paint problems

Need some advice. I hired a painting contractor to paint my new shop. I followed everbodys advice on a smoth finish on the drywall. The mudder put 4 coats and the joints are 3'-4' wide and did an excellent job. I told the paint contractor I wanted semi-gloss white for the ceiling and walls. The bottom 40" is grey with a red strip between the two colors.

The problem is after 1 coat of pva primer and 1 coat of semi-gloss white you can see every drywall joint. I know I now need another coat of white. Is that going to be enough? The contractor didn't think another coat would help much as it was semi-gloss and wants me to change the second coat to an orange peel finish. Any suggestions.

It should have been primed a little heavier. But another coat should do it. If not then three total should definately do it. Drywall mud tends to soak up differently than the drywall itself hence the difference in looks. But if you can, let it cure out a few days before painting again.

Yep, don't be stingy when priming over fresh mud. You can put a good coat of primer, and one coat of paint on, or you can put a light coat of primer, and 3 coats of paint on. In the end, it costs the same, but one takes much longer.

I primed my garage, did drywall point up using tinted drywall mud after illuminated the wall with halogen lights to detect the defects, primed again, then put 2 coats of semi-gloss enamel on. Looks nice.

What you need is a sealer/surfacer primer such as USG's First Coat:

Otherwise you get just what you described - the sheetrock and the mud will always take paint differently and that is only emphasized more with a semi-gloss or gloss paint.
