I have a 30 year old cinder block shop, outside painted white and the inside is unpainted. The first phase of my garage fixup is to paint it white inside and white and red outside and add lighting. What is the best type if paint for this. Do I need to prime first?

Happy July 4th to all and remember the price that has been paid for our freedom.

I put a cinder block sealant/smoother pain I got at Lowe's on mine prior painting. If filled in the holes nicely and made the wall much smoother. It took alot of the stuff as it is thick and you want to be somewhat generous with it as it is a sealer.

Yep, you want to use a block filler type material for the first under coat. Then about anything will do but I'd go with latex.

Sherwin-Williams makes a product called Loxon which we have used with great success.
Really makes the finish coat go on good and cover better.

I have the same situation. I am currently stripping stuff hung off the walls and getting ready to clean 50 years of dirt off the walls.

Anyways Sherwin Williams had a sale this holiday week so I ended up getting the Loxon Masonry Primer that Red05GT is talking about. We shall see how it works out. The stuff is pretty expensive but given the amount a prep work I need to do I am not putting cheap primer on the wall. Whatever companies products you decide to use do yourself a favor and call their technical help line and make sure you are getting the right product for the job.

Yeah I am going to need to wash my walls before I seal and paint, lots of dirt dobber stains.
I am looking forward to restoring the shop. After paint and lights I want to tackle the rough concrete floor. I can't decide on what to put down, another layer of crete or some sort of smoothing finish.

We are using a Elastomeric paint made for masonry. You can get it at lowes. The best stuff says "elastomeric" and the cheaper grade says Stucco and masonry paint. The good stuff really is nice-and is a high build coating that forms a rubber-like sheet surface. Really tough. Covers very well, and can be tinted.

FYI
