That's a Proto No. 41-1/4 center punch. It has a body diameter of 1/4 inches.

Is that the size punch you use or is yours larger?

I would use a straight punch to remove the old one. just smaller that the hole, its hard to mess the removal up. But if you are going to brad the new one in, I think what you have in the pic will do ok.

I do not know if there is a correct one. I would start with a flat pin punch, to flaten the stub out, then finish with the punch you have pictured, but with a small hole, like 1/32 deep, just to help finish with the fill.

It may, but you can reset the dimple, its just depends on how far the new pin is up from flush. If its flush to start with I would use the punch in the photo just to help set it. If its longer than flush, you may want to file it down and use a flat punch first then the center punch to reset the dimple.

What you want to do is have a flush fit, and make sure its not loose, where it will easily come out.

That's the way it sits BEFORE being set.

I'm still too scared to strike it without knowing the correct punch to use. :shocking:

But is it the right size center punch? The tip diameter is damn near the same diameter as the stem. It fits in the dimple of the stem beautifully though.

A center punch thats bigger than the stem of the lever may be best. As long as you go slowly, your not going to ruin anything. A larger center punch with the same taper as a small one will so the same work until you hammer it to far.

it looks like it's the size i would use.......but it really doesn't matter, all your doing is making it tight. it could be done with a hammer for that matter but by using the center punch you will be spreading it evenly. it ain't rocket science!

The ratchet is resting peacefully on the living room carpet. I may call Snap-on tomorrow and try to talk to one of the engineers. Wait!! Tomorrow's Saturday. :eek2:

Seriously, you're just jinxing yourself here. For being this paranoid about it you might just possibly mess it up!
Spend the 15 seconds getting it done and it's over with, taking 1 picture and posting it takes more time.
You could always go out and buy a holder/handle for the punch and tape a level to the side so you know it'll go on straight, or use a press, etc, lol.
