Hey Guys and Gals, Have a lot of old car parts that I'm saving for my 23 year old grandson.Built a new barn for storage of our hot rods and wanted to mark
the years and make on the old parts that will hold up for a while.
What do you folks use to mark something like this?Have seen junk yards use some type of marker but failed to notice or ask what they used. Thanks so very much for your time and talent.

My understanding is that they use something like this.

Those kinda lost out to the new style of markers for writing on parts. Actually most modern dismantlers now use computer generated tags, the hulk is about the only part that is marked, with a inventory number.

When parts are marked manually, they usually use a paint maker, that is a felt tip marker that has paint in it. The traditional squeeze paint markal's have a steel roller ball, and are just allot slower to use to write on, but will go through grease and dirt where the felt tip markers dont do that to well.

I have both here at home for marking parts, but prefer to use tyvek blank tags, and I use a sharpie and just write on the part what it is, or fits or whatever info needs to go on the part.

added note, brake cleaner does a good job of removing the paint markers when the info needs to be removed.

The paint markers are very good. Lasts a long time.

I use tags (about 3"x5")made of heavy paper with a reinforced hole (bought 500 of them on eBay a long time ago) and a bit of wire to attach to the item. Very durable and you can get much more information on them.
