionally for many years, and if the lock was fortified, I would just hit the hinges to get through it.

There are gates like this all over the farm country of northern California. None of them are fail proof. You basically want to make it so the thief needs to make a hell of a lot of noise beating it apart or light up the night with a torch. Either one is likely to attract the attention of the owner, who will most likely show up with a shotgun. Bolt cutters are quiet, and that's what you're guarding against.
