I can only offer this, I bought some really cheap primer from Home Depot (that's what I asked for) for $10 a gallon, and the stuff didn't cover well at all, then when I tried to paint over it, it seemed to **** paint up like a desert. Moral of the story, don't buy cheap paint.

The "good" primer I bought ($25/gallon) went on smooth, covered well, sealed the drywall and the top coat went on smooth too.

In our area, True Value stores have Dutch Boy on sale for half off, that's what I've been using in my garage and boy howdy is it some nice stuff! And at $12.50/gallon, it's a good deal.

Primer is paint. It is as simple as that. You can use any kind of paint you want, but expect to put on 2 coats to get good coverage. You can use 2 coats of paint, 1 coat of primer and another coat of paint, or you can use the paint/primer. Any way you do it, expect to do 2 coats.
The paint/primer is nothing more than a sales gimmick.

I dont know about the science of it, but Behr primer/paint is phenominal. I used it directly on my white sheetrock, and have had zero issues. Excellent coverage.

Ii have used the Behr exterior grade for the outside Bilco door, carport ceiling, soffit/fascia and other outside work. Looks great after 2 coats have been applied. Of course prep work was required.

Over here I've used Dulux 'Once' to good effect. Not as good a finish as proper primer, sanding, more primer, top coat, sanding and final top coat will give you but I prefer a bit of patina as opposed to the smooth shiney plastic look my ex-father-in-law achieved.

I used it - NEVER AGAIN! Did not save any time or cover any better and it cost more in the long run. I did three rooms with the blend and then the balance of the house the old fashion was - prime first with a stain blocker (kitz) and then use paint.

I use Behr Premium paint (on sale here this weekend) and I like it. Coverage is good, but I will say that if you are covering stripes, or some odd color variation, expect two coats. It is paint, not a miracle. For general use to cover a similar color, or a lighter color, one coat is all it takes. I've had so-so luck going from dark walls to light walls. It really depended on the color the wall started as and what I was going to. I recommend Behr Premium to all my friends.

Kilz is good stuff, but if you want the best you cannot beat Sherwin Williams Prep Rite Probloc. Sherwin's paints are also the best. I balked at their prices and refused to use their products for years. When I remodeled our downstairs I hired a friend to do the painting- he was down on his luck at the time- and he insisted on the ProBloc. He's a phenomenal painter.

Once I saw the ProBloc dry and felt the texture it leaves to "grab" the paint, it made all of the sense in the world. You definitely pay for it, but the stuff is awesome.

This.

You get what you pay for. Sherwin Williams and Porter are the only brands I will use in my own home. They cost significantly more than Lowes / Home Depot, but the difference in quality is tremendous.

SW's SuperPaint is a primer / paint combo. I've used it many times, but always over a previously painted surface. The hiding characteristics are unbelievably good.

If I'm painting over new drywall, however, I always use a proper drywall sealer / primer. Again, the Sherwin or Porter product won't be cheap-- about the same as a gallon of finish paint at the box store-- but the results speak for themselves.

Good luck with your project!!

Same thing ... Very good results with the same paint, paid about $32 per gallon. The paint has been on for a few months, no issues.

The whole paint and primer in one thing doesn't make sense to me. Primer is made to adhere to the surface it's being put on, and to "accept" the paint and bond with it.

So is "paint and primer" in one really just colored primer? I don't get it.

I have just went thur painting 7 rooms using Behr paint. I started out with the paint with out primer. Then switch up to the paint with primer. What I found out made me a believer, you just need to use a good (microfiber) roller cover and take your time. I had better coverage with one coat of the paint with primer than with-out. Even with a change in color....darker to lighter.

I painted my garage 8 years ago. The walls are raw OSB. I put on one coat of oil based primer to seal in the dyes, and a second coat of latex gloss. I got excellent coverage, and nothing has seeped through it 8 years later.
The secret is the oil based primer underneath.

I was skeptical of paint and primer combo. Recently had to do some painting so I bought the Behr brand. Frankly, I was blown away. That stuff is awesome and I will never buy anything else. Coverage was great and it laid on so smooth.

Recently I repainted a metal gate. I used regular Rustoleum and it went on ok but I ran out mid project. Bought their paint and primer spray paint, again amazing results! Far better coverage and used less paint overall!

I've used the DutchBoy brand. Interior is called 'Platinum' and exterior is 'MaxBond'. It seems like a very good quality and is holding up very well even on the unprimed brick and stucco. I'm a believer.
