Painting Cabinets

I was thinking about buying a couple large cabinets from canadian tire, but the only thing is they have either a woodgrain or white melamine finish on them. Can they just be lightly sanded and repainted (red).Can I use regular acrylic enamel or do I need melamine paint??

When i was at Benjamine Moore last week, the manager told me about the new cabinet coat paint. It will replace oil paint very soon, i havent tried it yet, but its supposed to work wonders..And its LATEX!!!!! Heres the link.
