I iust tried some Kleenstrip,both semi paste and sprayable .
I apply then cover with a clear trash bag.
Im doing powdercoated aluminum wheels.
3 applications and its still not done.
Whats the best product for a DIY?

The EPA removed methylene chloride from paint strippers several years back so none are what they use to be. I have decent luck with citris strip or aircraft ultra paint stripper

note above that it is powdercoated.
I priced the Aircraft ultra at $38 a Qt! Wow.
Im sure its good but thats probably $200 in stripper to do 4 wheels.
I found some stripper on amazon that was $30 shipped for 2 gallons.
When this storm passes I will try it.

That aircraft stripper works pretty well. At least it used to.

I bought a gallon of Jasco stripper a couple years ago. Followed directions exactly. Barely touched to paint I was trying to strip off. 60 bucks down tge drain.

Strippers don't really work on powder coat, you're just throwing money away.

Strippers ain't what they used to be; Gypsy Rose Lee has not yet been replaced.

For ordinary paint stripping, look for methyl chloride at garage/moving sales and use it outdoors. The last gallon I bought was $1. Nothing works better. Moving sales are great for chemicals because they otherwise have to take it to hazardous material disposal sites.

For store bought stripper Citri Strip is about the best. It works slow and only removes one layer per application. Coat the object and then wrap it in plastic overnight to keep it from drying out. (rinse and repeat every 24 hours).

Can't comment on powder coating.

The powder coater I used had stripping tanks just for the purpose of removing powder coated parts...
You might be better off just turning it over to them for stripping...

I use commercial chemical or aircraft stripper if it's a well done job. If it's flaking and bare metal is showing, blasting usually takes it off.
P.S. Wheels pretty much **** to blast clean.

Dont you just love the internet.
That kleenstrip quart did 3 wheels previous to that.Granted it was only clear but it was powdercoating.

the problem with that was only about 1/3 of the qt was left so in a couple months,even tho it was capped
it must have weakened.
The spray on was about useless.

gotta love the internet to throw a wet blanket on the fire.
The Kleen strip spray on wasnt working...
I bought 2 gallons of this Sunnyside stuff for $33.
I sprayed about 3/4 of the first gallon with many applications and got to the base black powdercoat.
I then bought a nice rubber tub and poured the rest of container as well as the other 1 gallon and bingo
within minutes it was falling off.
I wish I would have done this sooner as I dont have enough to reach the lug nut holes.
Im going to let it soak overnight as maybe the vapors will loosen up whats in the lug nut recesses.
Local places quoted $80-90 a wheel to strip.

I think the key is total submersion vs just wetting the surface.
It was already bubbling off as I was pouring it over the wheel.
At $17 a gallon shipped via Amazon this stuff is cheap enough to warrant a large tubful as I did.
The 15 gallon tub cost more than the product but its a real nice heavy rubber that can be used for many things.

I didnt wait overnight
the vapors must have done the trick as its now clean.
I strained the tub full of goo with an old T shirt and put the liquid back in the can.
So its ready for the sanding and buffing.

Just in case anyone is wondering
This wheel was factory powdercoated silver.
As far as I can tell it had black, silver,black, final silver powdercoating.
Ive stripped all the coating off and will polish this just like the others that came polished.
First step is sanding.In this case I had some old 320 peel and stick for the DA so I hit the face
of wheel with that. Red compound bar cuts good enough to erase the 320 marks.
I will follow up with a final buff with white compound.
Ive tried the 150-3000 grit before polishing and directly to white compound and cant tell any difference
so Im saving a lot of sanding.

Back at it again.
The last bit of that Sunnyside stripper that I recovered was just used to do a spare wheel.
I didnt have enough to submerse so covered with plastic bag while in the rubber tub.
I sloshed it around hoping to cover it all.
After pressure washing it seems as tho it got all of it
So dont throw out the old stuff,its may still have some life left
