painting car lift

Folks,

What do you suggest to use for a paint? I have plain blue BendPak lift that was outside since october. Before moving it to garage I grind all underside (it's a scissor lift) and painted with POR15. So, that part is good but now I need to deal with top/visual parts.

What paint should I use for this type of equipment and where do I buy it?

Why not do POR15 on that part too? I can't think of anything better for handling abuse. You could even do another color. POR15 has no UV protection on it's own but that shouldn't matter since it won't be outside anyway.

Well. I kind of though about that but POR 15 does not come in blue color and I'd like to keep it blue. Plus, POR15 does not have gloss I want. It turned out more like "satin" when I painted underneath.

It's going to get scratched up anyway so why not use a glossy paint that is easy to touch up, cheap to buy and looks good? Try any of the enamel tractor/farm implement paints that are available (I happen to use Valspar) in a Ford blue color. If possible, use a hardener in the paint. You can brush, roller or spray it on and most of them run less than $50 a gallon. You can also get quarts in safety yellow, gloss white and gloss black for trim or accents.

I just restored deck on my John Deere 318 so I know exactly what you talking about.

What is the surface prep? I have factory blue paint that's faded and in parts peeled and rusted. Technically I can grind it all and make it nice but I don't want' to make flying mess in my new garage

Most likely I will use roller to apply paint.

royal is probably closer to the original but I like sail blue in a shop better. this is all sail blue Rustoleum

i agree with GH. I mix the Rustoleum with mineral spirits 66% paint 33% spirits and spray it through my HVLP gun.

I use Naptha to thin as it will evaporate quicker but I do clean up with mineral spirits. When thinned right, it comes out of my HVLP sprayer looking as nice as anything I have ever painted. Just don't look close (I'm not a painter......).

I painted my 4 post last summer, I used valspar tractor enamel, I got it at Farm and Fleet. I doubt you have those franchises down there, but anyway, Valspar tractor paint is sold all over. I bought it in gallons, its cheap. I put Rustoleum Rusty metal primer under it, its been sitting outside since last summer after I finished painting it (I'm moving it to a new shop and not ready for it yet), and is holding up fine (it was very rusty from cars dripping salt all over it, I primed over the rust). I think I used Ford Blue, its also available in rattle cans for easy touch up.

If the bolts and washers are galvanized or stainless, I don't paint them but don't bother masking them either. Note that the paint will not stick to galvanized surfaces very well unless you pickle it. If they are carbon steel, I always paint them.

I found Tremclad Dark Blue to be a very close match to the Bendpak factory blue. At $49.95 CDN per gallon it is a bargain. Very good coverage as well.

my bend pak been outside for about 12 years, i painted the arms on it yesterday with a can of enamel from lowes and a paint brush. found some paint in blue

Yes, wipe it off with solvent, purple scotch brite and brush it on. I did part of a hoist like that a while back and it turned out really nice, took about an hour or less a leg.

Would be nice, but he hasn't been online in over a year and a half. Kind of doubt he'll be back.

I was half-joking. I'm getting ready to do some touch-up of the exterior sheetmetal on a Winnebago View and I was reading through existing threads for tips when I saw the posts above mine and thought I'd toss one in there for fun.

I'm planning to use a 3-step KBS coatings system (like POR-15) and I need to scuff up what's left of the Winnebago factory paint. I'm considering using 'purple' 3M Scotch Brite pads instead of sandpaper. I was hoping to get some feedback from anyone who has used the 3M pads.

Maybe I should start another thread though...
