Anybody know of an off-the-shelf hammer tone spray paint that is close to the original Wilton color?

That's the one, but it is not very durable. I used it and got good cosmetic results but very poor durability. I used Acid etch primer under it and did wire wheel down to bare metal. I would not use Rustoleum paint ever again for any demanding application. Maybe an engine paint would be best. Limited colors though.

On a slightly tangential topic, some of of the electrolysis rust remover web sites mention using a "passivator" after rust removal to prevent rapid re-oxidation.

Has anybody used this additional step? I believe it is a mild phosphoric acid. The claim is that it prevents the rapid re rusting that you will get even minutes after the electrolyte bath and promote paint adhesion if you are going to repaint.

Two specific products that were mentioned were "Jasco Metal Prep" and "Ospho"

Yup, it is pretty close to the original Wilton color. However, for more modern vises the light blue hammertone is a better match.

I had my vise sand blasted and it rusted before I could paint it. It was only two days and quite rusty. I took the rust off with Evaporust and then sprayed it down with Metal Blast http://www.rustbullet.com/productcart/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=127 and just wiped it down and waited for it to dry. It prevented the flash rusting.

What about primer?

Assuming I remove any surface rust either elecrolysis bath or mechanical means, what is the suggested metal prep and/or primer before the color top coats?
