I have been working on this fire hydrant, yesterday I got the parts cleaned up, today I am powder coating, My question is; is there a good way to paint the chain that goes between the caps ?

I've had the displeasure of painting chain (one of my drunkun ideas I came up with, made a push bar out of chain) the method that seemed to work for me was lots of light coats to make sure everything got covered. But that was larger chain, smaller chain might benefit with lots of light coats but it could get tedious.

Dunk it in a can of paint, hang to dry, repeat for second coat but hang from opposite end to dry.

POR 15, just brush it on, hang dry. I tired dipping, made a mess, brushing was actually faster and por is self leveling so it looked like a factory applied finish when I was done..

Use a paint mitt. That is a mitten used like a brush to apply and wipe off the excess paint, this works for small (up to 3/8") chain in moderate lengths.

We use this powder coated steel chain for doing lock out/tags outs here at the plant. We get it from someplace like ORR Safety, but we buy it by the box. Your hydrant looks great by the way. What color are you going with?

Stainless steel, that's a idea. I already bought all new stainless hardware (nuts, bolts washers and some fancy acorn nuts) 117 dollars worth.

the original chain was painted red. I used red and yellow powder coat. I will post some pictures when complete and assembled......thanks

You can get both stainless and red powder coated chain from McMaster-Carr.

I like the stainless chain idea, personally. The red probably would not be a perfect match.
