paint type for interior wall

I just got my garage interior drywalled. I am getting a primer for it, and originally planned on just leaving it primed but after doing some reading it seems that I would be better off putting a top coat on of a color other than white. Probably a light grey or something similar.

My question is regarding what kind of finish would be best? Satin, semi gloss. Definitely not a gloss, but it seems like the satin or semi gloss would clean up a lot better and the grey would look cleaner in the long run.

Satin or egg shell with two coats Use a top quality name brand latex. You likely will only paint it once in 20 years so do it right.

I have had good luck with the sherwin Williams semi gloss light French grey. Mostly cleans up fine and doesn’t show dirt too bad

I like matte... for durability in the garage I used BM Scuff-X (light grey) on the lower part of the walls. The remainder (upper walls and ceiling) is their ultra-spec low-sheen (white).

My local BM is good and I've used them for all my paint needs. They recommended the scuff-x for durability in a matte finish. I believe it was $45-55/gal (similar to Regal) vs. ultra-spec $90-100 for 5 gallons.

Have to use a good paint for the lower sheen for washability ....... Paint for a bathroom will have the durability and mildew protection ....some are a bit shinny

We use Windswept White, egg shell finish, in our rentals.

I painted my entire shop (OSB): primed with a stain blocking primer, then gathered all of my interior and exterior left-over paints, tossed the ones that were just too ugly (pinks, purples, etc), mixed the rest together and then added some white to approximate "Walla Walla Silt Loam". Turns out it was really close to "Stone Lion", the main exterior color of my house, so I just used that to finish when I ran about a gallon short. The upper 6' of the walls (14' side walls) and the ceiling are bright aluminum.

I think it turned out great: doesn't show dirt, it is scrubbable, not too dark, and it is durable.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to head to the paint store tomorrow. They were closed by the time I got off my **** today. I'll post up some pics of the whole garage before during and after.

I'll have to do the floor at some point, but it'll have to be after winter

Matte or eggshell hides imperfections a lot better and I hate glare...

I used interior latex in my garage as I heat it during the winter and don't park init.

The house garage is insulated but not heated, it gets a dripping wet or snow covered vehicle in it during the winter. I decided to use an exterior paint when I did it.

Go to your local paint store (Ben Moore, Sherwin Will, etc) and buy a good paint that they will suggest....... These guys know their products! Avoid the Big Box stores for buying paint but use them for supplies like rollers, tape and trays "IF" you have a need to shop there.

FLAT paint gets my vote for a garage because most "mud men" don’t do a great job and flat paint will hide the imperfections.

Another vote for grey semi-gloss latex, two coats over prime. Mine has held up very well. Get a good quality as you will only be doing it once no matter how long you own it.

So I spent all day Saturday painting. Man, I really don't like painting. I think it came out well though. Sherwin williams network grey. Satin finish.
1 coat of drywall primer and 2 coats of the color.

Super gloss white oil base for me. At my age I need all the light I can get. Gloss is easy to clean, slick and most importantly it reflects light.

Paint guys are finishing the 2nd top coat tomorrow of base white SW super paint. In satin finish on the walls. Used flat on the ceiling. Looks great so far!

Steely Gray for the bottom 4 feet and Gray Screen for top 8 feet. I’ve since painted trim and doors semi gloss Steely Gray. I plan to do a blue 3” horizontal stripe where colors meet.

As you can see you're going to get a bunch of different answers on this. It really comes down to preference.
Someone above had suggested asking a local paint store rep. I would have agreed with that 20 years ago but recently it seems like they've got alot of kids working there that dont know what their talking about.

Personally, I'd go with a Matte or sherwin williams washable flat. I'd use an interior latex paint. Exterior paint is not recommended and its not "better". Exterior paint should not be used inside as it has fungicides and uv protectant additives that are not safe to breath.

There are a few reasons why I would go with a matte or washable flat:
- Less glossy paints help hide imperfections in the drywall
- I personally dont like the shiny wall look
- If you use anything glossier than Matte, you will be able to see any touch ups. Since its a garage, i find that I often need to touch up spots where something hit the wall. if you touch up an eggshell finish, you'll see a difference between the new paint and old paint, unless you paint the whole wall up to the corners. Its not always terribly noticeable and not that big of a deal if you dont mind it.

oops. I haven't logged on it quite awhile. I went with sherwin Williams network grey satin finish. I thought it was going to be too dark at first but it's good. Shouldn't show dirt too easy.
