I snagged one of the 56" stanley boxes from hd when they were on sale for 399 but I really hate the red color and was wondering if anyone has ever wrapped or painted their box? if so how is it holding up?

I painted an old Mac MB920? top and bottom. The drawers had already been painted before I bought it so I decided to paint the entire box green. I used rattle can Krylon Industrial "rebar green" with epoxy. It's been about 7 years now and it's holding up surprisingly well. Mind you I'm no pro so it doesn't get a ton of use.

I'm actually planning on getting a new 56" box myself soon and like you hate the red. This time though I plan on wrapping it in vinyl, but it's going to be costly. I figure about $200 in vinyl alone and that's just the bottom box. Eventually I plan on getting the top too and wrapping that.

Wrapping a box yourself is pretty damn tedious, but it looks good in the end.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that. If you've never done any vinyl wrapping it may be more than you want to take on. One positive though is a box is all flat surfaces. Concave and convex surfaces is where it really gets interesting.

My dealer had a box that I needed quickly and will be used only to hold press tools, like different sized spacers and other puller type tools. It came in Flaming "F" ing orange. I asked my body guy to paint it and he did not want to do the drawers.
So I took the sticker it option, it looks less orange every day.

I would post a picture but my phone will not connect to my pc to share photos, the phone is close to being smashed and the gold plated items picked out of it.

I used to own a sign shop so vinyl wrapping is not a problem. I am leaning toward wrapping just bc i know how well vinyl will hold up and i see paint giving me issues down the road

Definitely, wrap it then. You also get the added benefit of being able to take the vinyl off and have brand new paint under it. If you decide to sell it some day.

Out of curiosity, what brand were you thinking of using and any colors in particular? Myself, I prefer Hexis HX30000 or HX20000, but the former is harder to come by, over the 3M 1080 Scotchprint. I am digging the new 3M neon fluorescent green they now offer though.

For $200, you could probably get it powder coated...

You're about right. Just out of curiosity I called a local powder coater and they told me $150 for a 56" wide lower box if I wanted an in stock color. If I want a custom color it'd be $25 a pound and it'd take 2-3lbs. That's them just powder coating the parts that are visible from the outside, not the drawer insides. Wrapping though would be the same as there's no way I'd take the drawers out and wrap them.

I didn't realize powder coating was that reasonably priced, especially such a large item. I should find out how much it'd be to get the wheels on my car powder coated.

I think you have made your decision and a wrapped box could very well be cool, but I can't imagine hating a color so much on a $400 box that I would care enough to change it.

But that is why there is chocolate and vanilla and dozens of other flavors:eek:

I had a MAC box done a few years ago. quoted $200 for one color, $240 for two colors. Ended up being $80 plus some ammo I'd got for free. Carcass is antique bronze, drawers are hammertone black.

The **** quality OEM paint literally wiped off with a rag soaked in lacquer thinner..

& because I didn't have room for yet another toolbox in the garage, it got used in the kitchen...

Okay, so I should have a HF 56" lower within a week or two tops, and I've decided to wrap it. I like the powder coating idea, but that's only the outside of the drawers. So, every time I open one I'd see the difference. With that being the equal, I'd rather have vinyl that I can some day remove if I ever want.

I've decided on two colors because of how they'd look with the red drawers open.
Frozen Grey Metallic wrapped on a 6 series Bimmer, or Marrakech Brown Metallic on a 3? series Bimmer wagon. I think the grey would look best with the red drawers insides almost old school Craftsmanish.
